  1. Depending on how long ago it was and what your idea of a fishing trip should be you might disappointed. Paydown is a beautiful area but the volume of recreational power boat traffic on weekends is horrendous.
  2. Yes the do matter very much. Bluegill are a perfect example, the behavior of junior males with inferior genetics jumping in a nest after the bull has be taken is well documented. Coppernose in Stockton? Wonder who thought that was a good idea?
  3. Looks like all the central Ozark rivers got a good bump the other day. Upper Niangua might drop a little faster than the others, flow will be strong, be careful.
  4. You LOZ guys should be commended. That's a lot of great advice for a new member and third times poster, not a bit of BS. One piece of advice that may not have been obvious; keep all your gear locked up at all times. The folks on this forum are generous but there are a lot of scoundrels who will steal your gear in a minute.
  5. I whole heartedly agree. It's not worth investing time and emotions into only to realize you've put your faith in fools, liars and theives. I'm going to focus my efforts on family and friends, and in finding Bluegill beds.
  6. Yep, I once made the mistake of launching at the ramp just up from lookout one time. Even when the weathers bad there are way too many fishermen up there.
  7. Not sure about temperature but in a couple days we'll have the first spawning moon. If the warm weather we're having now would hold its prime time. Unfortunately a cool down and rain are in the forecast.
  8. https://archive.org/details/Henry_Schoolcrafts_1818_Ozark_Journal I printed out a copy put it in a binder then read it while staying in a cabin on Buffalo River a few years back. I would recommend having a copy of the Missouri and Arkansas Gazetteer with you so you can track his path.
  9. It's a great read and you can get a free pdf online.
  10. Barring more heavy rain a couple of weeks from now would be a great time for a headwaters float. I would be careful taking inexperienced floaters. Strainers, log jams and blind corners can be dangerous.
  11. Jets and props both have limitations, as long as you understand how to prevent a jet from vacuuming up weeds and gravel I'd say it is the preferred choice. Our Shawnee is going strong at eighteen years old, we're contemplating an upgrade to a new boat with all the best features but something tells me I'll miss the old boat. I'm looking forward to see how you outfit your new boat.
  12. Bummer, I guess fish that only know how to live in a concrete trough don't have the sense to find their way back to the river.
  13. There is a book called Colossus, it's the story of the Hoover Dam. There were I lot of short sighted design flaws built into the original design. I highly recommend it. Fontenelle dam is Wyoming is another one that should scare the bejesus out of the folks downstream.
  14. The most popular pick up line in a Granite City bar, Hi, I like your tooth. The second most popular pick up line in a Granite City bar, Hey, your kind of cute, you got all your teeth. If you ask me how I know this I'll have to lie.
  15. Hatchery might be a loss but most of the fish are probably fine, they'll just be scattered up and down the river.
  16. I seen the levee at greens bottom in St Charles county being topped on the way to work this morning. Of course St Louis county won the race to build the highest levee on that part of the river. One thing I seldom hear any discussion about is how little we really know about weather patterns and how the data we have accumulated only represent a glimpse of what could actually happen. Next time the proverbial butterfly on the other side of the planet might flap its wings and the weather pattern we just had could last twice as long. It could also coincide with high water from snow runoff or a rain event far north of our part of the Missouri River. Thats the flood that will top the Levees in chesterfield and turn Blue Valley back into Gumbo Bottoms.
  17. Ha ha, I think your on to something, I'll take it a step further. Are there any societies in the world that expose their toes and thrive?
  18. I haven't checked gages or generation but in a flood they usually they hold water in Bull Shoals until the gage at Newport drops to a certain level, I think 21ft. After that you never know what they'll do.
  19. Your right about the "might have helped" but then it doesn't make any sense to create several permanent floods to prevent the occasional temporary flood. The only real solution to flood damage is to stay out of harms way.
  20. Events like this recent rain are all the justification needed for maintaining all the existing USGS gages. I think they should be expanded and up graded to the new flood reality.
  21. That is an incredible volume of water for a river that size. I suspect the fish survived the event better than the other residents.
  22. This is a big one. The only map I seen showing rain fall totals appeared to show the heaviest around the mountain grove. North Fork White got a big dose, flowing 130,000 cfs. Gasconade will be over hwy 44 at Hazelgreen shortly. It looks like the Niangua at windyville might be cresting, but you never know. Good luck stay safe.
  23. Last time that happened it worked out very well.
  24. Fishing water that's a little high is no big deal, fishing a river that is bank full is a drag and too risky. 1000 cfs on upper Current is about double what I would fish. One secret to fishing in these conditions is finding a lake that receives little or no runoff. It might sound improbable but they do exists.
  25. Thank you moguy, people who choose to live below impoundedments need to be aware of the potential consequences.
