Britt, Many of the states and private land owners who have done it have used wild birds to breed the chicks and then place them in the grow out pins on the site they will be released to avoid those very problems of inferior genetics and disease introductions. The pins are designed to protect those young chicks and give them the chance. I can name MANY some very close to you that the fence lines are cleared, Shawnee, Capps, Dorris Creek, heck even 4 Rivers. Almost any of them I have been too I can walk right up and touch the wire and post. You are mistaking clearing area for fence rows, fence rows are a key feature in in habitat and protection. The MDC lands combined with Forestry lands with a minimal effort could increase quail population across the state. It might seem like a small part of the state, but quail will spread from those areas and having areas like them producing with minimal aid from us not only could but would augment the population using wild birds as the source. Getting farmers in the game would be the key to major population rebound and I have heard numerous reasons why they will not and a big part of it is lack of trust in MDC to pure Distain for the MDC. I did not press as the reasons when talking to farmers as it was clear they were pissed and not really wanting to talk about it. You may know why but man I have had a warmer reaction trying to tell a woman NO to knew shoes.

When it comes to quail this is one creature the MDC could shine on, in bringing it back. It would not take much effort at all to get their populations way up as has been proven many times on private land and even in other states. It takes minimal effort in compare to other game restoration. 1. Buy grow out pins, there are many available now at low prices 2. Stop on all MDC land clearing to fences ( you need hedge rows ) do not clear or mow within 20 ft of fences. 3. Work with farmers to do the same in leaving hedge rows. 4. Predator control. It is that simple, and worked in other places. Quail are easily breed in captivity and can be done so in large numbers and have a high survival rate in the wild after release. Could be done with Pheasant and Prairie Chicken as well. But alas much like the gigging issue the Deer is king and that is where the money and efforts go.

I got it Quill, I was being sarcastic. Quail hunting is one of the very very few things I miss about California, busting super coveys (200 + ) birds was always fun. Granted average covey was 20 to 40 birds but I knew where when the first snow fell the coveys congregated and seeing an entire valley erupt with I kid you not a thousand birds from all three species was insane.

Ronnie; You are wasting your time! As much as I hate to say it you are, every angler is responsible to KNOW the fishing regulations and installing signage posting about the fish the laws the regulations etc is a complete waste of time when that is a requirement of the law. I am looking at my Life Time Mo Permit right now and this is what it says. “#1. Permittee’s signature attests to the acceptance of the rules pertaining to this permit.” Everyone should at time of license purchase should be issued a copy of the regulations or pick one up. Mine are mailed to me as a Lifetime permit holder. Others may argue it helps people that go to the streams and don’t know the rules. A judge will tell them “Ignorance of the law is no excuse as you agree to the terms of the laws upon purchasing and signing the license”. I would say go out enjoy the time outdoors and if you see illegal activity call the Poaching number, use your camera and take a picture or better yet video of the activity and turn it in! You will waste less time and be far more effective at protecting the resource by doing that than wasting time on signs that are largely ignored. We should all be willing to aid law enforcement in protection of the resource and when enough of us are making the call and aiding with evidence it will put a dent in poaching and illegal activity, but this takes men of strong will ready to say ENOUGH.

Trophy I look at it this way, it is going to be fun to watch! Yes we will loose this year but if in each loss we see the team become a team and do better each week even in the face of loss then it will prove Coach B and his mental game and we all know 90% of a Champion is the mental aspect. Bama doesn't win just on talent they when it on the mentality THEY WILL WIN. ATM Putt up ungodly numbers against Bama but the mentality of winning is why they won you could see it in them from the first second on The team didn't just believe they could win they KNEW the would win. Coach B seems to be trying to get our players to that mentality and only great coaches can do it. Win the minds win the game.

People are pissed at him for putting in a QB that sucks instead of taking the Redshirt of little brother. Personally I think Coach B has done pretty dam good at fixing a demoralized team getting them to buy in to his game and putting faith back in to the team, school and fans. I understand why he doesn't want to pull the redshirt off but man that loss stung. We have a proven winning coach and knows the game and really loves it, that is more then JLS or even BP IMO JLS just didn't care and BP was in it for the money and chicks. Coach B ive listened to and was at a meet and greet and you can tell HE LOVES THE GAME. This is the coach we need for that matter any team should need. He is going to loose this year and 6/6 would make me happy as can be but deep down 4 and 8 would still be an improvement after the destruction we went through last year. Give him this year and next Year I bet 7/5 8/4 no problem and the following year 9/3 10/2 well within reason. He is building a team and they need experience and sometimes failure/loss is the best learning tool around. Go through a season like last year and anyplace and no coach will fix it in one off season ever. People need to get a grip and learn to be thankful we actually have a real coach who loves the game and wants us to win and stand behind him. Now after 3 years he doesn't do anything then fire him but give the guy a chance to fix STUPID he might be able to.

Ban something because of people who break the law! Ya that's the thing to do it works so well where its been implemented in other subjects. Any large company,heck for that matter small company should have assets for protection. That is good business and business who does not have them and the contingency plan needs to fail.

History has shown one thing to always be a constant and true. If you over burden the people with Taxes the country will FAIL. This is the road we are on and have been since the creation of the Income tax and the entitlements programs. Prosperity of a nation only comes when its people are prosperous and the people are not prosperous but they are over taxed.

Brit, where that is true a great portion of that problem also comes form the season so many at one time being open 400 officers ( example ) during the off seasons could patrol better. 400 officers when almost all season are open are strapped then tack on search and rescue, storm / public safety duties court time etc we would need a force numbering in the thousands.

Brit, I doubt anything we can do will ever prevent illegal activities. Can we come up with a way to dent the problem? I have given it some thought and do not see a way to do it. You keep bringing up rod and reel anglers and I agree but even more they could be "snagging" the fish as well which really increases their ability to destroy the resource. We have far to few wardens in EVERY STATE. But in the Midwest DEER is King and that will be where the highest priority will be followed by Turkey and Waterfowl. Unless the poachers of all species get caught on video doing the act and reported it will not change no matter what regulations are implemented. Put a 15'' 2 fish regulation the law abiding person will obey it but then again they obey the rues now. Poachers wont care they don't now! Confrontation with them is very dangerous for a warden let alone a civilian. The only solution I can even see as being applicable would be the hiring of more Wardens but even then there are how many miles of water ways and they cant be on them all at all places all the time. The poachers also know and have used false reports to their advantage in the past and know a few anonymous calls send wardens to a different area leaving them free to do what they do. The other thing is they know where the wardens live and have used look-outs to see when they are home and when they leave. The only way to combat that is to bring in one from another area and now that takes away from his duties to that area. It is a frustrating situation all around.

Here try reading these. Also as you specified Beaver Lake, go through the BL Forum and you will see a pattern as to where and when. This is coming on my favorite time of year, I have my cast nets both stretching right now and getting ready for use. Within 3 weeks I will be spending mornings looking for Gizzard Shad and the rest of the day hunting stripers and large walleye with the bait. This is however the time to get out and start scouting locations, as the lake changes each year you want to locate the Gizzards now and then look just outside of where they are. I like to mark "driftlines" on my gps that will keep me away from trees and other break off points and snags so when the stripers do show up I know where I can maximize my ability to drift baits from surface to 15fow without worry of a snag.
