  1. It's a teeny tiny mayfly the color of a stalk of fresh celery. They hatch out of the giant beds of milfoil.
  2. There are several, but you can't really pin it down to the exact day/week. #18-22 Baetis (PED's) start popping off from the Dam up to the first handicap area around late May-early June on warm late afternoons, and that goes on until mid-Summer. Some days just a few scattered.....other days you can't open your mouth without eating them. I put up a really good pattern on this site for that a few years ago (9mm Wrench) that should come up on a search. They also emerge from the weed beds below the hatchery outlet in Z2, and the weedbeds in Z3. I called it "9mm Wrench" because that's what size the mayfly is. #22-26 Celery fly's start popping off in late June, from just above the guage house to the first bend past Holland dam, and that lasts until mid Summer.....then again, to a lesser degree, on mild winter days. Just a cream hackle and tail tied with lt.olive thread on a #22 hook will get rises, as will a tiny pinch of blond deer hair over a pale olive body (EHC style). Hottest part of the Summer.....Ants & Beetles rule. Plop it down, let it drift 3-4 feet.....and if you don't get bit, pick it up and plop it down somewhere else. Late August- early September you can add Hoppers under the overhanging trees at the High bank hole. Fish them the same way as the beetles/ants. Late Fall/Winter after all the leaves are all gone......#22-26 with a thin white thread body and a tiny tuft of CDC will get rises from the midging fish in the slow/slick areas from the spring down to the whistle bridge. There's a couple more, but I've reached my typing quota for the day. 😅 You're unlikely to see a giant blanket hatch that encompasses the ENTIRE stream at once. That just doesn't happen. There aren't squirrels in EVERY tree, ya know.
  3. Oh I know! But whenever they are pushed to make a statement on LO water levels..... that's what they say. The old hands, when UE controlled this lake, did a FINE JOB ! But anytime a new generation of engineers/biologists/ ect. take over a project, they just HAVE TO drastically change things (make their mark) and ignore the fact that a level of perfection was already reached. 🙄 They can say whatever they want, but the REAL REASON for the drastic winter drawdowns is to keep the milfoil in check...... because bouji homeowners don't like it, and property values are effected by it. 🙄
  4. It's a "trout park technique" for recent stockers. The outlandish colors are attention grabbers. Swing it, twitch it, strip it, or just let it hang in the current.....the biggest ding-a-ling in the pool will usually take a swipe at it. 😅 If you were fishing with ME, I would urge you to use your trout park time to hone your real-world skills.... instead of trying to bring 50-100 fish to hand. 🙂
  5. To me it is definitely a spring branch, as is Montauk and Meramec. I've seen and participated in many significant aquatic insect hatches at Bennett and on the upper Current. Typically the closer to the spring the smaller the bug, and it's always been in the late-afternoon/evening......whereas further down river the hatches come a few hours earlier in the day, and then the larger bugs (Drake's, Dobsonflys, stoneflys, ect.) in the middle of the night. I bet you've witnessed large hatches on spring creeks, you just have a preconceived notion that the bugs are sizable.....but they are often teeny-tiny (midges), #22-24 celery fly's, Trico's, or the almost always present little black Caddis. Clouds of midges are an everyday occurrence at Bennett and Montauk, even during the coldest days of winter. Leave your truck window cracked open and when you get ready to leave you'll have plenty of passengers. 😁
  6. I've "read" alot of stuff. Almost all of it is undependable and/or area specific. What holds true on the Henry's Fork or the Madison is useless info for the fish in Bennett Spring or the NFOW.
  7. How many times have I heard them say......"We don't alter LO discharges based upon what Truman is doing"?
  8. With everything in the region low, power demands at a minimum, and no significant precip in the forecast.......WHY are they drawing the lake down already? Surely they have a reason, I would just love to know what it is. 🤔 Could it be to energize all those cars that won't run on dinosaur juice?
  9. You're targeting trout in moving water. Cold fronts aren't a factor, so have another excuse in mind. 😁
  10. Right? A jury full of people that believe angels are real, really shouldn't have to deliberate long to conclude the potential for innocence.
  11. I think it's best not to blind yourself with science regarding the Fall turnover. If our lakes had the topography of a cereal bowl then you might be able to make sense of it. But they don't.....and you can't. Stay in areas where the max depth is 15' or less and look for life in that zone.
  12. What is the incentive to carry insurance anyway? When the twister ravaged my neighborhood the ones without sufficient insurance came out better than those of us that were fully covered. Kind of a kick in the nuts, it was. 🤔
  13. So cool ! 👍 I got permission to hunt a really good woodlot 2 years ago that was loaded with Gray's, and during my first scouting trip I came across some game cameras. I asked the owner about them and he asked me to investigate them. Turned out that they belonged to MDC, and only one was looking outside his property up a power line clearing. The landowner went ballistic. I haven't been back since..... but I really want to go.
  14. "Lead weights wrapped in fillets is a killer catfish technique. You never heard of it? Walleye eating them explains why the line sometimes breaks upon the hookset. I'll be dammed 🤔 " Maybe if the dude hadn't stood there looking like Biden trying to find his way off the podium ...... he'd still be deemed the champion.
  15. Whether they believed it or not is irrelevant. Nobody could have proven otherwise. And I think average Trump supporters are way smarter than you might be giving them credit for.
  16. The BBB is an open/amateur event, and everyone needs to recognize that. Not only are they amateur bass fishermen......they are mostly amateur boat operators too. If you enter into that sh!tshow expecting to witness professionalism and ethics, you are going to be terribly disappointed.
  17. That's where his ability to be SMART went all to hell. Had he just smiled and congratulated the tournament director for catching it, he could have said that he did it just to test the integrity of the weigh-in process. Could have stated that he was going to come clean after he had check in hand.....just to prove a point. In the end everyone would have thanked him and given him multiple high-fives. 👏
  18. What is it about this particular incident that has made it go so viral ? There have been multiple others, far more interesting and clever, that never even made the news. My favorite was the one where the guy had individual fish in a Rubbermaid tote with a flap cut into the top to pitch a heavy jig into. When it came down to the specifics of the rules his actions were no worse than planting some brushpiles. His amateur partner didn't even pick up on it. 🤷
  19. In a tournament where most of the fish are dead anyway, and aren't required to be released unharmed......is it truly a sin? I've never participated in a walleye derby, but do the rules specifically state that nothing can be done to enhance the weight of a fish? And are they allowed to cull a dead fish? If so then wanton waste should be deemed an equal sin. If I were to think about it for a minute I bet I could point out a number of things about tournament fishing that are ungodly.
  20. .......on a flyrod 👍
  21. It's amazing how quickly the tournament director, and all of those ol'boys in the crowd, just suddenly forgot they were Christians...... isn't it ? 😅 See what I mean? In times like that aren't they supposed to consider "What would Jesus do?"
  22. The bridge I wanna see replaced is that skinny little POS on 64 just outside of Lebanon. I've almost clicked mirrors with people on that thing multiple times. I'm surprised there isn't an accident there every day.
  23. Because they paid a stupid amount to have it replaced a couple years ago, and the very first flood shifted it. They want the contractor to come back and fix it.....but the contractor is saying "NO, we built it exactly they way that you insisted, and we're not coming back and fixing/replacing it for free everytime a tree branch bumps it". The engineer suggested that they alter the location of the bridge to a less necked down area of the stream and elevate it some, but noooooo......it had to stay RIGHT THERE.
  24. Until you partially disassemble the outboard then you'll never know. Will the lower unit come off? If not then it's only good until the water pump needs replaced. Will the lower unit bearing carrier come out? If not then the motor is only good until the propshaft seal fails. Will the flywheel come off? If not then it's only good until a stator or timer base/trigger needs replaced. Can you remove the thermostat housing? ....... I think you get the idea now 🙂 Mercury, Suzuki and Yamaha only expect them to last 5-7 years in saltwater, so know THAT.
