  1. OMG. Will the controversy over the Ned rig ever end? If I had a bait and technique that was truly outstanding for me, yet hardly anyone else wanted to fish it..... I would be absolutely elated. The Ned fishing gurus just get completely torqued if someone snorts at its alleged effectiveness. They just can't stand it. They DEMAND equal respect for the Ned. Bashing a Ned thread is grounds for an asswhoopin !
  2. One thing to keep in mind is that the "cheap" gear of today is still better than than the primo gear of the past. And guys didn't just start catching good bags of fish yesterday, they've been doing it since way before the bicentennial (no graphite, cheesy sonar, rough-grindy-heavy reels, and line that wasn't worth a crap). Fish still were caught....Lots of them, and guys enjoyed doing it. We are spoiled brats.
  3. One year the crappie positioned on No-Wake bouy cables, suspended 7-12 ft. and we tore 'em up for almost a full month just running around fishing bouys out in the middle of coves. We really thought we were onto something, but I've never found them like that since in the numbers that they were that one year. Fish are crazy ! And trying to figure them out will drive YOU crazy too.
  4. Thankfully we have you to always point out the genuine facts and keep us all reeled in.
  5. Oh I challenge you to appear more cynical than I. I wrote the book on it.
  6. Well yeah. Unless you've got some slave labor action going on you're not gonna be doing it for long selling spinnerbaits at 3.50 a pop. Too many steps involved. Your cheap competitors will be short lived.
  7. Allow me to show you how easy this is..... Give me a topic of concern, just make something up, and I'll convince you that I care deeply about it and am working hard on the best solution.
  8. I wouldn't bother making them unless I could sell them for 7-8.00+
  9. I don't ever remember a day that 12" was considered 'just good keeping size'. A 12" crappie is a genuine Slab and has been as long as I can remember. After 11" though they really just get big heads and tails. Not much more meat on a 12+.
  10. It was a guess. You're reading too fast.
  11. This is really gonna piss Chief off, but I was here pre '89 (Stoner wasn't BTW) and I sure dont remember having any trouble catching good sized crappie. I'd have to say it was about the same as it is today, if not oftentimes better. 50-60% of adult crappie were harvested annually? Really? How the heck could they even know that? I'd guess closer to 5% since for the most part nobody seriously crappie fished except for March thru May back then, and maybe a tiny TINY bit during Oct-Nov. Hard core year 'round crappie fishing didn't really take off until the late '90s as I recall.
  12. I have time to do it but I'm not doing it for free. Send me a down payment equal to 1/2 his weekly wage (benefits included) and I'll arrange it. Seriously though, if he had anything more important to do wouldn't he be doing it, and composing articles about that ?
  13. I think he's just trying to appear busy, justifying his job.....which is fine. This is how things get screwed up, though I doubt changing a crappie reg would hurt or change anything noticeably.
  14. If they change the length limit here I assume they will do the same on Truman ? Whatever. Seems a better change would be to adjust the limit from 15 to 10. Enough bags of freezer burned crappie get tossed or fed to the cats already. Everyone stockpiles more than they can truly eat and possession limits are grossly ignored.
  15. That top one looks real good !
  16. I'm surprised that none of those are fat headed water-pushers. Everywhere I have ever fished streamers for bass, big-headed muddler style flys have outfished the slender streamers designed more for swinging across current. Here are some of my favs...
  17. I don't keep them under 10" mainly because a 9" isn't worth filleting to me, but I'm not in favor of them changing the min.length limit. There's already too many crappie already, no sense in regulating for more. Let the folks that want to keep the little ones continue to do so. If they are in the mood for regulation changes I can think of several that would be way more beneficial to the LO fishery than the min.crappie length.
  18. I throw them on the same 7' med-hvy rig w/20# flouro that I pitch heavy jigs with. Can't say that I enjoy it much but it's effective. I've yet to hook a double on one.
  19. What spincast reels are you using ? There are only 2 in the whole world that are worth a crap and one of them is direct drive (doesn't even have a drag system).
  20. I get a little disappointed when I land a Kentucky. Not sure why, but I'll prolly never shake it.
  21. Whaaa ??? I hope dementia isn't setting in.
  22. I was headed down to the river at Barclay one Winter morning, the hill was icey and a bit treacherous. As I was easing down through the 'S' bend here comes an old truck hauling butt up through it, no way he could slow down or he'd never make it. I bit the ditch to give him room and as he passed within inches I noticed a very wet and cold looking ONESHOT behind the wheel. I later learned that he'd fallen in the river and was haulin'butt for the house. Sorry for cussin' ya ol'boy....but that was a close one!
  23. It ain't new. The windshield wipers are losing paint.
  24. Now now, I'm sure he was gonna drive it back. Maybe he got sent for tampons.....give the poor guy a break! Nah, I'm still anti-Monsanto, and all in favor of affordable free range beef.
  25. OMG, Toads in the basement. That takes me back. Ours were fat on camel crickets, which for some weird reason I was afraid of as a small child.
