I recognize that beard.... Uploaded with ImageShack.us Can't wait to hear that story.... I wouldn't wanna piss Barry off. -
Yeah, from what I hear the catfishermen are catching more of them by drifting shad than the guys that are targeting them specifically. I'm not even gonna try until we start getting those first cool rains of early Fall.

Good lesson. Be prepared for that big piece of wood at or about mid-canoe/position 5 though Seems like there's always something there that wants to send you crashing thru the rest of the stretch like a pinball. I love to watch a truly skilled paddler handle a tricky spot. Occasionally I get into a bad groove where things are just happening too fast and the wrong stroke will get me into trouble. When I see that about to happen I scoot off the seat, knees on the hull and use my paddle at chest level to fight off the stuff I dont want to crash into, and leaning into the objects I can't fight off. I know that's not proper, could be dangerous and probably looks hillarious...but it has kept me from dumping quite a few times. Any tips on the best desperation move....when things start to go bad and you can't think quick enough? Because there are lots of spots where ferrying away from one widowmaker can cause you to broadside another one. Good thread!

Are you guys hearing any white/hybrid news up that way? I'm gearing up to attack the area around the buffalo's this Fall.
-
And THAT is what "rivers are for"...... moving $#!t far downstream.
-
There is that, one can only hope. I need to learn more about zebra mussels and their life cycle...because it appears to me that they aren't near as thick in this part of the lake this year. Last year they were on everything that came into my shop and every dock cable and swim ladder had mussels attached to them.......This year, not so much.
-
This lake back-waters more than it flows through. Go far enough upstream on the Glaize arm until you have noticable downstream water movement and you'll find purer water. The mass of the contamination is NOT coming from the tributarys. And where did you hear that the samples were fine now? If asked to I could produce a passable quality sample from any given area of the lake...... .I could also stir up the bottom a bit and produce one that most likely would be off the charts. As for the other corps lakes .... they are only testing in the public beach areas where there IS development and human impact. THIS LAKE HAS HUMAN IMPACT THROUGHOUT ITS ENTIRETY. So do the math.

Sandy Texas soil prolly filters alot better than broken bedrock.

I could appreciate it if it was truly being done as implied, and if steps taken to rectify it would be effective. The lake is lined with homes and businesses and medicine cabinets loaded with anti-depressants, hormone balancers, vitamins and narcotics. And each one has a septic system no further than 30 yards from the shoreline. Add lawn and home care chemicals to the mix as well (herbicides, pesticides and fertiilizer). I'm no scientist but I am willing to bet that the main source is oozing right out from under those concrete seawalls....But e en if it is, waddaya gonna do about it? Nothing, that's what. Because a choice was made back in the 1930's to boost the area economy by allowing a living breathing community to thrive along the banks.... and pollution of one form or another is unavoidable. Nothing short of buying everyone off...or somehow forcing them to leave, is going to noticably improve the water quality here. As time goes on the water color just gets more and more stained with suspended particles of.... whatever. Anyone that spent time here back when there were still places where you could pull up on the bank and have a shore lunch will certainly attest to the natural beauty and clean water that has been forsaken, and to sit here and try to blame some chicken farm in Kansas is just rediculis. Equally rediculis is to pretend, like Jack, that the water quality is just fine because the fishing is still good. The best that anyone can hope for is that it will not get TOO MUCH worse. Wrench out.

IMO the only legitamate testing being done are the ones being done on the water at the public beaches....cuz they gotta COVER THEIR ASSES. Last year they said the water quality at the beaches was bad because of excessive runoff and goose poop. Well they got the geese under control, and its been a long time since we had a good rain...... yet PB2 beach has been closed dang near all year I think., hasn't it? The Gov said he wouldn't rest until water quality had noticably improved here, and that there would be ZERO TOLERANCE of systems not in compliance, ..... Every case I am aware of has been, or will be thrown out of court. So I guess I took the word ZERO out of context when that statement was made. Nobody can clean this lake up, it is what it is.... I just have ZERO TOLERANCE for the brainwashing BS associated with it. The lake is foul. (by many folks standards) but it still has a purpose (by many folks standards) and can still be enjoyed ( by some folks).

FROM THE LINK.... This study is a five-year cooperative effort led by the DNR and LOWA, which provided trained volunteers to collect water samples. Each year approximately 15 coves are sampled monthly. The intent is to sample from Bagnell Dam to Truman Dam over the five-year period. The volunteers collect samples monthly from May through October each year. Samples are analyzed by the DNR laboratory, where they are tested using methods approved by the EPA. All samples are analyzed for E. coli. Costs for the water testing run about $15,000 annually. "Trained Volunteers", .... trained how, WHEN and WHERE to get the samples. "Samples tested using methods approved by EPA", .... How many METHODS are there, and which ones are not APPROVED? "All samples are tested for e-coli ", ..... ONLY ! "Cost for the water testing run 15,000.00 annually", .... Thank Dog for VOLUNTEERS hu?

OSB, it "persists" anywhere... when the source is non stop.

Now there's a better example of someone who could be a respected guide and tournament fisherman. Rob wasn't force fed that info, he likely researched it himself because he truly cares.

Woah Fishinwrench? Hu? Do you mean "Woah Fishinwrench, please don't say that out loud"?.....or do you mean "Woah Fishinwrench, you are wrong" ? Jackie boy, fish are among the last critter to suffer from ecoli and pharmacuetically polluted water. Where are the frogs ? Where are the dragonflys and damselflys ? Your position of: the fishing is ok so the water quality must be fine... could use some education. And Im not sure that I consider you worth the time and effort to educate. People that truly think like you do are the reason why it will only continue to get worse. If you truly CARE about, and LOVE this lake and the environment you should take initiative to open your eyes and look a little closer. Just because YOU can't catch a decent mess of fish outside of your own back yard doesn't mean diddly about the water quality anywhere. Did you really tell me to" have fun playing on the computer" ? Really, Hotshot tourney winner ? Wanna put your money where your mouth is? Cuz you didn't get mine that Tuesday evening....or anyone elses the following week. Have you even drawn a check since? Catching a decent limit in 3 hrs. around PB2 the Tuesday after a Sunday C&R event really isn't much to brag about, dude.
-
Put all that together at the same time and you're on'em. Hint: you'll only be pitchin to 1 or 2 docks in each cove/creek arm....then running to the back of the next creek/cove to find the dock that is close to the channel of the back end flat. 10" worms and keep them moving.

That's better advise than than it was given credit for. I've had several of those..... They are about as dependable as the average air mattress. I'll give it 'til Christmas time, maybe a week or so afterwards. Any takers?

"Hidden Valley".....LMAO. Boy, I hope they didn't spend too much time coming up with that name. Talk about being buried on google, is there not at least 14 Hidden Valley's in every county in the USA? I'm surprised that the area has missed out on that after all these years. LOL Oh and Mike, get some dang 4x Rio FFP in there would ya? -
Reservoir tribs are your best bet, you can get into them pretty good after a good gullywasher. They'll run up the creeks as soon as it begins to fall out, and will stay as long as the water remains off colored. If you are going after them with flys its hard to beat a strip of rabbit fur (white or pink) Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Only when it has to do with fishing .... I still can't operate my microwave, DVD player or landline phone the way I'm supposed to. I have selective ADD. -

The Google maps app for android does it all for me nowadays, you can switch from map to satallite, shows both road and river milage....and if you load the area image before you drop off into the hollers and loose signal you can keep it in the background and pull it up when you need it...it remains functional even without service. Pretty darn cool! -
No I haven't, I've never been out West....you got me there. What is the average river temp in that part of the country during the Summer?
-
It's Summer for $#!T sake. Wet Wade!

Being basically a native of LO I agree with your pluses & minuses. I'd say that you are close to "spot-on". And apparently the pluses outweigh the minuses for the majority of people....since the population is still agrowin' round heya Kinda reminds me of a camping trip I was on recently, we picked a nice secluded spot during the week in a very large campground and was enjoying the solitude. Then come Friday afternoon folks began filtering in and even though there was plenty of room, and areas with even better river access than we had, they chose to pitch their camp within 25 feet.of ours. It's almost like dumping a calf at the far end of a field that has a few other cows in it....the calf feels safer when in the direct company of others I guess. It seems that people who seek solitude are usually imposed upon by those that are afraid of it. And so it goes for Lake of the Ozarks...Moooooo!

OTF, They are the same people that package the food you eat, sell you insurance, teach your kids in classrooms, and help hold down the pews at your church most Sundays..... If you can't share a river with them, then who? LOL
