Hydraulic steering
fishinwrench replied to Basfis's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
You'll get it. It isn't a difficult project by any means, just getting the end of the rod past the scraper without taking a little sliver off of it can be a pain. If they really loved you, and understood, they'd give you 10 scrapers per kit. But Noooooo, if you trash a scraper you gotta find and retrieve that sliver (or else it will eat the O-ring)...then buy a whole new seal kit. -

Good Job ! You may have hit the lottery. Sadly my success rate is 1/10 of yours. -

No they are a carbon fiber material. Uneffected by heat, pressure, and every chemical known to man. Their kryptonite is the edge of the cylinder ram -

The cap "seals" job is merely to keep air and water out. The O-rings seated inside the end caps are what keep the system pressurized. The scraper (behind the seal) protects the O-rings. -

What you have on the end caps is 2 O-rings, a scraper, and a vacuum seal (lip facing outward). The scraper acts as both a scraper to keep bits of grit from getting to the outer o-ring, and a shim for the vacuum seal. It is the same way that tilt/trim cylinders are constructed, but the difference is that tilt/trim rams are installed through the caps from the opposite direction during assembly, so the scraper can spread out of the way. Where you run into trouble resealing steering rams is the edge of the ram has to be forced past the scraper...and only one in ten times will you get lucky and have it clear the scraper without chipping off a microscopic piece of it. Without the scraper doing it's job 100% the O-rings are gonna be short lived. This is why so many develop leaks, the factory that makes them can't do it consistently....and neither can I. Steering is big-time important business, it's not to be tinkered with unless you know for certain that it all goes together like it needs to. For pretty much the cost of parts&labor for me to reseal it until I'm 100% satisfied that I got lucky and the scraper didn't get a bite taken out of it, you can almost buy a new ram.....so when a leaky one comes in here I replace the whole ram assembly, it's the only option I'll offer. They are a poorly designed hydraulic POS to begin with, and I'd rather the folks that manufacture them be responsible instead of ME. -
I've heard that all of the truly good barrels are made in Germany. Either something about their steel, or the way they cut rifling. Some (maybe all?) airgun barrels are choked to a small degree. Some are choked only on the lands, and others choked both on the lands and the grooves. This explains why identical rifles will prefer different pellets, and why sometimes you get a rifle that is either truly special.....or a genuine POS that won't shoot anything very good. No 2 barrels are exactly alike, but apparently the Germans get it closer than anyone else can.

Thanks man. We can sure enough do it.

Ok so he got uptight because meat eating hacker fishermen can potentially locate fishing hotspots....and y'all didn't take him seriously and promptly delete all your trip report pics ? And him "leaving forever" is gonna somehow right this wrong? Is he really gone for good, or is he just gonna continue reading everything daily....but just never post again ? Cuz I mean...ya know he has been on here 7-8 times since he said g'bye. No doubt in my mind, I have hacker capabilities that show he has clicked on here 8.....whoops, now 9 times since he threw his little fit. C'mon Trout junkie dude, don't be such a tender douchenozzle. Please come back and show me how to hack photos. My wife sent me a pic of her boobs once and I'd love to prove that she took that pic while at a lesbian bar in Columbia.

Not even close. Those are 2 different creeks BTW. In different counties.

Nope, I picked those specific pics because I know for a fact that I had mapping/tracking programs running at the time they were taken, and I haven't changed any setting whatsoever since then. The top pic is even shared on Google Earth through Viewranger.

There are really people on here doing cryptic cyber analysis on photos to see if they can pinpoint the GPS coordinates of where the fish was caught? BS! Prove it. Show me on a map where these pics were taken. I promise I haven't altered anything (don't even know how to).

It's none of my business, but I'm curious..... What is it that bothers some of y'all about the Meramec boys ? As I see it they are some of the easiest going, and most laid back group of guys on here. Always among the first to offer up information or assistance, and extending invitations to come hang out with them. Somebody please spell it out for me, draw pictures if that's what it takes because I am totally in the dark here and if there's a reason to be pissy about them then byGod I wanna know so that I can fart in their general direction all the time too.

What kinda bird is it that builds the little mud cocoons under bridges ?

There must have been some content deleted from this thread, cuz none of it makes sense. What did y'all do to upset Trout Addict so badly ? And why is Jesus in the middle of it ?

I'm still experimenting with different pellets and seeing what I am capable of doing with it. If some starlings show up I'll probably pick them off. I can only spare maybe 2 grays here around my place and I've had a dozen opportunities to pop their little heads, but I'm not that hungry and they ain't bothering nobody. They can live in peace here, I like having a few around. What really sounds like fun to me is rigging up a scabbard for my mountain bike and cruising the trails for some bigger red squirrels.

I never get into anything half-assed I definitely see a .25 break-barrel in my future, I'm attracted to the ballistics. I tried to get the 23gr. pellets to shoot in the .22 but it's no good past 30yds., it just runs out of steam. Of all the .25's I've looked into, the one you got is my favorite, so I definitely wanna know how it works out for ya. One of the reviews made a big deal about using the artillery hold with it, and I hope that's not truly important because I'll never be able to train myself to hold a gun like an injured baby bird, or a pregnant hamster. Some of those guys, although they are incredible shots, have crossed over the line into insanity. I have tried to get interested in PCP's but there are a 1/2 dozen things that I don't like about them. Looks, feel, and cost to operate being the main hangups. Really REALLY like the nitro piston break-barrel guns.
-
To each his own, but I wouldn't go with a heavier pellet (the 31gr. is PCP fodder). You really don't want to be below 671fps or your trajectory is gonna be like a "rainbow". Misjudge the range by 4 yards and you'll likely miss. Right now you're fatter on energy than you are on flat trajectory. I'd stay with the 25gr. knowing you've got plenty of smoke out to 50yds. for fox/coyote sized critters, and a trajectory curve that is awesome out to 55-60yds.

Assuming a scope height of 2", and the JSB Exact King pellet, this should be your numbers. Better with a 40 yard zero
-
That is impressive! What weight pellet is that?

Having spent some time on that pond I'd hate to be tossed into it. There's really no "getting to the bank", you'd have to slog your way through a mile or more of marsh and muck before you found something solid to climb up on to. Gators and cottonmouths everywhere. It's no place to go swimming, ever. -

Did they never find the guy? I haven't heard anything further. He had a PFD on, and it was too cool for gators. Inflatable PFD I'm guessing. If they don't find him this should be the end of those! The last time he was seen he was alive in the water, right? -

Oh don't dare go there ! I practically got banned from the Marine Dealers Assoc. meetings for making a strong case that "boater education" tests needed to be given before renting boats to tourists. No more free Hawaiian Punch, sausage and crackers, or pats on the back for ol' Glen after that. -

My thinking is that IF he had been in a 18' boat with a 150 he would've looked out across that sea and elected to fish the canal that was closest. He may not have gotten a check but he'd be alot better off right now. When you're in a 21' Ranger with a 250....Shiiiiiiit, you're goin' for it. -

No training required.....just lots of insurance.
