American Racoon Fur for Tying Flies
kjackson replied to Knot Sure's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
The only real downside I see is that it's possible to avoid a trip or two to your local fly shop. I've had good luck using the underfur for dubbing. The guard hair from the hide I have is a bit too short to work on larger jigs and flies, but I have a tail 'curing' in the freezer right now that is destined to be used for jigs... -
Walley Fly or Fly Jig - Need a Recipe
kjackson replied to mic's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
I think I need an intervention. I was at a doctor's appointment this morning, and right across the street from the hospital was Everharts... so I couldn't help myself. I ended up with a 100-pack of #12 swivels, a 100-pack of #1 Colorado blades and two packs of very small split rings. They are still out of the #10 swivels I was after, but I noticed a bunch of #0 blades in Colorado and willow shapes. And I've not started on the gold-finish blades yet. How many of these twinkle-butt Clousers can a person use? -
Walley Fly or Fly Jig - Need a Recipe
kjackson replied to mic's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
I'm always a sucker for the need to buy more stuff (which is why I have to sell more of it), so I stopped by Everhart's in Clinton two days ago. They have most of what is needed for Wrench's fly and for far less than Jann's or online. I almost bought a bag of #12 swivels for four or five bucks--and there was at least 100 swivels in it. Same with blades--really good prices. The only problem is that they were out of the swivel size I was after and the blades. Sigh. That's why I priced Jann's. After that sticker shock, I went to one of my fave online stores-- Angler's Workshop and found better prices. I"m going to hit Everhart's tomorrow as my Hobby Lobby fix today didn't quell the desire to buy stuff. Sigh. -
Question on lips...for flies, obviously
kjackson replied to kjackson's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
What started me on this idea was an image of a bunch of really slick crease flies tied with a lip. And that led to the flypala series. I like the idea of the seashell sequins as there probably wouldn't be a need for a lot of fiddling with the lip. -
Given that my wife and I are still recovering from whatever virus is floating around, I'm pretty much bored and trying to think of something...and one of those things is advancing my tying skills and patterns. Yeah, I should be working on a very long list of household, garden and yard tasks, but those things take up nap time. One of the tying things I'm contemplating is incorporating some kind of lip in diving flies. One thing I've run across is the use of seashell sequins. Another suggestion was to modify fake fingernails. I realize that there are Fly Lipps available, but part of the fun of tying, for me anyway, is to find better or at least different ways of doing things. Soooo-- has anyone used the seashell sequins or fake fingernails to make a usable lip to provide extra motion? Any other suggestions?

Looking for old school Air Cell flyline
kjackson replied to fishinwrench's topic in Buy - Sell - Trade
And he says that while the core is not Dacron, it will allow you to slip the covering off the core, so you should be good to go. -

The Panfish version is orange, but I don't know about the core yet. I see some of the SA lines have a "multi-filament" core. -
Looking for old school Air Cell flyline
kjackson replied to fishinwrench's topic in Buy - Sell - Trade
I've got a friend who works for SA--yeah, a dream job as he recently returned from visiting Australia and Tasmania on company business and you should see the pix- and asked what his suggestion might be. I was pretty specific about your request, and here is his suggestion: https://www.scientificanglers.com/product/aircel-panfish/ -

I've got nothing that will work. The few orange lines I have are too modern, and they are spey lines as well. Sorry. -

I have an older Air Cell line that I think is double tapered. It's light green though. I'll check what else is in my stash. -

Outboard question
kjackson replied to kjackson's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
OK, that sounds good. I haven't seen the plate on the boat, but the owner said it has a 40hp limitation. The 30 sounds like a winner as I'm happy with the 80% rule. I am waiting for his response about whether he's checked into why the 25 died and would not restart. As he put the boat on the trailer up on one of the side rails, I was reluctant to get into it to look at things. I was amazed at how clean and shiny it was under the cowling when I popped it open. I looked a little bit for an inline fuse, but most of the wiring was buried in a side locker. -
Outboard question
kjackson replied to kjackson's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
That would be great...except the site says it's no longer available. There probably are some out there or something similar. The guy still has to have the "can't get it started after it died" problem fixed first, though. The boat itself is a 16, vee-hull Lowe/Sea Nymph that would work well, not as big as I would want if I had better parking options at our place in town, but it would work, and it's small enough I can manhandle it around to get it in the driveway. And the condition of the boat and outboard look like it's never been used. I don't think I've seen a cleaner used motor. -
Outboard question
kjackson replied to kjackson's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
Welp, to drag up this issue again, I just looked at a really clean, almost virginal Lowe boat that has a Johnson 25 on it. There are only two problems: the motor died on the guy the last time he had it out and it lacks trim and tilt. I feel I need T&T for some of the flats-type fishing I do. I imagine the motor has the ability to run on that setting that is halfway up-- but still, T&T would be desirable. While I might opt for replacing the motor, assuming I or Wrench could find a good 25-40 Johnsonrude, this motor looks like it came out of the showroom (as does the boat). Assuming the guy can get the motor running again--he's checking with his buddy about it-- are we talking $1K to put on a trim unit? -
Teal have to be the best-tasting ducks out there.

Wrench...Opinion
kjackson replied to aarchdale@coresleep.com's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
Love the boat. Here's a quick follow-up on outboards-- I'm looking at a couple of boats with two-stroke Yamahas. How are they for parts availability? -
WOW! What a buck! Congratulations!

It is very good. Many thanks for looking up the link. I substituted a stout beer, and it changed the color a bit, but the crumb and crust were both good. The process I used puts the stretched bread in the refrigerator over night, which is kind of a pain, but it makes for a good loaf.

The latest version using beer and vinegar and starting it in a cold oven looks okay...haven't given it the taste test yet.

Well, we could transfer to someone heading your way...

No-See-Un Fly -- New (to me) Small Mayfly Dry
kjackson replied to mic's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
I tied something like that way back in the day. but instead of a hackle wing, I tied in a small, blobby piece of white foam as a short wing. The first time I tried it was on the Spokane River below my house. I'd fished for a while, caught nothing significant and sat down on a rock at the edge of a deepish run to tie on the new fly so that I could see how well it would drift and float. Since I was not fishing but fly testing, I kept the leader butt in the rod (you can guess where this is going) and flipped the little midge imitation out in the run in front of me. It stayed on the surface fairly well until a big nose rose up out of the run, took the fly down and headed directly across stream. Of course, when the leader butt hit the tiptop, the rainbow and I parted company. That fish probably was the largest I've hooked on a fly; I guessed at the time that it was 16 inches from the nose to the dorsal fin... So I'm guessing this fly will work well, but I do like Wrench's suggestion about a segmented body. -
Here's the recipe that I really like: https://letthebakingbegin.com/artisan-bread-dough/ The loaf is much higher than other artisan recipes I've tried. The negatives are a thicker crust that is a bit tough and a rather bland flavor--but my wife loves it. I'm thinking that adding beer and perhaps the vinegar to this recipe (but adhering to the liquid volume) might be a good idea. I'll also try the cold-start technique. I'm not at all fond of pre-heating the dutch oven.

Update-- this motor is still waiting for its forever home, as they say in pet ads. I want to get rid of it. Make me an offer; chances are good it won't be refused.
