  1. I'll leave the fishery management to the fishery managers. If they say it's OK to keep X fish, I could care less if anyone keeps it. I'm not going to go all frothy-mouthed jihadi trying to make everyone else follow my example. Too much of that as it is.
  2. That green fuzzy where the flap used to be looks fungal.
  3. I'm not sure F&F's tracker would handle a deck-mount harpoon gun too well. And he'd probably change his screen name to Ahab... :-)
  4. Yep. Once you've reached some of your goals, you no longer have the need for wallhangers to prove it. And unless it's a world record, you never know if it's THE foal or not anyway. I had a 12lb walleye mounted, then subsequently caught a 13 and a 15. Their pictures reside by the mount. Added As for smallies, my big ones have all been bycatch anyway, so a quick "wow, that's a nice fish" was all they got before swimming away. Smallies are often beautiful fish, but for me that's where the novelty ends.
  5. Or another method of selective harvest. Everything in the water the size of a bathtub or smaller is potentially dinner.
  6. I guess I've already caught my FOAL, at least until I catch one bigger. I threw it back to see if it would grow. The jury's still out on that. :-(
  7. Great Whites then. Really big ones. Give the guys that hate the stripers something new to worry about. Dunduh DunDuh DUNDAH!... That there wicked tuna looks like fun too.
  8. Mermaids.
  9. Congratulations!
  10. A lot of those 'fins that won't wake when cast do just fine with 100+ feet of line out on a 1/2 mph troll. Before anybody has a bonfire, I'd give a buck apiece for up to 20 that don't work for you but are otherwise intact. :-)
  11. Purty fish! Real purty.
  12. You can see where the flap used to be.

Jerry's statistic (pretty much true btw) got me to digging. It seems that death by dog is at the bottom of the "things to die from" list, followed only by death by fireworks; http://www.nsc.org/NSC%20Picture%20Library/News/web_graphics/Injury_Facts_37.pdf Seriously though, the worst part is it's nearly always little kids that catch it. Way too many little kids.
  14. Flatheads too.
  15. 33 hooks in all, no matter how you allot them.
  16. Good for the bass and crappie, no help for the walleye or whites that didn't spawn this year.

    You're not alone Mitch; http://www.dogsbite.org/
  18. Yeah, the only thing wrong with May/early June walleye fishing is the annoying by-catch of that other green worm-gobbler. Anyone that thinks Beaver's bass population is poor should drag crawlers there for walleye a day or two.
  19. The wealth of scientific information is available to anyone on the web (that wants it). Some you have to pay for, but there's enough free peer-reviewed papers for any subject that blows your skirt up to keep you occupied a while. Let Google Scholar be your guide; http://scholar.google.com/
  20. Salute! Nice 'eye. ~7lb should be the mean for the '02 crop, maybe ~8 by fall.Could be a banner year for really nice fish. Casting or jigging?
  21. I've always been told that fish bleed less in water, but had never actually pursued the matter for details. I just did, and learned that fish have less than 1/4 of the blood per mass as mammals to start with. Their blood coagulates in water about 2/3 of the time it takes in air, or about 30 seconds in water. I found no serious study on the application of anything to the gills (except anesthetics which are absorbed rapidly there), so I think focusing on getting a bleeder back in the water asap would do the fish more good than dinking around playing Dr Goerbels on it.
  22. You can blame that on the package ads we saw on Dew bottles when we were young and impressionable.... ... I've been tickling my innards with Dew for 50 yrs, I ain't dead yet. Might be a different story if I poured it down my lungs though.
  23. Aw, you're just afraid they'll call you a turd herder. :-)
  24. How 'bout 'rock turd'... you know, one of those insignificant little buggers where the experience far exceeds the appearance... It's self-deprecating enough to give the detractors some satisfaction, and it should cut way down on the "what's a rock turd" queries.
  25. If their boats are anything like their cars it shouldn't be much of a problem...
