Contrary to the popular internet myth, silver carp (the ubiquitous jumpers that are freaking people out), weren't accidentally released to the wild by some careless Arkansas fish farmer. Wild samples were reported 2 years prior to aquaculture use. The facts as reported by some folks that were involved and there at the time; http://www.fisheriessociety.org/proofs/iac/kellytwo.pdf Start near the end of page 5, continue thru p7. Only one of the authors is involved in private aquaculture, the rest are or were employed by public agencies, seeking to find non-chemical alternatives to cleaning wastewater. It would be easy to let the rumors alone, virtually ensuring history blames the fish farmer. I find it admirable that some of those involved came out to try to set the record straight, especially for no personal gain.

I'm not gonna believe in, admit to, or complain about being outsmarted by a fish until... ...I get out of my truck at the grocery store and there's a slab of hot, smoky ribs swingin' on a string. ... a plate of nachos mysteriously appears at the bedside when I'm spawning. ... all the roadside billboards say "Eat at Joe's Crab Shack". ... "I was kidnapped by a Catfish, but I got away". headlines on Google News and trends on Twitter.

Missed Fish - The Basis Of Every "fish Story" Ever Told.
bfishn replied to RSBreth's topic in Upper Bull Shoals
I had a 40+ striper take a Woodchopper prop bait (heart attack material of itself), and then take my 12 jon for quite a ride once. Lost him on the second swipe of the net, the hook tangled, then he was gone -
Lunkers do love nightcrawlers, that's for sure. But how does catching a fish on one hurt a neverbaiter?
-
Never heard of such a thing. By what mechanism or means is this supposed to happen?

That explains a lot, I only had $47.

Stories About Fishin' The White And James Before Tr Dam...
bfishn replied to KCRIVERRAT's topic in General Angling Discussion
Been readin' Steamboats & Ferries of the White River, lifted a couple clips of interest. The first is at Jacksonport Ferry; You don't see that on the river these days... And a little closer to home, the pre-bridge ferry at Beaver Town. From the same vantage point, the view today hasn't changed much; -

No where more appropriate than this to bring up the importance of the jerk at the end of the rod. -
If you want to experience the very best of the Kings, I'd highly recommend booking a trip with Jeff Fletcher. His dad (JD) carried on the tradition of the old White River floats there for decades, and Jeff has added a few new tricks to the old ways.

I've had a love affair with steamboats since I opened Life on the Mississippi. I'm getting another fix with Steamboats and Ferries of the White River. If interested, you can preview a lot of it at; http://books.google.com/books/about/Steamboats_and_Ferries_on_the_White_Rive.html?id=tahjbazJK-IC The format is a little loosey-goosey. The writers appear to have been better researchers than authors, but the meat is still there. I think most of you would be surprised at the huge part White River traffic played in the settlement of the southern Ozarks. Descriptions of commercial forays up as far as the James, and up the Little Red, Black, and Current too. Hardships and clearing of shoals at Buffalo, Elbow, Bull, Lead Hill, and Forsyth. Bills of lading for what came in (lots of whiskey, coffee, and sugar) and what came out (lots of bear oil, furs, and cotton). Encounters with ironclads and tinclads during the war. Sinkings, explosions, calliopes, and colorful characters. The first electric lights to shine on the river were early steamer spotlights, the sight of which freaked the locals and their critters plum out. Cool stuff in general.

You don't get off that easy... "Part 1" harbors the implied promise of a Part 2. Lay it out there man, you know you want to. (you do remember what it was, don't you?) :-)

Choosing The Right Jerkbaitand Methods To Use Them

I don't always use jerkbaits... ...but when I do, I jerk a super rogue. Six 'eyes over 10lb agree. -
The closest thing to that I know of is a stripped & customized Hurricane 196 Fundeck.

It's not uncommon for walleye around here to not spawn, especially those than run in the tailwaters. If they don't get the right conditions at the right time, they just go on about their business like normal, either absorbing the eggs or eventually losing them. Spawning is a hormone thing, and it takes a DNA-programmed set of conditions (day-length, temperature, etc, etc) to trigger the release of the hormones that make them spawn. Once that trigger happens, it's only a matter of hours to a couple days before they do it. The hormone injections the MDC/AGFC use for taking eggs does exactly the same thing, often for fish that wouldn't have spawned naturally that year. That said, I've never seen eggs in a walleye around here past June. They should start developing new ones in the next month, but they'll be very small sacs to begin with.

Stories About Fishin' The White And James Before Tr Dam...
bfishn replied to KCRIVERRAT's topic in General Angling Discussion
Here's a jaw-dropper; "The Leader ( a Branson paper) reported a winter 1918-1919 export of 72,000 pounds of cleaned bass and crappie to city markets." Pretty easy for most of us to forget that a century ago, you could do near anything you pleased in regard to fishing, and by most accounts they did just that. Here's the engrossing story (long) of the battle to regulate Ozark river fishing. It's got it all, greed, intrigue, politics... http://thelibrary.org/lochist/periodicals/wrv/v31/n2/w92c.html -

This thread has proven more than interesting for me, it sparked my curiousity for more. This morning my searching led to an awesome trove of "old stories", at the White River Valley Historical Quarterly; http://thelibrary.org/lochist/periodicals/wrv/index.html I've spent the day so far reading there with great interest. Here's one about a week-long WR float in 1907; http://thelibrary.org/lochist/periodicals/wrv/v6/N12/s79f.htm And the MoArk boarding at Branson;
