  1. You're close to Fishinwrench, take it to him.
  2. I might go along if the "tax" was guaranteed to put a LEO on each of the threatened rivers. Clean-up is already being addressed by Stream Teams. Zander I don't know if you are familiar with the river 30 or 40 years ago, but the difference in the experience then and now doesn't seem to me to allow any other solution then cutting back on the numbers. It's standard on so many rivers and the only reason it isn't here is just another reflection of a DNR that doesn't protect the natural resources and instead is more interested in building resorts for financial gain.
  3. Oneshot in my opinion its because there's an outfitter behind every bush. I don't doubt that it is hard, but who are you going to support, the guy with a base up on the highway or one the river, or the one with a gas station or a trailer of canoes in the driveway. Good grief, even the state is the business of renting canoes!!!
  4. I intended to go down yesterday, but I didn't make it, probably go Thursday. I'll post up. I expect it be down to flow level though and that means very shallow.
  5. I cross Bull creek and Bear fairly often and I've never seen them this low. At one gravel bar, that I can see well from the road, the creek is now a shallow 3' wide. Bear has a couple of areas where I can't see water from the road.
  6. It's not the drinking, but whether it affect other people in a negative way. A campground owner can control a drunk in the next campsite that runs his mouth the wrong way and makes others uncomfortable, or wants to keep everyone awake at night. But only the law can control what goes on on the rivers. You have to separate the two. Hank I don't see the bar example applying to rivers. Businesses are private, rivers are like sidewalks.
  7. According to the news here it was a baby that had gotten in his tent and he was bitten when he tried to throw it out. They also reported it as the second fatality in history.
  8. Like Stream Team? The Missouri Stream Teams shouldn't be picking up a lot of trash, but they are. I don't think a tax is the way to go, but more should be done. You put on a tax and by the time you pay for collection, administrating it, and everything else that the gubmit deducts you would be lucky to see 10 cents on the dollar applied.
  9. Lucky you, wish I could say the same.
  10. I have to agree with Chief, it's not about a lot of illegal things going on, but to me it's people thinking that a public river is like a midnight bar. If they can't do it in a city park at noon, they have no business doing it on a river at noon. The hoard that invades some rivers simply takes the experience of a nice float away and leaves nothing else to do but overindulge. I've been on rivers like the NFOW on Saturday and while there are a lot of floaters, there's still enough room to float and enjoy it. That's not true on all rivers.
  11. Strong $ insecticides $ are $ absolutely $ necessary $ to prevent $ starvation. I suspect that the eagles are having an easier time catching dinner with the fish concentrated more.
  12. I've always thought it opened opportunities at specific spots. Anywhere that blocks the flow will create a feeding area for baitfish and hopefully the bigger fish will follow. It's not a whole lot different then a windy point.
  13. I agree with F & F, while I wouldn't want to get bit by one medical experts say a healthy human won't die from their venom.
  14. The wading section is cold, but nothing like a tailwater in size. They are probably camping in Z 2. Hook the niece up with a small lure like a flatfish or Crickhopper. The smallest Crickhopper in yellow will generally get bit a few times. Not many people throw small lures and there are always a few fish who have never seen one.
  15. I can turn over #4 poppers, Stealth Bombers, etc.that are large air resistant flies that need encouragement to straighten out. As I said I use #8 hybrid. I don't think the brand is really important, as long as it's a decent one. The bad thing about a lot of cheap mono's is the fact they are generally inconsistent in diameter. I suspect that a person might match his fly line weight to mono weight and be very close.
  16. Justin I was at an outfitters place on the Niangua, waiting to take out our rig, and I counted 50 Rafts. I didn't have time to count canoes. It was a week day so they didn't have a lot of canoes out.
  17. Fortunately. This area is so dry it would be insane to light a fire.
  18. Butt sections are stiffer. There's a rule in fly fishing, heavier turns over lighter. In order to turn the leader over you need a taper, just like flyline tapers. I know someone will say they use a straight piece of mono with no problems, but they're throwing a fly heavy enough that its momentum straightens the leader and not the leader carrying the fly. A good rule of thumbs is if you can throw a fly a little distance with your hand, you probably don't need a tapered leader, if not then you need the leader to carry the fly.
  19. What I would like to see is a roll back on the numbers of canoes allowed on some rivers. I don't know what the formula would be, but some rivers need it The Niangua is the one that most often comes to mind. I think they should cut all the outfitters back by issuing permanent permits for X number of canoes and temporary for the rest. make the temporary perments good for 5 years or about that. This would give the outfitters time to make the adjustment. I know some, like people who float the NFOW or the 11PT probably think that's a little harsh, but you should go give something like the Niangua a float on a summer Saturday and see what river chaos is.
  20. No the leader stays intact. I don't knot mine between the butt and the mid section. I put the strands through the furled leader and add a touch of glue. All you need then is a tippet and you're ready to go.
  21. I use #8 Yo-Zuri Hybrid to build these and they work well for 6-8wt. You can go up or down accordingly.
  22. With less than a 1/2" since April, I'm fighting to keep a few green things alive, along with the birds, deer, rabbits and squirrels.
  23. Ten footers have a place. I have a Pamlico that has been a good yak for small waters. Ollie can tell you all you need to know about 10 foot yaks and Pamlico's.
  24. I can't remember it being as bad as it is here. Some of the trees have their leaves hanging wilted and most of the vines are beginning to show the same symptoms. No word about fireworks, but in an area that is heavily wooded and with a lot of underbrush on vacant areas, there is no way the volunteer fire department can handle a fire. I think the powers that be here best get over their attack of negligence and wake up before half the town goes up.
  25. Al they collect the fish for the hatchery below Powersite during the run. I have no idea how this affects the overall program, but I suppose one could assume there are some river genetics in the mix. LOZ had a lot of river run fish in the years before Truman, but I don't know if it still exist to any great extent. I know there is still a run, just don't know how strong it is.
