  1. The thing is Ham, the release is centered around the agriculture on the lower White, that's the propose of the lakes. My thinking is the if we start having wet springs, and they have "lost" 5 feet of flood pool, they will start releases early on for longer periods. If they do this the White could run heavy for a longer period, and while this might be good for the guides, the economy that thrives on the "go it alone" fishermen will suffer. If they find the new level is unworkable than the infrastructure will not fit, again. If this wasn't needed in the 40's, 50's, etc, I would think that nothing monumental in the environment has changed. I suppose I remain skeptical and they need to "Show Me" it will benefit those who paid for the dams.
  2. If Shadow Rock isn't kept within a reasonable distance from Forsyth center, it won't be the same. The fair could be moved and the park could be moved, but where? The land in this area still offers very little land that's reasonably level. Five feet today means nothing, but a five foot head start toward filling the flood pool, a five foot higher head for Powersite and the loss of a lot of bank fishing days for people in the area is important. If the lower White is a world class fishery whats going to improve? The only reason it's being considered is because of the drought periods, but they always cycle. The big one is the fact that they came close to flooding the White river agriculture areas this spring and I don't know if they 5 feet to spare.
  3. With some more thought I see another possible problem in Beaver Creek. I assume it will shorten the distance between the lake and the old mill dam, and this could effect spawning. The White bass spawn comes to mind. I'm not sure waht effect it might have on Swan, or the many other creeks that help define the ecosystem of the lake.
  4. Yup, even if they raise the road bed to the powerhouse, 3/4th of the bank space will disappear.
  5. It was that way in the 50's for the same reason, high water. I'm not sure when it fully recovered, but it was back in the early 60's. The cottonwoods at the pothole seem to have survived.
  6. I would think this would wipe out the access at Powersite.
  7. I doubt there are any records being kept. The fact they can't be caught on bait of some kind or fish for and caught consistently, will probably mean they will never be.
  8. One big Oak got a roof here. I lost my biggest Walnut, about a 70'er and I ended up with another tree blocking my only way in or out until Monday .
  9. That is exactly what is wrong with the so called Fair Tax, its unfair. Once its realized that it hits the lower incomes with a higher percentage of their disposable income, they'll start adding exceptions until its as complicated as today's tax system. If you want fair, deduct a flat percentage from wages, either real or assumed. One flat low corporation tax would bring companies from all over the world to headquarter here, bringing billions in low taxes with them.
  10. Gustav brought a lot of rain on dry ground, Ike is predicted to produce more rain, and on saturated ground.
  11. We're in a free economy tied to the free industrial nations. We're not as bad off as the Brits or many Europeans, its a global slowdown fueled by oil money going into piggy banks. If a party says they can eliminate the slowdown and prevent future flucuations, then socialism is the only sure way to accomplish that.
  12. I'm not sure what phil has, but if its a Chief, they don't get hot enough to do large chunks of meat. An electric Brinkman, or one of the chest smokers is a different story. They do a great job. If you're going to pull a butt, after wrapping at around 160, take it to 200, then put it in a cooler, or something to keep it hot for a couple of hours.

    Dry Rub Search

Rubs are almost to simple to make to buy them. A basic is a cup of brown sugar, 1/4 cup onion powder, 1/4 cup garlic powder. More challenging. 2 C brown sugar (I put this on a cookie sheet in a warm oven to dry it some) 1/4 C chili powder 3 T cumin 4 t cayenne 4 t blk pepper 1/8 C garlic powder 1/8 C onion powder 1/3 C paprika 4 t celery seeds You can add non-iodized salt, 1/2 cup, but I've gotten away from using it. This primarily a pork rub, works with chicken though, but I cut the sugar to 1/2 cup and eliminate the celery on beef. The best way to use rub is to apply it 2-4 hours before and let it soak in while you're bringing the meat up to ambient temp.
  14. I don't think there's a stream within an hour of KC that I would let my kids put there feet in. Some of the creeks on the north side of LOZ are clear as well as the ones south. If it were me I would head to Bennett Spring. There are several campgrounds that offer what you want, Riverside is one.
  15. Any chance right below the dam? I haven't driven down there to see where the water is at that access.
  16. Carp feed on them, but until Zebras kill out the native mussels they most likely won't, and when they do they can't eliminate them.
  17. The problem with using the Great Lakes and its tributaries is the sheer size of the biomass. The end results of the invasion won't be known for decades, but lakes the size of TR or BS are drops in the bucket in comparison. Fingerlings of any species need more than cover to survive, they need food and the Zebra's are in direct conflict with the fry. I you're fishing for fewer fish with 100# Power Pro, then the invasion may lack any positives.
  18. They are guesstimates, they have no idea when it will rain or how much.
  19. When you have new line put on, run the spool, with the line on it, under hot water for 2 or 3 minutes. Take it outside and lay the line out on grass and reel it back on while running it through you fingers with a little pressure. When it starts acting up again, repeat the process.
  20. Orvis makes, or made, a tool to slide down the leader and pop the hook out. I generally grab the hook shank with stats and roll it out without touching them. Its not 100% percent, but it works most of he time.
  21. If anyone is interested in trying some lake kayaking, there's a place in Rockaway renting SOT's. The SOTs look to be 14 or 16's, so they should be fast enough for lake cruising. The place is called Bull Creek Outfitters, but I don't know any more than that.
  22. The Niangua, no doubt. I think most of the others mentioned are seasonal, and August ain't the season.
  23. My minds not working this morning, but I think thats Jim ?????, who runs the stores at Bennett and Roaring River. If so its strictly wholesale.
  24. There's a list in the Code of what fish can be used as bait, I don't believe any of those are on it.
  25. That makes sense hogjaw, probably moving into the warmer White during the winter, and moving downstream for warmer water. I wouldn't think it is overharvest, and they should spawn. Apparently the flats do.
