  1. Corn, especially softened field corn. You can also boil it in jello for flavor, but I don't know that it matters much. Wheaties in a pinch.
  2. I don't think it affects the fishing long term, but it can help the spawn. In low water the fry don't have anyplace to hide, in high water they generally have an abundance of vegetation to hide in. So long story short it will improve the future and not change the present of any measurable amount.
  3. A ramp always helps, even the gravel ramps keep you from dragging a boat.
  4. The truth is none of the White river lakes were welcomed with open arms according to the written history. There wasn't a lot of government trust or fertile bottom land in the area and It's said that there was a lot of opposition. The thing is there weren't many people to protest either. The Lower White was an important agriculture area that suffered constant flooding and electricity was needed in NW AR, the only real populated area, and in cities around this area. The Missouri was considered a risk for dams and the land needed was expensive while the Ozark hills weren't worth much. I doubt that congress saw the boom the lakes would bring to this area. Just for reference, I remember a piece of land on TR with something like 1400 feet of frontage and I believe 60+ acres for a whopping $2K. While that sounds crazy you have to remember you couldn't get to any of the lakes from anywhere. Paved wagon trails weren't conducive to short vacations.
  5. Good grief! Is Phil going to shut OAF down?
  6. I've never caught one out of BS. I've caught ozarks in Beaver creek and rocks in TR, but nothing out of the upper end. I flyfished quite a bit last summer for perch in general and caught lots of them, but no ozark or rock bass.
  7. I just wondered if it was like Fellows. To the best of my knowledge Fellows has one security guard on duty, and on land to patrol all the accesses. I don't believe there is a water patrol and I've been told, not by anyone inside, that they have no power to ticket and can only call for law enforcement.
  8. As a small time civil war buff, I would have to disagree about Gettysburg. No doubt his speech was an important part of it, but many other important historical things had already happened. It is true though that it only takes one unusual occurrence to put something in the history books and make changes. I spent a lot of time around the Osage, Pomme and Grand before Truman and it's interesting to go back and find bottom features that I remember. In one case I remembered a small, but prominent rise on the Pomme that was isolated and we found it. Unfortunately in spite of looking fishy it wasn't when we were there.
  9. Do they have any law enforcement on the lake, or is it just security? It's too bad they don't allow inflatables with waders at least. The concept that humans would taint the water somehow probably doesn't have any scientific basis, especially with all the critters around, especially birds.
  10. I didn't know if they came up often or if it was a spring fling. I know they will run up to Truman as late as June, maybe later. I didn't realize they had stocked hybrids there? I wish they would put them in BS.
  11. R.I.P. Jerry. Sounds like a memory. Is this a spring thing there and are the hybrids naturals?
  12. It's one of my favorite areas. I wish sometimes that I lived closer because, like you said, they aren't home all the time., The topwater hybrid bite can be great fun. When you fish from the boat do you start at the cable and drift downstream?
  13. I first fished Beaver in 68', I believe. A buddy and I made the trip from central OK to get in on the early bass fishing. After we got there it turned out that the bass fishing was slow and crappie fishing hot. We spent the whole time we were there crappie fishing. That was the only trip out of many for bass that I ended up crappie fishing.
  14. You can't go by the broken lines, many of the Bull Shoals whites have broken lines. The teeth is the best for ID of the small ones.
  15. That must have been some wedding.
  16. Have you taken the handle side plate off and checked for loose parts floating around? It's sounds like a brake pad might be floating.
  17. I believe they go where the shad go. Shad stay shallow at night and then go to deeper water. I believe the reason for seeing them on the flats is simply because there is less water for the shad to escape in the shallow water.
  18. I was curious because I have caught very few spots out of the James.
  19. How high up was he?
  20. Not may places sell 8' 2 X 4's and if they do they're much more expensive then studs.. Studs are so cheap it wouldn't be smart buy anything else. Mic can save the scrap for the campfire.
  21. I think it can only help improve the products. 3M isn't driven by the industry like Orvis is.
  22. Natural gas doesn't need all that and we have an abundance of it. We have no reliable source of electricity on the horizon, so we best use the least polluting sources, either NG or nuclear.
  23. Eric is a master craftsman with wood.
  24. Yeah and there are no inlays.
  25. Mic It's about the only way to target the resource, and without value there probably wouldn't be the attention given to keep the population healthy. They are a respectable fighter, including going airborne sometimes. We always cut off the head, gutted them and cut the tail enough to pull the spinal cord out. We cut them into steaks, breaded and fried them. I always thought they had the consistency of chicken breast with a mild fish flavor, good eating for sure. The strangest thing in my experience was when snagging in the Osage above the LOZ we would never hook anything less then 25#, with the exception of an occasional 12-15" fish. I could never understand the lack of fish between those sizes?
