+1...Loons have the ability to also dive and feed on deep forage. Gulls just seem to dive and eat shad that are close to or on the surface. Loons are like your graph, they are constantly moving, diving and searching for forage.

Funny that you posted the pic of the trout, as I caught one about the same size in Mill Creek back around the Thanksgiving holiday. That trout smashed a square bill crank bait almost as soon as it hit the water. The Ned will catch them all! Agree with Bill, it's been good winter fishing so far.

Bill, you are correct about the clutter. Remember seeing your screen shots you posted, they are crystal clear, which is what my unit produced before mounting the unit in the bow. I do need to turn the sensitivity down, but I suspect that there is some noise/interference coming from the trolling motor or something else. Been working with the power & transducer cable connections in the bow panel and recently installed a ground wire as per the Humminbird technician. I may have the ground connected to the wrong ground wire in the bow. Adjusting the noise filter on the unit has helped some, but not what I want. If anyone out there has a fix for this problem, I would be interested in hearing about it. I have a 36 volt minn kota maxxum troller. According to Humminbird these are the most difficult motors to fix this problem.

Go to set up in the menu, select advanced mode. Set your down depth manually, never automatic. As you can see mine is set to 60' and the actual depth is 47.6'. You will have to hit your menu button once and adjust it as you fish different depths beyond your previous setting. Chart speed depends on how fast you're moving, but usually max or 75%, depends on how fast you want your screen to refresh. Sensitivity goes from 1 to 10, I usually set at about 7 or 8, but maximum is good if you don't get a lot of screen clutter. Set your sonar beam to 455hz for maximum coverage. I think I have covered the basics, just go out and play with the settings some. I still learn something almost every time out. I don't have the screen split with map/sonar, but that works well if you are trying to stay on a waypoint. The 597 is a decent unit for a compact 5" screen. Just let me know if you have any other questions.

Started the day around 9:00 am with an air temp of around 26 degrees and water temp at 46. Very cold with slick as glass water and ice in the rod guides. Caught a keeper LM on a zoom swimming fluke jr. in albino color about 15 to 20' deep in front of a dock. Worked that area over without any other bites so I left for another location. Saw some gulls and loons working shad a good ways out from a fairly flat secondary point so I shut her down and eased in to see if there were any fish in the area. For the next 2 hours it was non stop catching. I lost count after about 20 in the boat. I caught mostly keeper K's, but got some LM and one smallie. As these fish were deep, all bass were caught on the 1/2 oz white and silver war eagle spoon. I had to move around some as there were several schools of fish at different depths. The shad and fish also continued to move deeper as the sun got higher. Best and most fish came from 30 to 45' deep around some standing timber. I watched several fish come up from the bottom to take the spoon on the graph.....video fishing at it's finest! Not a very good pic of the screen shot, but hopefully you can see the fish streaking up through the shad. What a great day on the Rock and one I will remember for some time. Good info Whit. I haven't seen the new color, but looked them up on Zooms web site. May not look the same in person, but it appears to look a lot like Albino, which is the color I have been using. Had a good day Sunday on some deep fish using the war eagle spoon in white. Will provide more details in a new post after work today.

The keitech is as good as it gets, I use them also. I just have a bunch of flukes and they are cheaper than keitech. The screw in weighted swim bait hook is the way to go when swimming them close or through the trees. I think it's an owner 3.0 size for 4" size baits. Got out today for a while, found a bunch of deep fish, will get a report up tomorrow.

Good report guys. Saturday was a very raw day, hats off to you for hanging in there and having a good day. Donna, the swimming fluke jr has been good to me lately. I have been catching a few good keepers mainly fished just over the top of deep trees either in front of docks or in the middle of creeks and pockets.

Great report. Keeps your boys fishing, less time to get in trouble.
