I know whats coming. I am a small time hosta plant collector. I have currently around 100 varieties. and about 30 or 40 more in 6" pots that I grow for Charity sale. At this time almost all are starting to emerge and several are starting to unfurl their leafs. This is what they look like right now. there are a lot more in other places as well. around the house.

anyone coming this way next week might want to pack a snow suit. Going to be real cold early next week with a slow warm up to follow. I hate this for more reasons than just fishing. We have a ornamental garden that is spread out all over our lot. Among those plants are a small collection of around 100 hosta plants. I was out counting and about 70+ of them have emerged from the ground and of those about 1/3 are starting to unfurl their leafs. SOOOO this means I will be going out this afternoon digging out all our foam plant covers and covering all these things. Then about Wednesday I and can collect them all and pack them back in the shed. I also have about 40 more young plants growing in 6 in pots that I grow and give to charity sales. I think i will just put them against the house and throw big tap over them.

I think it would be helpful for any of you fishing out of a boat this past weekend to have one of those real long crappie poles. They are not real deep around here. Those long poles allow you to stand off. I think parking on top of the brush can be non productive. I had a advantage till I got to old of setting up brush piles then going from one to the other. I think a lot of guys catch a few crappie out of a spot then sit there for a long time and do not catch more. They think the crappie stopped bitting, and maybe they have but I think sometimes you wear out your welcome. If you have a few spotted are know of some productive piles, you can run from one to the other. When you wear out your welcome just go to the other one come later and you will pick up a few more maybe from the first place. This same thing will work with bass if they are ganged up someplace. I think I heard that fish emit some sort of fear hormone. Maybe when you have enought of that in the water they finally get the picture and stop biting.

I have been doing better with jigs topped with Crappie Nibbles. I hace not ledt my dock however.I pend most weekends safely in the yard working out garden

You made your point and I made mine. So that is about Ip all there is to say. We just have a difference of opinion about the whole ned rig thing. .You and this whole forum will never convince me of the the ned rig is not something has ben around a awful long time. . There are times small lures. But on a whole big Fish eat bigger prey. I and I am sure many others were using what your calling a Ned Rig to catch Small Mouth 45 years ago. i bass
-
i just ran accross this post of yours. i know like to push the Neg Rig for whatever reason you do. But that statement you made about grubs is rediculous. I was out the other evening for a hour or so using a grub on a 1/4 oz stand up jig cast right to the bank and retrieved far slower than you would understand. I do agree though that Ned fish " are not Neccarily grub fish" . By a wide margin. " Grub staging area" sounds good too except there is no such area. Sounds more like putting down grubs in favor of a Ned rig is what its all about.

That os probably right Greasy B. I returned to the Mermen a couple years ago becausse we were attending the burial of a friend in nearby Leasburg. I loved that river with a passion when we were out there so much 40 + years ago. that being so I just had to drive down Hwy H and look at it. what I seen down there made me physically sick and still does. People campers trailers you name it all over the place accompanied by the smell of many people. I swore then I would never ever go back. I do bot have to anyway. I have a permant picture of that mess engraved on my mind. That is the trouble with everything just to many people and very few of them giving a darn what they do besides have a good time.

I have never done it. But I fished Clearwater lake a few times just for big carp. These were turned over to a locale church to process. They cleaned them and ground up the meat. Then they mixed them with pickle relish and formed them into paddies. Some they served at the church others they froze and gave to anyone in need. they were pretty good almost like salmon cakes.

NE_slabs Do bot get to encourage it might be tuff. I just got off the dock and caught about 6 or 7 white crappie and only one was a keeper. I think though the the explosion of crappie fishing is very close. I was bass fishing for short while yesterday and only got three small ones on a grub around the points. Had to throw the grub all the way to the bank them very slowly drag it over the rocks just letting it fall. No action on my part at all. Leads me to think they are not to aggressive right now.

Yes that is helpful if you can understand what they are talking about. After he gets done and your confused just say "yeah " and things like that. It kind of helps you feel better. I got a daughter 46yrs old that designs computer systems. She has to reduce everything she does to simple terms about co"mputers for me. So I say yeah a awful lot. She has given me a book a time or two out of her wall sized library to read it "for yourself" and as far as I am concerned they could have been written in a foreign language. I got a 4 yr old granddaughter already know all about e cell phone and speaks a lot of spanish. Her sister is 11/2 and is all over a Ipad. These kids today just flabbergast me in the things they learn so early.

How long have they been a problem in the river. I never seen one kn all my time down there about 40 yrs ago.

Southern ILL is a real good bass area. Are was even in public lake. I have fished Devils Kitchen, Cedar. And Crab Orchard. Crab Orchard is very foreign to what you might expect in a big bass lake. I have not been there in many years. 10 lb bass were take every year. The largest string of bass I ever seen. came from there in the days when there was still a 10.bass limit. the smallest fish on that stringer was over 5 1/2 lbs amd the largest was near 8. I understand that those lakes down there are among the most fertile in region. Tqhere are a awful lot of lakes in the Shawnee National forest and I just wonder if these fish came from them. Beautiful country down there. I have a cousin lives on Lake of Egypt. I used to call it the Illinois Ozarks.

That straight down stuff is going on a lot I imagine around LOZ right now. I find crappie nibbles to be a big help this time of the year. Especially with the current color. I do most of my crappie fishing right here at the house off docks. I have personally. brushed some of them over the past 20 yr or so.
-
Well the surface temperature around me LOZ is 57 and 58 degrees. I am all worms jigs and spoons save for one for the for the rest of the year.

I seen fish hitting because they are curious. That happens a lot and you may not realize you been hit. Especially especially if it is from the rear. I think I seen a couple of those fish grab enough of the lure to get hooked but dropped it so fast there was no chance for the hook to make contact. DTRS made a good point about line and wire. Your fooling yourself if you think your fooling the fish about hiding the line. We do not really fool them with anything. To begin with they see ultra Violet and Infrared. I would love to see what some of these lines and lure as well would look like in the color range. Lines are also like two kids making a telephone out of two tin cans and a sting. They carry sound and I bet 50lb braid is a excellent sound producer. The real old timers even before my time used to hate a noisy reel. They knew that was going to go down the line. I really believe the fish git over 90% of the junk we throw at them because they are curious. The only exception is when they are on the feed.

You do real fine wrench. I can tell you all that have not met him that he is in life what he is on here. SIUSALUKI......Sorry to say it is more than auto correct and more than just the terrible WIFI that seems plague my little neighborhood area here. I cannot believe some of the things I see I typed myself. I seem to have more and more trouble with a variety of things. You will not believe this but I have written many things in the past. Mostly government things such as procedures, SOP's, training programs. I had a terrible job in life but it was in one of the most historical places. I have reviewed the records of every 5 star general we ever had. Plus those of a couple Presidents. At one time I had 14- 5. drawer file cabinets full of ww 2 prisoner of war diaries from the WW2 war crimes trial. I used o be able to recite for you the regulations and history of just about any decoration and award given the military. After I retired I was a on line Volunteer for the old Cyber Angels before Law enforcement took over the watch dog job. I trolled the internet chat rooms and message boards for some of the nuts that use the internet. I know I struggle on here and I am sorry. I look at it sometimes myself and wonder and have to laugh at what the hell i just said. I do better a bit on the computer but not much. http://forums.ozarkanglers.com/index.php?app=core&module=reports&rcom=messages&topicID=16180&st=&msg=34108 -

Me I do not love him. There is all kinds of different temperature variance in his fishing area amd I think he has been squirting here and there. Temperature ranges from 49 to 55 depending on where you are. when it is 49 in tHe shallows and 55 in tHe deep water something is going on. 2 small white bass about 7 inches long and a few crappie. The whites had almost no fight and the crappie were not much better. Must have either been drunk or having a hangover from all the beer squirting up there I suspect. -

squat on it wrench. i do not know exctly how it works but a guy here in my subdivision obtined several lots in here like that. You do not have to physically have a presents on it. I think the law say something in missouri about utilizing it. In other word store a old boat old boat trailer on it. But I was told it was a iffy business. A simpler way would be to by it for unpaid taxes it. again be careful. Some guy tried to pay the unpaid taxes on our boat ramp a few years ago with a view to selling it back to us. Trouble is we have a deeded right to it till dooms day. No matter who or what legally holds the ground it is on. And that includes Morgan county. Nobody can touch it for any reason. Morgan County is stuck with several such pieces or ground.
