South Dakota smallie record broken
Johnsfolly replied to moguy1973's topic in General Angling Discussion
I have had Redbreast 12 that someone else purchased (only $55 per bottle) and enjoyed it very much. I can imagine that the 21 year old stuff is much better. -
Finally some fishing photos. This is a fishing forum not a Travelling Foodie/Camping forum . No one on here is interested in that stuff. Oh we are? OK (getting Ness Syndrome - started an online discussion with my self) you can continue. That grill looks pretty awesome for a small portable. Where did you purchase it? Love the cutthroat and stream photos by the way.

Flysmallie - I used to think that I was becoming a microfisherman then I saw your bass photo . Does the this model still have the super-macro feature? That is what I use for my Sylus photos. I then use Picasa to modify and crop the pictures before I save or post them. My daughter would love that turtle photo.

Ness - that's approx. $200. I may consider it when my kids are on their own and the house is paid off and I'm working as a greeter at Bass Pro shops. -
smallies and hooks in the right and wrong places
Johnsfolly replied to Jim Spriggs's topic in Meramec River
Nice a great smallmouth! And Ouch on the hooked forearm. -
RPS I'll have to show my wife your Asian pear dish. We love Asian pears and have cardamom in house. I wonder how they would be if you poached them in a red wine with star anise. Do you think that the Asian would not stand up to a red, since it is not a strong flavored pear?

We finally got into some tomatoes after we fenced off the garden from the waskly wabbits. So lots of straight up sliced tomato, salt, pepper, and mayo on toast (white for the wife and kids and multigrain for me) sandwiches in our house. Too many fishing trips to be able to pay for bacon and have no lettuce growing. Our cherry tomato and the lemon boy plants are done. The little cherokee purple plant that could earlier this year now has one fruit getting ripe and four or five others following behind. We'll see how far they progress before we pick them for fried green tomatoes. So I may post one more tomato dish. We also have a volunteer butternut squash growing in the garden. Can't wait until that one ripens. I love winter squash.

I used to salt and sell my tails to the folks that make Mepps spinners. Now I don't get more than a dozen squirrels a year and most of them are during this time of year when the tail hairs are not prime. So I typically don't even bother keeping any tails. If I get out after deer season, maybe I'll get back into keeping the tails. Need a lot of tails just to pay the postage, but it was fun to know that the Mepps spinners that I have may have been made with tails that I sold them in the past. Also you can't beat getting the younger squirrels early in the season.

Ham How do you think they would bite in Oct? Unless things don't happen like I intend, I will be out in Wyoming the 2nd through the 17th. I work the weekend of the 24th and will take my wife somewhere the weekend of the 1st (our 21st anniversary is the 30th). I owe her a trip to the Crater of Diamonds SP. If we go down that way on the 30th, maybe a side trip on the way home is possible.

MOpanfisher I agree about the spider webs. I hate having to peel them off of my face. However, I do love to find the squirrels hitting the hickories. They just love them and come from all over once there is a tree with ripe nuts. It can get to be like a video game. Too much fun to pass up.

I wanted to take advantage of a slight drop in the temperature last night and try for some squiirrels and wild mushrooms. With all the rain we have had I have been thinking about some spots that have had chicken mushrooms and black trumpets in the past. Those spots also have had squirrels as well. Took containers for mushrooms and my pack for any bushytails. Hiked around and was only finding single and doubles on chanterelles. Its been a great mushroom summer, so finding just a few was a little dissapointing. I did find a large oak tree with acorns and hulls scattered underneath. Nothing in the branches above. Have it check it out later. Finally found a large group of giant chanterelles. Most were a day or two older than I like. So I only picked the newer ones. Now that I had enough mushrooms, I really needed the protein for my meal. After another 30 minutes ended up back at the oak tree and there were two young squirrels tearing up the acorns above me. I tried and tried but just could not get a spot for a good shot. If I had a shotgun maybe a different story. I let them go after about 20 to 30 min of positioning and repositioning for a shot that never came. It was now getting dark. I got out into the grassland area of this property and was walking the field edge and heard the sound I was hoping for on this trip. It was the unmistakable sound of a squirrel cutting a hickory nut. I got into the brush and found a couple of hickories and could not find the cutter. Did see one other squirrel in the branches but it was too dark for a shot. Didn't get one on this trip, but now know a couple of feed trees to get on them when I get back down to hunt them again.

Friday 8/12/16 Bink's Spoon (I talked in this one)
Johnsfolly replied to dan hufferd's topic in Stockton Lake
Dan Great to see you back on the water. Really liked your tutorial approach and the graph screenshot. Looked like a great day on the water. Learning a lot. Cant wait to try those spoons. -
Ham Nice bunch of fish. Congrats on the slam!

Quillback Sounds like a fair amount of work that would need a lot of hands. Maybe if the MDC brought in those hog huntng girls from Florida, guys would line up and volunteer to help.
-
In states like Texas, SC, Georgia, and Florida where they are already well established they might as well hunt them and deal with the damage. The belief here is to eradicate them before the population gets established. May already be too late. We'll have to see. I have never hunted pigs. It looks like fun. No problem leaving MO to do it.

Ness do you frequently argue with yourself? Do we need a peace treaty between you and you? Is there enough whiskey for that? -
Yes we were, which is why Ham growled in an earlier post. Thanks for bringing up that bitter disappointment ! Really surprised that they were caught on a husky jerk. May have to try that next time.
-
It may take days or weeks to get a sounder comfortable enough to trap them all at once. Also once any pig in that group gets skittish they may not get trapped. So the MDC doesn't want any hunters to inadvertently alert the group by trying to harvest a pig out of that group. As BH said, pigs are pretty smart and they may leave the trapping area meaning all the preparation done to trap them is wasted. The other big reason the MDC has banned pig hunting is to try to stop people from continuing to release pigs just so they could hunt them later. Rabbits have nothing on pigs when it comes to having piglets. A sow could have up to three litters a year and possibly five or more piglets at a time. They eat everything, plants, animals, mushrooms (the horror) that they come across and it looks like a tilling job from hell when they have rooted through an area. Hunting will never effectively comtrol a pig population.

Is this River Level OK for Wade Fishing ?
Johnsfolly replied to 2sheds's topic in North Fork of the White River
2sheds Great post! Glad to see have a good time on the NFOW and on catching your PB rainbow and brown. Have to say I am a bit jealous of the logperch. Congrats! -
Nice catch. I agree with Trythisonemv about being a skipjack. What bait did he use to catch them? Was the water clear or colored?
-
Still great to see three trout on four casts. Can't wait to get back down to Taney.

Ness You can supply the whiskey only if it be can be drunk from that holiest of GRRAAILLS!!! Look at the BONES!!! Ever since I got on this forum never understood why you don't go by Tim. 12 year old Bushmills is one of my favorite whiskeys. I'm patial to Red breast or Laphroaig scotch. -
"You can't have egg, bacon, spam, and sausage without the spam!" "But I DON'T LIKE SPAM!" "Dear, don't cause a fuss. I'll have your spam. I love it! I'm having spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans, spam, spam, spam, and spam." Flysmallie - You were lucky! "We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o'clock in the morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down mill for fourteen hours a day week in-week out. When we got home, out Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!"

Fishing with Ham, Shadow Bass and PB Smallie
Johnsfolly replied to Johnsfolly's topic in Current River
Gavin It was a great time. I really appreciated Ham putting up with me all day. I'm not the best navigator due to being easily distracted by suckers or minnows. -
42. That's the answer to life, the universe and everything. Now we just need to find out what is the real question.
