  1. Ham - How is the species list going this year? I bought a number of #18 and #20 midge to try to catch more minnow species. Interested in a smallest fish contest?
  2. I can't recommned any better spots in Missouri than those that have been suggested already. I can't imagine going anywhere without some lures, especially without some 1/8, 1/16, or 1/32 oz marabou jigs. Good luck and enjoy the trip. Post those catch pictures.
  3. Looks like the perfect cure for your cabin fever. Great looking fish on the blog.
  4. I hope that she continues to like fishing. My two other kids just don't like it as much and we don't get out as much as I would like.
  5. Nice fish. congrats on a good day on the water.
  6. Sounds like a good time. We were down on the 9th and had a great time as well.
  7. I had to work on my B-day last Sunday, but was able to get down to Bennett Springs on Monday the 9th with my yougnest daughter. We started fishing above upstream of the whistle bridge. We didn't see a lot of fish there and the fishing started slow. My daughter did catch her largest rainbow trout to date on a glo ball in light pink/yellow/white combination. The fish was 14.25" and weighed 1.25lb. We probably caught 9 fish total before moving upstream where we fished the pool above the rock dam. My daughter wanted to catch her limit, because then I would let her fish for the "bottom dwellers", i.e., banded sculpin. There were a lot more fish above the dam and we fished schools near the bank and off of the handicap pier. Once on the pier, she kept two more trout and with three on the stringer I gave in and let her fish for sculpin. It was on between her and I as to whom could catch the smallest and largest sculpin. I was still pretty focused on trout fishing and caught and released several more fish mostly on 1/32 and 1/64 oz marabou jigs in various colors. I missed an opportunity to hook a 3-4 lb rainbow when it had my jig in its mouth, but spit it out just as I was setting the hook. My daughter caught the largest sculpin on the same glo ball she caught her big trout. I caught the smallest, 2.6" on a John Deere microjig. Here is the whopper. In 2015, I want to catch a bunch of new species and so I bought a number of #18 and #20 flies to be able to go after several minnow species. I put on a #20 olive zebra midge and was fishing for sculpin in the deep pool below the rock dam and told my daughter that you can catch big trout with this tiny lure. As if on cue, I caught a 12" rainbow on the midge. By the end of the day, my daughter did catch a total of 7 trout and we kept four of her fish that were all over 12" and nine sculpin. I ended up with 23 trout and four sculpin. A pretty good day.

  9. My friend ties a black bug similar to your ant with rubber legs that you cannot keep in the water too long before getting hit. In the lakes we fish, the bass hit them as well as the bluegill.
  10. Great pictures. I love the close-ups in the blog. Alwasy nice to see good looking browns and rainbows.
  11. Sounds like someone is trying to defer folks from hitting Bennett's on opening day.
  12. Good Luck to anyone going out on Sunday. If work doesn't keep me in, I will likely head somewhere else than any of the trout parks. I really hate a crowd.
  13. Ham - Nice photos and congrats on the PB brown trout.
  14. Awesome rainbow. Have to love winter trout fishing.
  15. The trout parks do not provide the potential of catching a state record brown trout or in some cases even a small brown trout. So I have to go with Taneycomo as the better option. Due to the distance from my house I do fish the trout parks frequently, but dream about Taneycomo.
  16. I would like some ot that pudding. Great photos.
  17. I use the same set-up as Seth with PLine fluoroclear in 2# and 4#. I have found that at Bennett's I get more hookup and better casting distance with the microjigs (1/125 oz) using the 2# than the 4#. I use the 4# more for small crank or jerkbaits in the bigger rivers. After hearing the tales of the nanofil, I may hve to consider that for the bigger bait fishing.
  18. Awesome fish. The article didn't say if he released the fish. I don't like to see fish that large only being supported by its jaw for the picture.
  19. Has anyone fished this creek? I have seen a couple of different statements about how I can get access to the base and the creek. Anyone have experience that could tell me what do I have to do to get access? With the short length of the creek and the fact that this is a white riboon creek, I would imagine that there aren't many hold over trout after a couple of days from the last stocking event. Does anyone know where I can find out when the MDC may be stocking this creek? Any information would be appreciated.
  20. Congrats on the fishing trip. Even with the less than stllear conditions, it was a good trip. Also good to get a few saltwater fish on the species list.
  21. Awesome brown trout. I also liked the rainbow in the photo gallery. Your hard work is paying off.
  22. We'll be visiting my daughter at UCM in Warrensburg that weekend. Won't get down there this year. I do go to the Missouri Deer Classic in Columbia every year. I just found out that not only have they moved the venue from Columbia to St. Louis. It will now be in July/Aug instead of March. Will still try to get out there for that event.
  23. I got out first thing this morning and drove 20 minutes (longer trip due to the snow/rain) and had a line in by 6:50 am this morning. Within 2 minutes, I was landing the first trout of the morning. I was fishing Gulp salmon eggs about 8 inches off of the bottom. By 8:05 am, I was packed up with four in the box and heading to work. I won't make any excuses. I love to catch trout and I enjoy sharing them with my family. I would normally have to drive 115 miles or more to go trout fishing. So I really enjoy the urban trout program. Yes the fish on the opening of the catch and keep season are fairly easy to catch with bait. However, they do taste good grilled, baked, pan-fried, or in chowder, etc. I look at this program as the MDC's version of the "The Lottery" where the barbarism of killing and eating trout is done in a way such that those wild trout areas that are pristine or held in higher accord, like, Blue Springs, Mill Creek, Spring Creek, etc. are not affected by my predatory tendencies. I will enjoy the fish during tonight's Super Bowl and am already planning my next trout fishing trip to get four more for the box.
  24. I'm lookiing forward to more catches in the future.
  25. Great fishing story and photos. I haven't gone that far south from mid-Missouri yet to fish. However, may have to consider a long weekend trip down that way after seeing those colorful browns and big rainbows.
