  1. If you break off with straight fluoro or mono you don't have to re-tie after getting hung up? That's new to me.
  2. From Topaz to Hebron is full of Smallies, but like Ham said they usually aren't big. That being said since I know you like waving a fly rod around I like that whole upper stretch for throwing poppers - lot's of topwater action and usually pretty quiet during the week. Even if the biggest one you get is 14" or so - still one really nice day of fly fishing for Bass if you catch 40 of them. I t does get skinny in summer - but you can wade a lot of it that way, too.
  3. Yeah - it was either spey or centerpin - some big spooled reel too big for where they were at at any rate. You can't expect people who make commercials to get fishing tackle right - they don't even know the stuff they're hawking will be recalled in two years for making your left ear the size of an elephant's or whatever.
  4. If it was all CPR (Catch, Photo, Release) I might make it sometime.
  5. Kind of like the guy in one ad that's using a spey rod on a stream about the size of Crane. Funny. But back to the topic - no, you can fish for Bass during the "no-keep" season, just release them all. You also have to pay attention to specific areas - close to my place Lake Springfield has it's own lake regulations, but the three little lakes on the Finley are still considered the river, and no keep until the stream season opens. I constantly have to tell people that fishing the park in Ozark. "Sorry bud, but you gotta throw that Bass back... "
  6. You guys are really getting some good press these days - but you deserve it.
  7. Depending on price I might want the 7ML HMX Spinning. I make it down to Forsyth often.
  8. Still some ice yesterday - probably more tomorrow.
  9. Monofiliment line has a shelf life - how long kind of depends on the quality and you store it. It's also cheap - so I'd just recycle it and buy new. I use superlines almost 100% of the time now - some of my crappie setups sit for 10 months or so until the next spring, and have had the same Sufix braid on them for 6 or 7 years. My two catfish rigs are the same - plain old spiderwire on them for years and still just fine. I used to buy bulk spool of mono and refill every few trips - glad I don't have to waste my time and money like that anymore.
  10. When I chuck spinnerbaits on Table Rock, Beaver, or Bull I mostly use compact but heavy spiinerbaits in the 1/2 to 3/4 weight on a 7' MH BPS Crankin' Stick. I hate the stupid powerhump handle though - I sand it off. I'd use something heavier but I use braid so it works.
  11. I fixed it for you.
  12. I use braid (or fused like NanoFil or Fireline) on spinning with fluoro leaders. I stay a LONG way out from anything I'm fishing - and mostly cast to the bank or cover, but sometimes parallel bluff banks.
  13. Glad you got it back in and hauled home - sometimes it goes bad and does not end that way.
  14. I use my own hair jigs ( both bucktail and craft hair) year - round. I mostly use plastic trailers, but I have used pork in the past. My favorite trailers now are the powerbait or gulp leeches, and the new ZMan Leechz. I used to buy the punsher jigs and also tie my own on a couple of different jig heads but I make my own now. Smallmouths and Spots really like a small hair jig with a leech trailer - Smallmouths in the creeks love them, too.
  15. True - I launch the canoe from the mud bank instead paying and getting in the way of "real" boats at the ramp.
  16. I was going to drive over yesterday but stayed up by the Dam on the North side so I don't know. I did see several trucks with trailers at Shadow Rock - don't if they were there because River Run is still locked or are to cheap to launch from a real ramp. Sorry.
  17. I've had several complaints about posting about an entire stretch of river or nothing specific but a "bluff bank" on smaller lakes. My only response is wow - believe or not there may be fish in there. You may be able to catch them ( but most likely not).
  18. Everyone gave the best tip there is - you can overwork the lure, and work it too fast, too. Some days I cast a suspending jerkbait and don't get it back to the boat until 4 or 5 minutes later if I'm sure there's fish there. Instead of jerk, jerk, pause, it's more pull, twitch, sit.
  19. GREAT- can't wait for the Bull Shoals Walleye one. Probably go to see Al again, too.
  20. I've been using cheap crappie "Jig Poles" as half-arsed Tenkara rods since my son got rocking the panfish pole action a few years ago. Neat, interesting, and pretty simple.
  21. I've been really throwing my own little 1/8-ounce jig a ton this past year - I would love to get a casting setup more for the river than the big boat, but it's really a delicate balance between enough flex in the tip of the rod, and enough backbone to set the hook if there much of a weed guard - I haven't found the right rod yet. Spinning is easy - the same old 7' Medium/Fast action rod I've been using for years.
  22. I like bright colors (Clown, anything with an orange belly) on sunny days, and more natural, translucent colors on cloudy days. I'll try Rapala's Tennessee Shad anytime.
  23. I have to remove snow from rental units if it accumulates, so it kind of double screws my plans - roads too bad to go anywhere, but still have to go somewhere.
  24. Cool - Nothing like christening the new boomstick. I was down there fishing last week - only saw a couple of mallards and a small flock of Gadwalls.
  25. It can be hit and miss - if you figure out where the Bass are it can be pretty good -
