This evening was great. Caught them very well on a scud on a fly rod from Lookout to Short Creek. Caught one rainbow in the shallow part of the Lookout channel that was probably 22-inches. Didn't measure it or get a pic, but it was a stud. It fought me really hard on 6x. Caught the heck out of the browns on a jerkbait once the sun went down. Lost one that was really nice. I fear I'm really good at losing big fish instead of landing them..

Same...same..

Nope. Not stockers. Can confirm

Fished 7-9 this morning. A lot better overall. Not a darn thing on the streamers so I decided to drag an egg and scud (sizes 18-20) and they were munching. Several fish were on as I caught up to the line after the cast. But, I did lose a big, big rainbow. Drifting below Fall Creek on the flat side I had a fish hit. Gave decent head shakes, figured it was a nice one, and went to let it play. Didn't think much of it. Then it started to run upstream..except it couldn't. Had no idea what was going on so I hit the trolling motor on 10 and followed it, reeling in line. Got to where I could almost see it and it jumped straight out of the water, less than 10 feet from me. Came back down and snapped. It was 8-10 lbs if it was an ounce. Biggest rainbow I've ever had hooked on Taneycomo. The thing was a dang football and long. Turns out my line was double wrapped around the tip of my rod. That's what I get for using a rod I jig with for dragging.. We'll see what this afternoon brings.

I fished those in the Driftless and never caught a thing ha! The Driftless Angler has a good shirt. Pink squirrel holding up a "BELIEVE!" sign.

As I am wrapping up my current job, free time is finally something I have to use. Came down yesterday morning and fished with Blake from 6:30-3:00 pm and it was flat out tough. We landed six fish. Granted, we were definitely trying to make them bite on what we wanted, but it was a battle. I started out throwing one of the articulated streamers I tied, a white Galloup's butt monkey. First cast I had a good fish on but never saw it since it was still fairly dark. It gave good head shakes and popped off. I had one other fish on, a smaller rainbow, and then a lot of nothing. Blake threw a 110+1 and landed two fish, a 15-inch rainbow and a 10-inch brown. Got down to Lookout and finally landed one, a 19-inch rainbow. Pretty cool to land a fish that size on a streamer you tied! Below Lookout I had a brown chase me nearly to the boat and it was definitely 20-inces or more. He whiffed and went back to the depths. Four hours later I was tired, but I did what I set out to do. Blake started dragging a 762 jerkbait and landed two back-to-back as I still beat the water with the monkey. We then fished from below Fall Creek to the Landing in certain areas drifting big shiners on a rig he learned on the White. He had one fish on below Short Creek and I caught a solid 17-inch rainbow above Monkey Island. Other than that...a whole lot of nothing. Fishing is definitely tough and has been for a while. The size of the fish remain strong, though, and that dampens the lack of success quite a bit. We saw two fish that looked like smaller threadfin shad in the water yesterday, which may have explained the affinity to white. Not enough to call it a white bite by any means. As TR warms, not sure we'll see an influx of shad unless we get flood gates this spring. I'm going to give it a go today and see what happens. Nothing else to do, might as well fish!

10000% agree. He's also quick and to the point if you don't like to listen to Kelly ramble on for 45 min. -
Let me ask a couple folks and see what the status is. It really used to be awesome. For fun now, in the daytime, they can go to the spillway beneath longview. Always stuff to catch there, and easily.

Get out of here, I'm the young guy.. Welcome! Great group here.

That place used to be loaded with big bass. Over the last few years the grass took over and it became basically unfishable. They dredged it out but killed all the fish, from what I'm told, so I have no idea the state it's in anymore. My buddy used to live right by it and we would fish a lot after work in college. He caught an 8.2 largemouth and I landed a couple 6-lb fish on frogs. This is 2010-2012, though.

@BilletHead lookin good! Curious as to where you get your fly tying materials in your neck of the woods? Order online? I'm sure you save the deer tails and bird feathers you harvest as well.
-
Well that's inaccurate because they're in Table Rock, Bull Shoals, Taneycomo, Stockton, Pomme, etc. The arms off Stockton and Pomme are some of the best.
-
That sounds like a good idea. I think I might make duck or pheasant carnitas..
-
You will not be disappointed. Tamales are fantastic and they make them right there in the store/restaurant. Highly recommend the tacos de lengua as well. The sauces are actually hot, too, unlike more commercialized places.

Exactly! White bass and bluegill are the best IMO. Walleye is good baked, but if you fry it, it's just another flaky white fish like crappie (aka no taste other than the breading).
-
Hahaha my apologies! I do not eat the hybrids, those are just fun. But baked, parmesan crusted white bass is about as A+ as it gets!
-
Have you been to Carniceria y Tortilleria San Antonio in KCK? It has some of, if not the best, Mexican food I've had in the KC area.
-
Honestly I think they taste better than crappie. And they're a blast to catch, especially on a fly rod. It's a SWMO tradition to target the white bass run.

Good to know! Just bought my first pack yesterday.

Just got some of the new Ahrex hooks for clousers and streamers. Size 2. We'll see how they perform. They are sturdier than a B10S as far as I can tell. Almost saltwater sturdy.

I think this forum is a great resource. Glad I was told about it four years ago. There are definitely some things that get out of hand, but that's what being behind a keyboard facilitates. I like talking about other things than fishing. The cooking thread, movies, duck hunting, etc. is all valuable information that I enjoy discussing with other guys on here. Heck, with the state of the world we're in sometimes it's just good to have a discussion with other folks. And times aren't getting easier. (I know I'm young but it's true). I post quite a few fishing reports when I do fish, whether it's Taneycomo, Truman, LOZ, or the like. I start a duck hunting thread each year that a lot of guys use to discuss the season, and it's about the most civil public discourse I've ever seen on waterfowl hunting. Facebook duck hunting groups are vicious. I've used advice from members on here for articles as well. I am friends with quite a few people on here now, too. I moderate the Lee's Summit Area Fishing page, and I will say this: we are strict on rules and have to approve every post before it goes live. And generally, the members appreciate it because it keeps things focused on fishing in the area. No memes, posts from areas outside of LS, ads, business plugs, language, etc. But that's Facebook, and a very niche group. A forum with countless sub-forums lends itself to a variety of topics, which is a catch-22. I tend to like it, but that's just my opinion. I'm with Wrench--if you don't like a topic, don't click on it.

@fishinwrench @BilletHead what size are you guys tying? You've inspired me to whip some up. Thinking of tying a big ol' boy on a size 1 or 2 B10s.

Those look really good. Don't hit yourself with a sculpin either. Man oh man I hit myself square in the back in 20 mph wind last year and I got teary-eyed. Those large dumbbell eyes sting. Don't call em eye closers for nothing.
