  1. It's a long weekend, Marty. We will likely starve...
  2. Spent the afternoon cooking in the negative temps. Put some duck legs in the crockpot with some stock, rosemary, and Slap Ya Mama and let them go for a few hours until they were fall apart. Kept the skin on so the fat rendered out. Made homemade ramen with the meat. Phenomenal. While I was waiting for the duck legs to be done, I made a big pot of deer chili.
  3. Looking to get a final head count so we can plan the most important part, meals, accordingly. Me, Big Hands Rob, DJ (Saturday), Kev, Dustin, Seth, Cody, Ray, Marty, Pat, Phil, my buddy Cheyne and his wife (Friday), Jeff (?), Les (?), and Bill and Becky. Anybody else confirmed coming?
  4. Heck yea, Les! Glad you got out and had an enjoyable day.
  5. John’s wife is making her famous baked beans for us. Probably the best beans you’ll ever have. Not sure the effects will be good in tight quarters, but..
  6. I will be bringing deer bologna (more like summer sausage), crackers and cheese as well for snackable items.
  7. It's not really a difference of opinion at all. It's a fact cheaper lines don't fish well and don't last. Better made lines do. If, like Wrench said, you are actually fly fishing and not outlet dunking. You can use a cane pole with nylon for that. @Flysmallie do yourself a favor and stick with the Rio Gold! It'll last years and you'll be happy with it.
  8. Fact! I always tell people you can have a cheap combo and if you put good line on it you'll be just fine. SA Amplitude and Sonar for me.
  9. Do we have any workshops Cody can fall asleep at this year? @grizwilson can snipe a pic again! But really, any ideas? I was thinking of a fly tying instruction for the hopper I have great success with on Taney.
  10. Don't forget the garlic!
  11. As a fat guy, I'd have to say the great food is a little more than 10%. Plus, Jeff, you saw what happens when it's nasty out..big browns are caught!
  12. If you are making gumbo, I can go ahead and do turkey and dumplings then. That way it will be totally sans any hooved animal byproducts so DJ can eat it. I use duck/goose fat for it and everything else is safe for him.
  13. Did a test run of duck dirty rice Sunday. It turned out great. I will make a batch of it Friday or Saturday. Can even use some of the turkey legs in it, Les.
  14. I could for sure. But the problem is I only catch trout over 3-lbs. That’s where the problems would start. It’s a real curse. In all seriousness, just going to wait until mid-February after Taneyfest and CFM events. Be ready for walleye time!
  15. Oh I ruptured a ligament brushing in a blind. I need surgery but the recovery is 4 weeks and can’t lift anything over 3 lbs after. So really throws a wrench in everything planned.
  16. I will be there, but I doubt I will be able to fish with my hand messed up. I will cook and I'm happy to drive a boat around for people/guide them. Can even use my gear if you need to.
  17. Blasphemy @gotmuddy! Say it ain't so! Missed you all. Hopefully I'm healed enough for Taneyfest so I can see most of you then. Looked like a blast as always.
  18. Swopes up the road or The White Grill? That's the real question..
  19. Ryan is out of SWMO. He lives in Billings and fishes the James and others around there. Ryan is a great guide. I have fished with him multiple times for stories and for fun. Highly recommend him. He would put you and your daughter onto them and have a great time doing so. Another is Michael Collins of Misty Mountain Guiding Service. He fishes out of a River Rat like Ryan. I have not fished with him, but I know him, and he is a great dude. If you don't want to do a drift boat, Billy Smith of Eminence is A+. He has a jet boat and fishes the Current, Black and Jacks Fork. I have fished with and known Billy for years. He is just an awesome person. Hope that helps!
  20. Lol the bank is where the fish are in high water! Sue me.
  21. Made a loaded baked potato soup yesterday and let it simmer while doing yardwork. Have a nerve test for my back and hands today so I had to take it easy this weekend (aka no hunting). I'll add some pics when I get home. It turned out great. Didn't really follow a recipe, just fried the bacon in a dutch oven, onion/garlic sweat, flour, chicken and beef broth, yukon golds. Boiled until the taters started to soften up and cut the heat down. Let it got for an hour or so. Added in heavy cream, milk, sharp cheddar, residual bacon, and chives. Darn good on a nasty evening!
  22. @eknapp you asked specifically about the White. These other guys are right for other water. A 6-wt is my favorite, like Wrench said, overall for non-White river streamer fishing. I went through a lot of failure, including using inadequate gear, and learned from some great streamer fishermen down there over the years. Feel me to send me a message if you want some more info, guides, etc. that can cut your learning curve down. I now fish the White a LOT with streamers up to 7-inches (big double deceivers, Slug-Os, DnDs, etc.). You'll want your 8-wt and heavy sinking line to be able to bang the banks easier, get to the strike zone, hookset, and to handle a potentially large brown in heavy generation. It will get tiring, but it's better to have the right gear. It makes a big difference. If you do it right, you will be fairly close to the bank or on shoals/drop offs. With the heavy sinking line, you will be able to shoot the streamer to the right area quicker and more efficiently. But when that 24-inch brown comes from the depths, crushes your streamer and you strip set two B10S stingers into his face, Strangehold starts playing in your mind and the adrenaline is better than throwing any nymph, scud, or dry fly.
  23. 7 or 8 weight. I have a Ross Animas with two spools, one with SA Sonar that is 300-grain for heavy generation and another spool with 150-grain for varying flows. For the White, you'll almost always want sinking line. You'll be throwing a big streamer when the water is running. You'll be able to throw anything with that setup. I have a 7-wt NRX+ that handles like an 8-wt so I have versatility. Not sure what rod you're looking at, but I sure do love that Loomis.
  24. Who's going to bring the trout to leave on it all night??
  25. I will make wild turkey and dumplings again since that was a hit.
