I got into the whites real good there two weeks ago. Catch one on almost every cast. Rooster tails or anything with white including road runners. Some of the best white bass action I have ever had. One gate partly open and turbines running.
You might reach them with a one oz spoon on a bait caster when they are out far. If you can get close to the area you'll get some on the fringe. Saw a guy doing that when the rest of were catching them not far off the bank. His fish from the middle were bigger.
We were at Truman from Sunday to Thursday. Put the boat in at state park marina and my water pump was only putting about 20% of what it should be so back on the trailer after talking to an outboard mechanic buddy. He said water pumps are a lot cheaper than motors. Kind of a downer on the first full day of the trip. Tuesday went below the dam and the whites were on fire. You could catch all you wanted in a very short time. Quite a few people there in the evenings but only a few in the morning. More than limited both days but only kept ten each day. Here's a pic that isn't real clear but you can see the fillet knife in the top right hand corner. So the trip turned out pretty good after all. Can't wait to get to Taney in a few weeks
The simpler the better and the cheaper when you are snagged. There are snags all over Taney and the change all the time. The rigs sold in Phil's shop work just fine or you can buy the hooks and weights and tie your own. Bell weight on the bottom and a dropper looped tied with a double surgeon knot about 18" up the line. Use the lightest weight you can for the current and you won't get hung up as much.
We have fished all the way down to Powersite and caught fish most of the way down. Seems like the fish we caught way down the lake were more silver colored than the rainbow colored above Rockaway. Easy to slow drift any kind of bait or jigs down there.
Thanks for the tip Gator. Mine is still in the boat in the shed and it does get hot in there. I'll bring it up to the house today. I kept mine in our cabin and put it on when I went down to the dock and took it off when I came back to the cabin. It was hot that week and it did not bother at all to have it on. I have never set mine off so have not had to rearm. I hope mine never gets set off and that I only wear it and don't use it.
Phil, for my last trip I bought a tournament auto inflate and never took it off while on the boat. Couldn't even tell I had it on. So listen to Phil boaters that fast water can be dangerous and only takes a nano second for an accident to happen.
Hi momule. I'm just across the river from you. Have fun on the Mo but be careful in that 14 footer. Some tough currents on there. good cat fishing above Washington.
Amazing how fast fishing conditions can change on the dock. We would have been real happy with this result on Tuesday. Hope its good like this in a couple weeks when we come back.
Last year we were coming in to takeout at Bridgeport and Tim Horton was backing his rig to the water. He popped the boat off the trailer and drove off to park. The boat started drifting out and was about 80' off the bank when he got back to the ramp. We thought he had one of those remote control trolling motors. He yelled out and asked if we could pick him up and take him out. We pulled in to the ramp in my Tracker and took him out to his boat which had more $$$ worth of fishing gear and electronics than my boat cost. He was a pretty nice guy though and we wished him luck in the Elite derby that week. Don't remember but I don't think he made the cut. There were also a bout 5 other pro rigs parked there including Chris Lane.
Phil, be careful what you ask for you just might get it. Drama would be the least of the outcomes. I signed up a few days after this opened and I like being a charter member.
That day we were below the steps at the hatchery and it seemed there were very few people there. It was about 100 degrees and late in the afternoon. We went there after fishing out of a boat. At least where we were there were very few people That is what I remember but it was a long time ago. Maybe just a fluke at that time or at my advanced age the old memory is slipping.
That was over 40 years ago and the "strip" was nothing. Most anything in Branson was in downtown. We put in at the old Roark resort and motored up past what is now Lilley's. Might have seen a dozen other boats. You're right those days are long gone.
This is always a good read. Looks like the trophy area is holding good numbers and larger fish than the lake as a whole. I remember my first trip to Taney 40 years ago and the fish we caught were much bigger on average than what we catch now. We wet waded by the dam on that July trip and there might have been 10 or 12 other people there on that Saturday afternoon.
Couple years ago we were white bass fishing at the dam with stick baits and accidentally snagged about a 60 lb spoonie. Nice fight on 4 lb test and after about ten minutes it decided the game was over and it made a big dive and broke off. Fun while it lasted.
Scroll down the forums to the Home and Travel section. There's an Eateries forum there. Not too many post on it though. Check it out http://forums.ozarkanglers.com/forum/150-eateries/
