    What's Cooking?

I just put a slab of corned beef that I soaked overnight through the vacuum seal process. It now hangs from the side of my pickling pot in 180 degree water. I am targeting 6 PM for dinner. Before then I will add pouches of carrots and potatoes. This promises to be an interesting experiment.

  5. Before Rapala purchased the company from the Oklahoma Storm family and standardized everything, the company was famous for using whatever materials and components they could get. O rings, snaps, hooks and even the plastic chemistry changed. Many pre Rapala warts are opaque without clear bills like the one on the right in your picture. I believe the cache of the pre Rapala warts is based upon the unpredictably of the materials and components. The modern wart rarely runs untrue, but also, rarely has that perfect seek and find the center action. I fished warts before Rapala bought the company. I fish them now. Both versions work if you can get them to run true. I admit the Rapala warts are better for trolling. I believe the pre Rapala warts are better for grinding for bass. I just don't own any.

    What's Cooking?

Brushed the dough with garlic oil. Layered provolone cheese with tomatoes and artichoke on top. Sprinkled with mozzarella.
  7. I am glad you were able to get in and out. When he wind is strong, few ramps provide more shelter than Holiday Island. The lake is so skinny up here, there are always places to hide from the wind and still fish decent locations.

  10. Upper End - Big M Marina has a small restaurant on the dock in the summer. Sandwiches and that type of thing.

    What's Cooking?

We fixed a roasted beast last Saturday. As official old farts, we do not eat as much as when we were young. We had a significant hunk of beast left. Tonight I used some of the roast in a salad. Romain, radish, cucumber, cherry tomato, avocado, hard boiled egg, goat cheese, and thin sliced roast with a homemade dressing.

    What's Cooking?

Friday we used a store bought crust to make a bacon/cheese/asparagus quiche. Yesterday we went to Shell Knob's Harter House where I picked up a ribeye roast. I bagged it with spices and it spent 6 hours in the sous vide at 131. After that I put it in a 500 degree oven for 7 minutes to brown the crust. I served with Jacques Pepin potatoes and sautéed Brussels sprouts chiffonade with mushrooms. A nice Australian shiraz was the perfect match.

    Pickled Asparagus

googles search dilly beans. That will give you something worth eating.
  17. I am sure the Kigan guides are very good. I would bet the Duckett rod is wonderful, although I have not had it in my hands. No rod manufacturer I know of makes a rod with what I think would be a perfect combination. A spiral wrapped rod featuring Recoil titanium micro guides would be awesome. That is why I make my own.
  18. I have had the vinyl in both an Alumacraft and a Lund. In six years the Alumacraft never curled and peeled, nor did it suffer gouges. The Lund boat will be three years in the summer. Still looking brand new. No, the vinyl I have tested is not slick. On the other hand, I cannot vouch for vinyl in boats less well made.

    What's Cooking?

Tonight's stir fry - chicken with sesame noodles and veg. Same bug blocks posting a picture.
  20. The last 8 or 10 casting rods I have made have been spiral wrapped. Space your guides as you normally would, but with all guides (except the large stripper guide near the reel) taped to the underside. Put a bend in the rod as if loaded with a fish. Mark where the line touches the blank. That is the location of your bumper guide. Be sure you place it on the same side as your reel handle so you can lay the rod down. If you are using a single foot guide, definitely use the Forhan lock wrap. It helps prevent the guide from pulling out from under the wrap. Once you feel a how a spiral wrap feels on a larger fish, you will want all your other bait casting rods to be spiral wrapped.
  21. I went out, after carrying gas to the boat in the lift, around 9:00. Water temp was 54 - 55. Water visibility was 10 - 15". Brisk SW wind with intermittent sprinkles. I caught one dink bass on a Rockcrawler and had one hard strike that did not hook up. That is over a two hour period fishing known locations. In the next two hours I fished a Ned, again in known locations. For that effort I caught a green perch. I grew tired of the action and came in around 1:30.

    What's Cooking?

While I will admit to being over-served in the past, the odd post came about because I was typing while semi asleep. The good wife found me asleep in my chair, with my glasses still on, when she got up to get a drink of water at 1 AM.

    What's Cooking?

Smoked pork tenderloin, apricot mustard glaze, twice baked potato, and cucumber and onion salad with a tomato balsamic dressing.
  24. BTW, try the GPSStore
  25. I had a Garmin 7". I loved it until it died after 12 months. The warranty/repair process was a nightmare. Rather than argue and have a stroke, I bought another graph. Look at the Simrad 7 inch. Owned by the same corp as Lowrance and uses the same transducer as the Helix (really good, not structure scan). https://www.cabelas.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=2666259&type=product&WT.z_btnclk=YMAL-2666259&WT.z_pg_ref=prd2413529
