    It was during that discount that I bought the 6' blank I used to build my Top Dollar rod. (For those of you new to the board, I refer to my favorite top water bait. Look at my avatar.) Recoil micro guides, spiral wrapped. Minimal split grip. I put a Revo MGX on it. Sometimes I have to look down to see if I am holding anything.

    Nancy and I teach at Eureka Springs. Today was snow day 14. Tomorrow (already called off) is day 15. We made up 1 day with Martin Luther King, Jr. day. We made up another with a Saturday school last week end. We have 2 more Saturday schools planned, but that leaves us with 11 make up days - not counting what we may lose from here on out.

    Mitch, I am with you. I had two Curados eat their own gears. The second was the rebuild of the first. For that kind of money no one gets a third try. I now fish Lew's and high end Abu Garcia.

    Nancy and I are planning our first ever 4th of July party at school. Today is the 14th school day lost to snow so far this year. The remainder of the week is looking iffy.

    I have two 7'6" rods I built to drag bottom bouncers and troll cranks for walleye. I bought salt water blanks, medium power, moderate flex to use with 10# braid. I put a minimalist split grip on them and used para cord between the split. In addition I had a "pro" make a top water rod for me with a 6" MH blank and a fast flex for 10-17# line. I did not like the grip I chose and gave the rod as a gift. All three rods are superior as far as their blanks.

    Welcome Dan. I live at Holiday Island on the upper end. We moved here for the 2002-2003 school year and have not regretted a single day.

    I have built on St. Croix, Lamiglass, and Mudhole's MHX. St. Croix is tops for quality. The MHX is a tremendous blank for the price, just not quite as good as the St. Croix. They do offer more variety.

    I wrote of spiral wraps because it requires fewer guides to avoid the line contacting the blank under load. Quite honestly, I often wonder why the top line manufacturers don't produce them. Fewer guides and wrap means less expense and improved performance. I guess they fear no one will buy the "weird" things.

    Spiral wrapping micro guides results in fewer and smaller guides that weigh less and have smaller epoxy footprints. That means the balance point of the rod moves further back toward the reel. That means greater sensitivity. In addition, it means the rod blank is less distorted by the wraps which means a truer flex while casting. Anecdotal claims exist for greater distance and accuracy, but nothing has "proved" that yet.

    Yes. If you are careful, the result is incredible. However it requires patience, attention to detail, and refrigerator space.

    Hoglaw: One of the guide failures was on the jig rod you did for me. Not your fault because I supplied the guides. The other was on a walleye rod I tied. Both guides broke off right at the point the guide foot was covered by the epoxied thread. I think they bent back and forth too much going in and out of the rod tubes.

    I have used the Fuji Alconite guides on other rods. They are excellent as far as the ring portion. However on two different rods (both micro guide spiral wraps) I have had a guide break off at the wrap. Next time I build I may try a Batson.

    5bites: not looking to argue. Instead I want information. Whart is your objection? I have used a St. Croix blank tied with recoil micros in spiral fashion for over a year now. It is my topwater rod, and regular readers here know i fish topwater. So far, so great for me. What am I missing?

    I use the Recoil titanium micro guides, tied in a spiral wrap.

    I run a wide beam 16.5 foot boat. With the 75 my low end troll speed is 2.5 to 2.8 depending on the wind. For slower than that I slip the motor in and out of gear. Alternatively, I could throw out trolling socks.

    As you probably know, I do troll quite a bit. I run an Etec 75 on my tiller rig. This coming summer will be its fourth. Since it only requires service every 300 hours, I have had it serviced only once. (It is also quite a bit less expensive to service than a 4 stroke) As of last week, I have seen no change in speed or rpms to reach that speed since the day I bought it. It jumps up on plane the same now as its first day. I guess that makes my report "so far. so good."

    Last year February was the month for river walleye below Beaver dam. March was the month in the upper lake area.

    Mono/cofilament/fluoro - keep it col and keep it dark and the spool lasts forever. Braid - it loses color before it loses strength, but not by too much On the spool - change the last 90 feet very often. If you don't like splice knots, change the reel spool.

    Tracy Area Boats in/near Mountain Home did my Alumacraft. I ordered it through them and they set it up. Except for the MinnKota wireless 24 volt install they did a great job. I have an idea that F&F might enjoy. Pick a warmer day soon. Come ride in my tiller rig and in F&F's Tracker rig. Between the two of us you will find a number of ideas and be able to test two platforms that work. The point is not winning the comparison, but letting you see/touch/feel the range out there.

    QB. Try a jikka rig tube. Hangs less and easier to fish slow.

    I run an Alumacraft Navigator 165 tiller. 16' 8" V hull. I love it. I suggest you look at and ride in the Lund, Crestliner, Alumacraft, G3, and Xpress. All quality build boats with different price points and power options. Pick the one that suits you and your fishing style, and you will have a great boat at a much smaller price.
