  1. pharyngeal teeth of a common carp...if you ever find those in you'll know what they are now
  2. Thats amazing...Commons run larger on Avg it seems than other Lakes in the 4 state area, at least the ones I catch..., I wonder if zebras occur deeper because carp keeping them thinned down in the shallower areas? temps? fluctuating water levels?....be an interesting study subject.....I know in the great lakes they seem to occur very shallow there... The mouth on older bigger commons seem to get tougher as they get older..its noticeable..It never occurred to me the possibility that it could be from them eating the zebras... in the back of a commons throat are pharyngeal teeth they use to grind or a better term is crush items, seeds.. snails..grains...most any organics that wash into a water..Whole seeds and egg shells are left in baits for the "crunch factor" that the carp seem to prefer. The image of carp head down slurping in mud isn't what they do normally they cruse around like cows grazing in a pasture...all the little tid bits you find on the bottom in a back eddy of an ozark stream is an example..they hoover up an mouth full and some how decide what to blow out and what to push back and eat...one of the reasons they are hard to hook, until they commit to the food item.. Commons where considered almost uncatchable once they got old and wise...but Englishmen Len Middleton and Kevin Maddocks in 1980 credited with the tied hair rig did carp angling blossom, before that natural hairs... horse usually...was used to link the bait to the hook. This is why they called it a 'hair rig'. we use now use complex rigs so that you hook them on the 1st suck so to speak..stiff hinge rigs..chod rigs...d-rigs...KD rigs--zig rigs--all with the complexity a fly tier would appreciate...I have more types of hooks/rigs for carp than I ever did for all my other fishing.....one reason is such a big $ business in Europe... fishing for carp is more like setting a trap to catch an old wise coyote... than waiting for a catfish to eat stink bait...
  3. less competition make prices go up.....more completion makes prices fall.....I remember when a trip to bass pro had a diversity of products far more than we see today.......mom and pop lure companies like Jim Rogers out of lamar Missouri..are now a dieing breed, I hope those places survive...Big Jim Rogers hooked me and my old fishing buddy to the huge bluegills and red ears in a small lake he fished...he gave us some very heavy but small jigs tied with squirrel tail and had hot pink heads, think I still may have some....last time I knew his grand kids had a sporting goods place still in Lamar, but unsure if they make lures there anymore....I prob should go through and set back some of my old lures and original wood choppers made in Carthage......its a different world today..and I am not so sure we are better for it
  4. they take micro fishing serious over seas...from what I am told it will slay trout.....
  5. fish can be pretty tough, but not that tough... never used one.....had only one serous hook in my hand..But most of my fishing has been done with single hooks... if you goal is to avoid hooks, then there are ways to do so without damaging fish...we all have seen pics of rough fish handling..usally its through ignorance...but some its indifference..... some people are just scared of getting yucky on there hands..the towel trouters come to mind.....but then again its only roaring river....
  6. awesome...I find this interesting...I had no idea zebras where at those depths here...I know common carp and blue cats feed on them ..perhaps I need to fish a tad deeper than I do now....it seems in waters across the USA large carp/zebra mussel connection
  7. they are just twitchy about silvers getting in the lake.....imagine 60 foot yacht crusing the lake and getting wapped in the head with a silver carp..knock the wine glass right outa their hand! but baby silver carp look real close to a shad
  8. anywhere I fish that has red ears they get huge.....I'd bet 3# in lakes with zebras....they would do well in our lakes......but its hard to get the state to do anything but lmb...crappie....walleyes.....I think Stockton should have more management for SMB meshes with walleyes......yellow perch as well they are in BS and its only a matter of time till they are in TR and Beaver I have fished BS with good luck on big carp....I'd like to hit up Beaver some this spring..never fished it for carp...still working on my health..getting stronger every day....
  9. I wonder..and expect..high water events do several things..not the least of which keep harvest down...less people on the water = less fish on someones dinner plate....more biomatter in the water...usally that means more food for YOY be it shad, bluegills or bass...blue cats, common carp...red ear sunfish and drum all munch on those zebra mussels like to see the state stock red ears to that end...turn zebras into slab shell crackers would be a win win as a note..common carp spawn better on high water events...blue gills feed heavy on the eggs and larva..one of the best bio controls of commons is healthy bluegill populations..one of the factors I look for in a water that produces larger commons (over 20#) and places where commons don't recruit many YOY seem to produce slab gills..(providing they are not a primary angling target)
  10. lots depends WHAT you want to fish for...like white bass in springtime...or snagging spoonbill....or a huge carp or catfish.....as far as crappie...find a boat dock..some will charge you....some all you need to do is ask....I know more than a few that get a boat slip to crappie fish in..don't even keep a boat at the lake..hardest thing to do better on shore than in a boat is bass..but then you can wade the creeks for that ..so much water to fish and so little time!
  11. ever had beef someone "self processed"? nasty.......alot to it..buddy of mine knows how and deer he preps is as good as any meat.....so yeah....every eat spoonbill? great eating..if you know how...other wise PATOOWY
  12. Looks like we ended up....6th
  13. YEAH he was a twit..only MDC person I ever met who wasn't top drawer...but looks like he might have gotten weeded out.......the way I figured if he rights some tickets he can go play doing something other than his job..so he busts as many as he can as fast as he can..I suspect thats why he had a supervisor "ride along" the second time I saw him
  14. what a ripper!
  15. Had a guy from Warsaw go to a CAG fishing social and served buff ribs..was good..but I am lazy when it comes to cleaning any fish, like any fish on the big side they get nasty...If I was to keep a buff for the table, I'd gut and gill it and put it on ice....you would be amazed how crappie and walleye taste better that way.. but a warning a legal walleye becomes a barley short walleye once its on ice for a bit...an expensive ticket I got once..still mad about that...its was legal when it went in the ice....only violation I ever got..went from 1/2" over to 1/4" under...funny thing is a month later got checked again and the same CO...he had his supervisor with him that day, I told him this time I don't have any 1/4" under fish..his boss looked at him like WTF? and the CO said " I don't write tickets for 1/4" under"..I laughed and said yeah right.......I don't think he is a CO in our area any more! so put them on Ice with caution!
  16. if its no creel anyone with a cell phone becomes a CO just saying
  17. 1000 buck fine for theses guys
  18. game hogs be game hogs
  19. Ill also yatch slap the pee right outa of fishing buddies for a variety of reasons...not total strangers..the worst offense is peeing off the boat...if you gotta go tell me and we can find a bush on the bank, don't leave a scent trail where we are fishing to tell them we are here I agree....metal gigs, 20 foot poles..warm modern light weight cloths people are people...I typically vote conservative...yet I would have jail time for environmental violations
  20. here you go...weird but intimidating fish
  21. I think squeaky wheels get the grease, meat fishing is going out of style....many state fisheries mandate is to provide user groups with what they want..the groups that fish for the pan are getting smaller...the groups that C & R are getting bigger, fish like Muskies, small mouths, and trout come to mind,....personally if someone I was with, wanted or munch a 3lb smallie, I'll yatch slap they so hard they might pee out their nipples for a week....if you need food that bad..go to wally world and get a $1 pack of hot dogs..if you want diner on a float/camping trip..keep a rock bass or 3,..let those brown bass go, takes too long to grow one to use they only once
  22. This is why those Hungarian women are so fluffy!
  23. this is a proper carp store!
