I don't think a whole lot of folks catch big females up the river. I caught one that was big enough to let go last year, though I'll confess I already had 3 on a string, one of which was probably a female and was 24 inches probably. Most of the walleye I catch are when fishing clousers for white bass, and most of them seem to be about 17.5 inches. I keep hearing folks say the walleye are about done up the river, so maybe they're almost safe for this year. A week ago today I caught six or seven of them, only two of which were 18. They were all males I guess, and they were clearly in the mood. I do fish for them up the river because it's the only time I know how to catch any. I have a 20' trout boat with a jet. It's 56 inches wide so it's big enough to play on the lake a little, but I never take it on the main lake. It doesn't like waves or wind. About the only time I fish beaver anymore is up the rivers from March to may. This year I'll be lucky to get three trips, the second of which looks to be tomorrow.

water is high and off color. Temps are in the 65 range on the Wyman gauge.
-
There are some fish in the river. We caught a few but it wasn't a great day.

Don't think you need to worry about folks overrunning. The twin bridges area has been packed the last two days.
-
I think it's on beavorama road. Just look that up on Google Earth.

Go by Southtown sporting goods. They'll set you up. White rooster tails, rapalas, small jigs and swim baits will all catch them. Send me an email at Kyle.Unser@KutakRock.com and I will send you some Google Earth shots of where you can go.

Where on the white is the access you're talking about? There is no more pay access at walkers bluff as far as I know and I can't think of another place where it would be. I fully accept I may just not know about it, but as far as i know the only accesses (other than private stuff) from sequoyah down are: Sequoyah dam; Wyman bridge; Burned down house (closed); 45 bridge; Dollar hole (closed); Habberton road; Beavorama; 412 bridge ramp Between which of those does the one you're talking about fit?

Maybe fifty cent hole costs two dollars now? There used to be a private access at walkers bluff. About half way between 45 and neils. It was called "dollar hole" as long as I've been around here, which is only 17 years. The folks who owned it probably got tired of messing with the problems for a buck a head. My college roommate sunk his bronco in the river down there. I had to swim out of the window. We may have been part of the problem now that I think about it. I'm not aware of another pay access on upper beaver lake other than fifty cent by war eagle mill. Nothing in the goshen area. But dollar hole used to be a thing.

I'm sure it will clear up just in time for wake board season. I live on a creek that got shuffled around big time after the Christmas flood. My wading has been hurt quite a bit, but the gravel bar shifted to my side of the creek which is kind of cool. The fishing just isn't the same but the hanging out got a lot better. I was almost hoping for something apocalyptic to change it again, but I'm glad we dodged it. The whites should be in full swing and the walleyes should be post spawn up the river when this all clears up. Maybe I'll get to cut loose a day next week if the water is right.

Cabela's Water Proof Mid Active Trail Boots
hoglaw replied to Ham's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
I bought a pair of boots from Cabelas for general working in the yard/wading in the creek. They may have been Wolverines. Not quite certain. I am certain that I bought them from the bargain cave, and would have paid no more than $40 or so for them. Anyway, the soles came off of both of them and I wasn't happy about it. I took them up to the store and after an hour or so, they swapped them out for a pair of Danners that are just awesome. I'm sure there was a hefty price difference but I didn't pay anything out of pocket. Their customer service has been great to me. -
You can take out at Beavorama. Just a little farther down.

Thanks Lshack. I almost went on monday but did another trip instead. At least I'm not missing out! It has to be ready to jump off just any day now you would think. It's still early by most years standards but it just has to be close.

Ok, I'll bite. Haven't seen (or heard) any reports from folks fishing the run up the river. Not surprising that the walleye folks don't talk much, but normally word gets around when folks start catching the white bass up high. I was going to go try to walleye fish yesterday but got an invite to trout fish some private water so did that instead. I won't be able to get out more than once or twice this year, and with a 4 month old at home I doubt I'll be able to do any trips other than just taking the day off. I'll probably go in a week or two, but I figure someone is catching something up there by now.

So now I have to start collecting old appliances too?

You're right jerry. My fault. I looked it up. It was a red man all American tournament. Far cry from the classic. My ex father in law is a good friend of his and that's how I heard the story and he showed me the old vhs tape. On the tape Stephen said someone else put the washer there but apparently that wasn't the case.
-
That's funny al. Stephen browning won the classic when it was on the arkansas river years and years ago. Folks who have seen that footage know that he was catching big fish when he would bang his crank bait into a washing machine on a big flat. What very few people know is that he put the washing machine there.

I've never fished the run on the WE. I'm only aware of two places to get in - fifty cent hole up by the mill, and sidewalk hole where it's a lot more lake than river. Sidewalk requires a boat. Fifty cent hole is wadable. Just look on google earth. Someone has tagged a picture near the mill with "50 cent hole"

It's going to be a weird year for foot access. I haven't seen the water yet, but I assume it's backed up quite a ways (and at least one poster here has said that it's up 7 feet). That kills any current on the white in the bridge area, and you'll have to go a good ways upstream to find current. One option for you might be to get a canoe and put in at Wyman and float down to some productive shoals. Richland is always an option too, but I expect it will be crowded with folks trying to find fishable water. You can also float down Richland from the Tuttle Road bridge. It's going to take some homework and planning to get on good wading trips. There used to be a walk-in access on private land upstream from the bridge on the White. We always called it the "burned down house" access if anyone remembers that. But I've heard that person no longer allows folks to cross their land which is understandable. It's really going to be a jetboat year I think. Unfortunately due to work and family stuff, I'll be lucky to get one or two trips in. I'm sure there are lots of productive flies, but I've always used clousers. Mostly in the colors mentioned. Brown and purple has produced for me on cloudy days for whatever reason. I use a sink tip line, 7 wt (or I did before I broke mine on a fish last year), and a 10lb tapered mono leader (I think it's the "bonefish" one from McClellan's maybe). I agree on the FAST stripping. Some days they want that thing moving. Lots of days I'll run two clousers of different colors at the same time and just see if they prefer one to the other.

Funny. Dragging a ned was an easy thing for me because that's how we fished the little craws for white bass. Man we used to hammer them doing that. It was a lot of fun. I really don't fish the lake. I'll go up war eagle every now and then, but my boat doesn't touch beaver except for the spring runs. Last year I caught walleye on a flicker shad (casting), and on a keitech rigged on a stand up head. So you're telling me I can drag a ned for them too? If I can get lose in the next month I'll sure give it a shot. Total thread hijack. Do hybrids spawn? Will there still be a population if they don't stock them?

Interesting thread. This post takes me back though. My old roommate and I used to scoop the mud out of the ditch on the south side of the intramural fields. It would be loaded with inch long crawfish. 60 might get you through half of a good trip. Get a five gallon bucket, a shovel, or maybe a sturdy net and find a ditch with a bunch of those small ones in it. We weren't seeing them. We were scooping mud into the bucket and sort of panning them out of the mud if that makes sense. Once you get 100 or so, cover them with some mud andleaves and head to goshen. An old guy named vern taught us to do that. I always wonder what happened to him.

That was the name of my grade school. Lol.

I have caught a lot of trout on the lucky craft dd. I think it's an 85 size if there is such a thing. Not sure what model it is exactly, but I have a box full of them. An ito 110 has caught some fish, and the old Rapala husky jerk in rainbow trout which they don't make anymore. I haven't zeroed in on the magic ONE. I throw a few different sizes and depth seekers and see what gets action.

Phil Shuts Em Down When Conservatives Speak
hoglaw replied to Mitch f's topic in General Angling Discussion
How did this turd get revived anyway? It circled the drain a long time ago. Even the original poster has had to jump on and say "yeah, my fault" for creating it. This deal was done a long time ago. Why whoever brings stuff like this back from the dead feels that strong of a need to take their seat on the moral high ground I'll never know. Stop queering up my unread posts link please. I get maybe five minutes at work and another ten on the commode in the evening to look at this board, and I swear I leave better stuff behind half the time when I do. -
That sucks. I'd say a Yankee at that, but yall are talking about MO records Still, a really cool moment in the sun. I'd love to have a record anything, even if it's some obscure salt water line class deal. I saw a show once where they were all hyped up about breaking four or five igfa line class records in one trip. Kinda takes the cool off of it. Congratulations for holding a state species record as long as you did. That's an awesome story.

Don't even get me started on elderly animals that act like children. Getting choked up thinking about my dog right now. Someone sent me some facebook post about a dog's last day on earth before it had to be put down - the owner feeding him a big breakfast, taking him to his favorite park, etc. I wanted to kill that person. One of the toughest things I've ever read. I'm excited to see the movie. I think my wife and I may go on Saturday. Mom is coming up to watch the little one so we get a night out. She said she'd even see Star Wars if it meant we got to go out together. But I think this is one we can both enjoy. It's this one or "Joy" for me.
