Alaska Fish And Bear Porn From Last Summer

Box full of fresh silvers. We start expecting them to show up around the end of July Some of the kings that have been in the river for a while really start getting some color in them mid July The entrance of Yantarni Salmon Camp. All the tents have wood floors, beds with mattresses linens and duvets, electrical outlets and wood stoves. The camp has heated showers and flushing toilets. Not too shabby for being 100 miles from closest road. Late August and early Sept on the upper Naknek is a great time for the monsters of the monster bows. Again in the "Bear Free" zone Still more to come -

A rosy red King next to a bright and fresh chromer The Rapids on the Naknek River, time and time again, produces monster rainbows during the smolting action A fresh king on the Naknek. The kings start running about the 3rd week of June till the end of July. At Brooks Camp waiting for guests to get done with "Bear Etiquette" class in a "Bear Free" zone. This is at Yantarni Salmon Camp. It is located on the Pacific Coast side of the Aleutian Mountains. The salmon carving was done by me with a chainsaw on a whale jaw bone that I found on the beach. The jaw bone was over 12 feet long. Sept 1st is the start of waterfowl season in Alaska I spend a lot of time in the Rapids of the Naknek River from June through the end of August chasing big bows Want some more???? -
Better late than never! This first one is a little place we fly out to called 3 Creek in Becharof National Wildlife refuge A Naknek River Rainbow caught early season smolting These next few are of some Kings caught on the Naknek River late June through late July Back to 3 Creek for some lunch Another smolting rainbow on the Naknek in the Rapids area DeHaviland Beavers are the work horse of Alaska. Two of these were built in the early 50's and the other in the early 60's. more to come

I've taken notice to some of your pictures too Ronnie. You have the ability to capture some really great photos.

I seem to suffer through more picture posts from you than anyone else. You're about the only one that can really kick me when it hurts!

I was one of the lucky ones to be sent a few midges tied by Mic to be tested. I found them in the mail box on Sunday, worked late on Monday, wanted to test them on Taneycomo Tuesday after work, but they were running water, and finally got to try them today. First off, they are very well tied flies, and I personally like the size and looks of them. Very well proportioned and I've been wanting to tie some about this size for certain days when the fish are midging and looking for something small. Now for the report.... Got to the water about 5:15 pm. Sun was shining, wind blowing 10-15 straight down stream and the temp was 47 degrees. Started in the shallow water on the flats between outlet one and two using 6x tippet and one of the first of Mic's midges or mini soft hackles. Maybe I should call it a hair hackle? There was a good chop on the water and lots of surface activity with fish slurping midges off the surface. I fished the fly by quartering my cast down stream and using short 2 inch strips fairly fast for a retrieve. On the third cast, I got slammed by a nice 17 inch bow. 6 more casts, and I landed another 14 incher. 2 casts after that, a hit and a miss. 5 more casts and another hit and a miss. 7 or 8 more cast and I landed a 15 inch rainbow. After that, I did not land another fish and only got 2 or 3 more hits on the fly. I tried slowing the retrieve, moving to deeper water, and even just dead drifting it. I fished the midge for about 30 minutes and then went to one of my go to flies for a comparison on how the fish were biting. I switched over to the olive pine squirrel sculpin I like to fish. I caught fish or got bites on just about every cast that I did not foul up with wind knots for the next 30 minutes. This sounds pretty good, but I think every 3rd cast ended up being a huge wind knot with the fly tangled up and doubled back on the line. Big problem with tailing loops today????? All the fish caught on the pine squirrel were 10 to 13 inches. My interpretation on the results of the test......Mic's fly caught fish. Landed 3 in 30 minutes and missed 4 or 5 others. It did not catch as many as the pine squirrel in the same time allotment, but Mic's midge consistently caught larger, better quality fish than the pine squirrel. I will add this fly to my box for future fishing adventures. Ducky approves! It should be snowing in the Lake Taneycomo area tomorrow, but I plan on getting out and testing one more of the midges in the foul weather. Another report to come.

You fishing tomorrow? I am.

One of the largest bass I have ever caught was in the Spring at Busch Wildlife Conservation Area. 8 pounds 4 ounces, caught in early April on Lake 27, I think. That was back in 1988.

LOL! No, I have not had the pleasure of such an adventure yet. By the way, welcome to the forum. Thanks for posting a report.

After fishing one of your flies today, I want to see it also. I will post a report on the fly in a little bit.

Quick Fishing Report For Stockton 3/19/2013

Thanks for the report. Looks like I'll give it another week or two before heading up there looking for crappie. -
That had to be cool watching them net the spoonies. Do you know what they were doing with them? Tagging and releasing? Collecting eggs?
