  1. Do what I did - reel in a catfish and the muskie will attack it! Go early, or late. When I went very early (sunup), I would always see a muskie rolling or slashing the surface. Use big bass baits, or catch a few 10 inch shad (or large bluegill) and put them about 1 foot under a large bobber.
  2. so I visit the forum after being gone for a while and find the topic of trespassing in MO rivers and streams. I see that it has gone on for 5 quick pages, and I think 'no way is this just about the topic'. It's a beautiful saturday (though I'm stuck here at work waiting for some samples to arrive) - and y'all are debating illegal immigration on a fishin forum?? Well, while y'all were debating about a topic in which there is no good answer, I went fishing yesterday and caught a beautiful 10 inch brookie and several rainbows and smallmouth and one of the most beautiful streches of river I've ever seen. Y'all ought to be hitting the streams more
  3. That sounds a lot of fun - we were going to go to the beach last weekend, but got rained/colded out. Glad we had folks looking at our house - no offers yet however. We miss good neighbors, and talking about not having enough time to fish we're flying back to KC and Spfld tomorrow for the weekend to visit - but no time for white bass action. As far as pure fun goes, last year with a thunderstorm rolling in at blunk hole had to be some of the most fun fishing I've ever experienced. My MO fishing license has expired - how very sad, but I've got a NC drivers license now so I can get in-state fishing. Post a report if you get in on some early Fellows lake action. It has to be one of the best overlooked lakes (when you get there right at sunrise anyway). I'll never forget that muskie attacking my catfish... sigh... now I've got a full time job
  4. The start of the year - I've only been fishing once since - (trout). Found a job. I just wish I had figured out the white bass action earlier than I did - I only really got into it the last couple of years - and Blunk hole was about 25 min from my house!! I'm missing those fresh fried fish every night - Hope y'all tear em up! I love reading the reports (while I attempt to find some good fishing around here - I know it's out there!)
  5. I am MISSING the white/walleye run on the James this year - I used to get up at 3 am, go catch a bunch, come back to house and clean em, and go to work. What a way to start the day! I haven't been able to do much spot finding here in NC yet - and the quality of the lakes are nowhere near those of S.W. Missouri
  6. hope he's ok. Just offhand (because I have no idea), is there an advantage to building a nuclear power plant along the coast? You would think inland would be safer for an island like Japan - or does it have something to do with cooling? I'm somewhat versed in the actual molecular process, but not on powerplant design
  7. It is newsworthy, but it seems that the media is keen to run with a 'nuclear explosion' story. The bigger story is the loss of life in Japan - I feel for the people over there - can you imagine that happening along our coast? It's hard to prepare for an earthquake/tsunami.
  8. Here we go again... :D Glad they have been able to protect the reactor - though the plant probably is permanently shut down. Devil's Advocate reports from Wikipedia "Comparing the historical safety record of civilian nuclear energy with other forms of electrical generation, Ball, Roberts, and Simpson, the IAEA, and the Paul Scherrer Institute found in separate studies that during the period from 1970 to 1992, there were just 39 on-the-job deaths of nuclear power plant workers worldwide, while during the same time period, there were 6,400 on-the-job deaths of coal power plant workers, 1,200 on-the-job deaths of natural gas power plant workers and members of the general public caused by natural gas power plants, and 4,000 deaths of members of the general public caused by hydroelectric power plants.[11][12][13] In particular, coal power plants are estimated to kill 24,000 Americans per year, due to lung disease[14] as well as causing 40,000 heart attacks per year[15] in the United States. According to Scientific American, the average coal power plant emits more than 100 times as much radiation per year than a comparatively sized nuclear power plant in the form of toxic coal waste known as fly ash.[16]" Course, I'm no expert Energy is dangerous, it seems. Probably not a lot of data on clean alternative energy yet, though I'd imagine lower numbers, due to the incredibly low amount of energy they supply. Hopefully, they'll supply more in the future. 9. egad - gm triploid hogs - what would Sarah and the girls say?...
  10. Generally, PM if you are upset. You'll usually end up having a profitable exchange with a person more intelligent than yourself. At least, I've found that to be true. Trying to attack someone's politics is like trying to say that your pig is cleaner than your neighbors pig, and no one comes out looking better by it. The conservation board is tricky - and as such should be left entirely up to the moderators. We're just guests on this site. And also, hi from N. Carolina - the trout are excellent here as well. (will post pics here in a bit)
  11. I do miss it there - the fishing of the ozarks cannot be undervalued. There is no equivalent fishing forum for this area either. Tell your girls the dog is doing fine - spending some time with the 'grandparents' while we look for a more permanent home. I sure do miss getting up at 3 and coming home with supper before going to work though. I'll never forget some of those mornings at fellows lake or at james river. We've found one lake here so far, with great trout in it. But more exploring is needed. Hope y'all are doing good Brian
  12. When I lived in S. MO, I did real well on whites at fellows - really early (right before and through daybreak), from the spring into the summer. They chase balls of small shad, and go into a frenzy for a period of usually about 45 min. I fished the bridge area (from the bank), over the culvert. Bring a net and snag some shad, and drop them under a float about 3 foot under. I tried using two rods once, and couldn't keep up with the action. Fast and furious, but when it turns off, it's off. I even had a catfish on this method, which was promptly attacked by a large muskie. Go a little deeper and you'll find the crappie as well. and walleye - though only caught one keeper last year.
  13. Beautiful fish - your friend seems to be missing a tooth - that must have been some fight!
  14. Not exactly your answer, but I and another fellow I know have had good walleye success on Berkely Flicker Shads - weight above
  15. Kinda makes you wonder how many of these cats are shot and skinned w/out MDC ever knowing about it. Just another trophy for back-woods-billy.
  16. That sounds worth a read.
  17. I ONLY use the finest Chilean Yak hair, trimmed after weeks of scouting yak herds in the mountains. Or you can use maribou.
  18. Thanks all. Gonna miss the ozarks "fo sho". I'll post the occasional report when the fishing gets started (I'd probably better focus on work for a little while). Thanks for the link smthjoe - MSU grads can get jobs (though mine's in the lab - not the field), but there are jobs out there. It took a solid 4 months for something worthwhile to happen. As eric says - the scenery is amazing! I'm itching to get out there and poke around.
  19. well, it sure hasn't paralyzed his fingers - six posts so far today!
  20. Just accepted a job in Lenoir NC, in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains. I've done a moderate amount of research that suggests that there are populations of wild rainbow, brown and brook trout in the mountains. Anyone every fish this area? The rest of NC seems to be bass/catfish until you get to the coast. It's hard to leave one of the best fishing areas in the country (in terms of diversity of species, and quality), but I've always wanted to surf fish, so win some lose some. Any info would be greatly appreciated! And I'd also like to say thanks to all the folks on the forum who have helped my out around here with the fishing reports and advice. Hopefully I was able to recripricate in part.
  21. University of Arkansas wrestling team practice
  22. I'm a tad doltish, but also slightly boorish as well. All the same, I'll go in on the pledge. They are getting kind of old...
  23. but that's the point. What if I want to buy a car with an engine that doesn't pass emissions standards? What if I want to build a house that doesn't fit into government compliance for energy effeciency? What if I want to buy products that weren't produced according to the governments sustainability requirements? What if when I want to travel, I have to wait for a time when a bus will be filled to ensure maximum effeciency in mass transit? Not saying these are going to happen (except the first two already do). Gator's point is perfectly legitimate, although I do not share his level of fear. I know someone who was recruited by the FBI after the Patriot Act passed. He has told me things that scared me badly, and said he wasn't cleared to tell me the really scary stuff. It did a lot of good (in terms of keeping America safe), but it's good that it is done with.
  24. This I suppose is the reason there is debate - if one side was 100% right, it would be so apparent to everyone that no one would argue. Gator raises a good point - and an unavoidable one. If a sudden massive national/global response were to take place against gw/c/w (global warming/cooling/warming), we would by necessity loose many of our freedoms we enjoy (the freedom to purchase which cars we like, to build our houses how we want, to travel as we like, to buy the products that we want, ect...) We could go into a debate over whether that is a good or bad thing. When you have traveled throughout Europe as I have, you see that our American way of life is pure luxury, and it does tend to make one feel like a greedy consumer. However, the kind of individual freedom America has since seeded throughout the world has enabled many social advances that otherwise may not have happened. Would there still exist slavery if America hadn't been the first to eliminate it? Would other countries be having equal rights movements (think S. Africa)? Perhaps eventually, but the notion of freedom from complete government rule/authority from the U.S. has been a strong empetus. (sp?) So where is the answer? Well, an enlightened population and a free market is all that is needed. (as has been suggested already)
  25. Not right now I dont - things are tight - but there's always tomorrow. I'd love to go to Belize - I hear it's amazing snorkeling.
