  1. i have seen those guys before. And rumor has it that they infiltrated the security around the governor. They were reported to be hanging around the cement pond at rrsp. They may be attempting to blow the dam and release all them big fish into the creek.
  2. I let the weather forecast scare me out of coming to the opener. Corky said to me, I am not fishing in the rain, so I decided not to come as well. We had a little snow here early and the temp was 33. Glad you had a great trip. 12 lunkers in 2 days. I wanna know what color of bait you were using. I bet it was that glow in the dark green stuff. Let me know when you get closer to my neck of the woods. See ya
  3. Yeah that plan slipped through the cracks as did normal stockings in the river and even the park. Browns in the upper end would have had a lot of sanctuary water to grow big and ugly and with a mean attitude.
  4. Pete, it is already showing improvement just since this guy took over in august. Numbers and size are up. Lots of little fish that escaped, but not put in on purpose as before. Prior to this flood there were good numbers and good fish with a few lunkers thrown in. I think it will only get better with time.
  5. Fortunately that hideous pipe has not run enough water to make much difference there. It attracts more people than fish, which is a good thing. Keeps them out of good part.
  6. To answer your question about the stocking, they mostly stocked the river, with a brief stocking or two in zone one. Occasionally they would stock the creek with brood stock, but most big browns started out in the river and migrated into the park. Over the years several 10 to 18 lb brown trout were caught at bssp. John Goad caught the first really big one at 15lb, followed by Jeff Tiefenaur at 17 lb, and then Jack Bushacker at 18 lb. A handful of other from 14 to 16 were caught as well. The last big one that I caught at bssp was in 04 at 12.5 lb. 6 and 8 lbers were pretty common in the 80's and 90's. Hopefully we could see that again with new management.
  7. The answer is "yes" to there being several browns in the creek right now. Most, if not all, are small. By that I mean 6 to 10 inch with an occasional 12 incher brown trout. Keep in mind they are below the legal length limit for the majority that you will catch. They escaped from the rearing pools as did several par marked rainbows 3 to 6 inches long. As sure as I am telling you this, someone will start talking about all of the stream born, natural reproduction, watch out for the redds, and all that wild trout crap at bssp. Hope you catch some browns.
  8. I bought mine at 63 and still saved money. When I first asked about it, the store clerk said he knew everything about the lifetime permit and that it did not include the trout stamp. 2 years later i find out that it does include it. Oh well , its like I paid for it twice but I just got my wife one when she turned 60, so I will break even. Show up on opening day and your good to go. Just throw it in your trout vest, and you always have it with you.
  9. Joe must have been watching you when he said fly fishers cheat and put bait and spray on their hook.
  10. Your right Pete, we normally would not be there in the first of the really muddy water. Beer sounds like a great choice.
  11. When a scud or a sowbug or a sculpin swims in muddy water, he sounds exactly the same as he does in clear water. Sound draws the fish and silhouette draws the bite. Muddy water seems to bother the fisherman more than it bothers trout.
  12. For the first time in many many years, bssp has fished great during this winter season. Numbers and size of fish are up, and even a few bonus lunkers have returned to the creek. With the changing of the guard, it appears to be on its way back to the good ole days. Even prior to this latest flood, bennett was fishing excellent. Since the flood it has fished great. I know they lost some fish, but hopefully it won't affect the regular season in an adverse way. This new hatchery manager is making a great attempt to restore bennett to a great place to fish once again as in years past. Several of my buddies, Doug, Lewis, Gordy and Jeff, have caught good fish this season and I witnessed several nice fish being caught by several others anglers. Lewis caught his best ever, a nice 5.5 and Doug had 3 fish 3.5 to 5.0. I watched a guy catch one about 5 this afternoon. Many people I have talked to have had anywhere from 50 to 100 fish in a days fishing. In the past 10 years, I had just about given up on bennett ever being a quality place to fish again. During that time period, I would sometimes go to bssp just because it was close by for me. I would fish about 3 hours on a normal trip, and that would be about 2 hours too long. It is great to see it on the mend. I do not know his name, but "thanks" to the new hatchery guy. I once again look forward to fishing bennett.
  13. I say get rid of them non native trout and you will get rid of them dang ole fly fishermen.
  14. Its a deal Fs, we'll go dutch. Somewhere on oaf there is a podcast that was done by a sports caster out of springfield. I know his name but am a loss for it right now. Phil may still have access to the podcast. I was indeed fortunate to catch this fish: as Pete says, "catch of a lifetime".
  15. Keep trying on the picture. I have seen this fish, it is huge.
  16. Hello Brian. It is the former state record from 2005 to 2009, but is still the current line class, fly rod, world record. The current state record is held by Scott S. from Arnold Mo. His fish was a tremendous 28lb 13 oz brown, also caught from lake taneycomo near cooper creek as I recall.
  17. 38.5 inch brown trout caught at lake taneycomo just west of the rebar hole. 4.5 lb white river tippet, on a 5 wt sage xp.
  18. Wading will be more like bank fishing. The steps at #2 and possibly some water up in the weeds in and around #3. I was there today with the level at 708. Looks like a trend for a few days. Outlet #1, as we know it, no longer exists. It is filled in with sand and very little flow. I caught 2 bluegill and saw no trout. Very few fish anywhere today. Brown boulevard was void of fish. 3 3
  19. Yep, your dad fished that river more than anyone else I know. Most people never bothered to fish above like he did and especially around the ramp. i think floods have changed that area over the past few years. I can recall Jim and I catching some nice browns and rainbows up by the old KOA in the 80's. Tell your dad I said hi.
  20. Jim McGowin and I caught some crappie just below the wooden bridge in march years back. Back when you could still use modified flies in zone 3. We caught several and could see several more holding in one spot off the high bank.
