Just got this info in an email from the ODFW - If you're interested you can go to their website and sign up to receive upland bird updates via email. I've been thinking about heading over to western OK one of these years and hunting the WMA's. They're a bit high on the non-res small game license, $155 or so which is one reason why I've never done it. Quail research ongoing as data continues to mount Biologists continue to evaluate northern bobwhite quail on western Oklahoma wildlife management areas. The tools and technology being used by biologists is allowing for up-to-date research and tracking opportunities. Each report from research being conducted on western Oklahoma WMAs adds to a growing database of information that researchers hope will bring about increased insight into the movements and mortality of quail across their home range. According to the January report of the Oklahoma Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, researchers on the Beaver WMA have 56 birds "on the air," or birds that are being tracked via telemetry. Of those birds, 31 are bobwhites and 25 are scaled quail. During late December and early January, 31 losses were recorded. Of those, 11 were due to mammalian predation; nine were unknown; six were due to avian predation; four were due to collar failure; and one bird was harvested. Weather may potentially impact quail at Beaver WMA, since about 12 inches of snow has been on the ground since the end of January. To date, researchers have collected over 100 wings from harvested birds via the wing collection boxes, suggesting that hunter effort and success increased compared to last year. Radio-tracking of birds continues. On Packsaddle WMA, researchers are currently tracking 52 bobwhite quail. During January, 18 radio-collared bobwhites were lost. Of those, eight were attributed to raptor predation; two to mammalian predation; three to unknown predation; three to either unknown predation or collar failure; and two to harvest. Thirty-three wings were collected from harvested bobwhites. Of those, 15 were juvenile males, two were adult males, 14 were juvenile females, and two were adult females. Radio-tracking for the purpose of monitoring bobwhite movement is ongoing. Genetics research continues on Packsaddle WMA Lab analysis of northern bobwhite samples has been completed, and researchers are currently waiting for some scaled quail samples to arrive. They anticipate that the scaled quail primers will be developed within the month and that analysis of those samples will follow. A paper titled "Extra-pair paternity, intra-specific nest parasitism, and brood amalgamation in northern bobwhite" was presented at the Joint Annual Meeting of Oklahoma Chapters of The Wildlife Society and Society for Range Management in January.

I caught 3 bass fishing a tube Sunday. Tough fishing right now. I did talk to a guy that was fishing jigs in deep trees and he claimed he had caught a half dozen or so.

I've fished with Ham, we had an OA fishing get together in December, I think he put 75 or so in the boat each day in the 2 day trip. If he says he caught 100, he caught 100. I've never fished those Zig Jigs myself until that day, and I caught a little north of 50 trout. (No clicker so it's not an exact count). The other guys that were fishing with us did as well or better. We plan on doing it next year again, you'll have to go with us Joe, we'll show you how it's done.

Yeah I think Ollie is right. I think the Discovery channel was up interviewing people a while back, kind of like a casting call. I bet old Crowbar is making some bucks off this show, should it prove to be popular like Duck Dynasty, he'll be a rich man (if he isn't already).

Yeah no way I'd throw an A-rig with BBZ's, unless there's not tree within a 100 yards. Even then you have to front the coin to pick up 5 of those suckers.

The 33% annual mortality was interesting also. 11% due to being harvested. So roughly 22% of the LM's die every year to other causes than harvest. I believe these fish were mostly keeper sized, just doing some rough conversions from metric to inches.

I'm no expert on birds by any means, so I did a search on White Pelicans - apparently they migrate through this area.

While motoring up the White river channel yesterday morning, saw a flock of White Pelicans near Eagle Rock. First time I've seen them on TR.

I waded through about half of the PDF document. They did this survey on the Kings river. Their reasoning was that the Kings had less boat traffic and less angler pressure compared to the rest of the lake. I don't know if I agree with the part about less angler pressure, it always seems to me that there are more boats in the Kings relative to the rest of the lake, but maybe I am wrong. I wish they had used a section of the lake that is more comparable to the overall lake rather than the Kings. Boat docks are the preferred habitat over natural structures or placed habitat structures. By a ration of 1.5 to 4 times.

I'm grabbin' my straw hat and one-suspender bib overalls and heading to Hardy to see if I can get me a part in that series. Pays more than running shine from what I hear.

Well let's hope. They've got a bad habit of choking in key games. They could've beaten Mizzou, they could've beaten FL in Fayetteville. They're vey frustrating to watch.

I'm thinking carp also, I've snagged one or two in the past on a JB. I've caught a couple that have had the JB in their mouths, very disappointing when you think you've got the 9 lb. bass on and it turns out to be Ol' Buglemouth.
