  1. Chuck Tryon has one in his book, starting on page 71, Fly Fishing For Trout in MO. Local shops around Bennett and Reed's Cabin at Montauk usually post what's hatching also. The hatch charts are usually just a guide. Water temp, weather conditions, air temp., and water conditions all effect the daily hatch of streams. Pack flies matching what might be out at the specific time of year and read the water when you get there to choose what to fish is usually the best rule of thumb.
  2. Being forced to take life less seriously is just another freedom lost..... The end result was suicide. Of course you could look at it as funny. He has some other notable quotes.
  3. The improvements to Duck Creek have been for water control and capture for the most part. Cleaning out ditches, cutting tree, replacing water control gates. Basically it is a big treeless mud pit now. I was not aware of any improvements to the campground, it still looked the same about a month ago. At that time, pool 1 was drawn down the lowest I have witnessed it in the past 30 years, which will have an effect on fishing for the next few years. The drought this year resulted in a lack of water to flood the area during waterfowl season. The only part that had any hunting water was the upper north west fields. Pool 8 and the lower area east and south of pool 1 were dry all season.
  4. Council Bluff would be nice, good camping spots and good water for self powered craft since it is a 10 hp limit on the big boats. Enough arm has a pit toilet and a nice gathering place with a ramp. Duck Creek does not have much in the way of camping unless you have a mosquito net and a snake charmer. Sam A Baker State Park and the St Francois River would be another nice option. Eleven Point River would be another option to make it more centrally located to the Spfd. guys.
  5. That's not an otter, it is the back of a little girls head with pigtails.
  6. Phil, is this a trick question? It depends on the last time you logged in as to how many you see.
  7. I was jolted to life last night about 1 am when the NOAA weather station belched out a tornado warning with a path about 3 miles north of us as the crow flies. Stepped outside and watched the show. Nice light show put on by the lightening just to the north of us. Neighbor bugged out with his kids and wife in jammies and pillows in a mini van as I watched. My kid and stepkid both calling to report sirens going off in town, wishing me well out in the sticks. Storm front hit about 1:45 with a roaring wind. Tucked back inside and watched it from the kitchen window. Trees bowed pretty good and we sustained a good inline wind followed by a nice pouring rain. Skyline had a nice backlight from the lightening show and cloud layers were clearly visible, no funnels. Wind subsided and I retired back to bed with over 1 hour less of sleep to face a Monday. Today, around 9, we had a drizzling rain. I noticed when I put the wipers on, a muddy water formed on the sides where the rain gathered from the wipers. Seems like the rain had alot of dirt and sediment mixed into it, probably something gathered up in the front as it came thru and precipitated out as muddy rain. Talked to a friend about 1 hour NW of me and he reported the same muddy discharge over cars in his area too. It looked like my truck had spent a day on a dusty gravel road and a small sprinkle had spotted it up. Yet, when I parked it this morning, it had been scoured clean by the torrential downfall last night.
  8. That fault has been popping for a while now. Some think it may be because of the Gas Fracting in that area. I did not feel it here, we were dealing with a tornado watch last night. Recent Quakes
  9. Ran across that on F&S online last night and could not resist it.
  10. We have gotten a few inches of rain here, may dampen the Sat. yak float on the St. Francois we had planned. It surely changed my plans on tilling the main garden spots this weekend.
  11. Sorry, no cats were killed that time, it was removed with a live trap. It found a new mousing location in a farm far away.
  12. Looks like a rough bunch.
  13. No, never really cared for blueberries much. They should do alright, most make a little tree after a few years.
  14. Took advantage of the nice weekend and started off the 2011 Garden Season. Took some old crating lumber and glass screen door panels to make a raised bed/hot box to jump start a early salad. Filled it with topsoil and compost, seeded it with lettuce and radishes and waiting for it to grow. The glass really raises the temperature in the box, even a few degrees on a cloudy day. I also made a new strawberry bed, the old one has been used by a stray cat all winter as a litter box. I am gonna miss that cat, yea right, he is in a better place. I could not stand the thought of picking strawberries out of a crap patch, so I made a new one and transplanted some of the plants from around the edge of the old one. First night, seems like there may be another stray cat as I found some fresh diggings and a plant dug up. I covered this one with wire to eliminate the problem till I can take care of the new problem. Trimmed trees, cleaned off the main garden and other patches. About another month and it will be full steam ahead for a full garden.
  15. A great fly tyer has gone on to better fishing. Uncle Dickie passed away on Feb. 18. Author of many great fly tying masterpieces, his style and his patterns will live on for a long time. I never met the man, I have only known him thru many books and videos thru the years. I always frequented his website in past years, he posted several patterns and good ideas. He was an icon in the tying industry. Dick Talleur Website.
  16. Went by the shop tonite after work and looked at the LC9 for the first time. I actually prefer the Kel Tec PF9 grip, it seemed to fit my hand better. Otherwise, little difference in the two except for the rounding, safety, and the loaded chamber indicator of the Ruger. We had a used PF9 beside it for $299 and the LC9 is priced at $499. Have you got to shoot the LC9 yet?
  17. Because all of the bass fall under the Black Bass Rule and season. Just different regs for each type. I agree they should not close a season on the spotted bass, maybe someone should bring this up. They need to change the reg. 3 CSR 10-6.505 Black Bass PURPOSE: This rule establishes seasons, methods, and limits for taking black bass. (1) Daily Limit: Six (6) in the aggregate, including smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, spotted bass, and all black bass hybrids, except: © On the Meramec, Big, and Bourbeuse rivers and their tributaries, the daily and possession limit for black bass is twelve (12) in the aggregate and may include no more than six (6) largemouth bass and smallmouth bass in the aggregate, except that the daily limit may include no more than one (1) smallmouth bass on the Big River from Leadwood Access to its confluence with the Meramec River, the Meramec River from Scotts Ford to the railroad crossing at Bird’s Nest, and Mineral Fork from the Highway F bridge (Washington County) to its confluence with the Big River. (4) Length Limits. (A) Streams: All black bass less than twelve inches (12") in total length must be returned to the water unharmed immediately after being caught from the unimpounded portion of any stream, including Pools 20–26 on the Mississippi River, except as follows: 1. On the Meramec, Big, and Bourbeuse rivers and their tributaries, there is no length limit on spotted (Kentucky) bass.
  18. How do you "like to fish" or "which method do you fish most often"? I like to fish dry flies upstream every chance I catch a rise or a situation that warrants the fly. For the majority of the time, it is nymphing under an indicator. Then there is streamers or wet flies. I always enjoy the strike on the top the most.
  19. I still think he was tossing an extra fish... Cabin Fever?? It was 66 here today. I planted some garden yesterday and worked in the yard all day today.
  20. Did you look for the rest of him? May have been eaten by Mountain Lions..
  21. Clinton closed down several in the 90's, Mammoth Spring Cool Water Hatchery was one. It has been revived, but not to its former self. It was raising smallies and stripers. I think they are involved in Mollusks, Hellbenders, and turtles now.
  22. It is illegal to "chum" for trout in the trout parks, I assume it is the same for the streams.
  23. Here locally, olive nymphs, primrose and pearl, brown bead heads, and crystal streamers have produced well. There have been warm days that produced a rise and a CDC Hares Ear did the trick.
  24. What kind of idiot runs into to another boat? And who took that pic, could they have warned that guy?
  25. Not trying to start an argument about MDC, just trying to figure out if 5% salt solution will be sufficient to kill Rock Snot. I thought they suggest bleach. I was surprised to see them. I noticed signs at all accesses on the Spring River Friday regarding the proper care of waders.
