  1. Midway USA reloading is a great place for supplies. Dunns carries some great reloading equipment as well as Cabelas and BASS Pro to some extent. Component pricing has been increasing the last few years and there have been shortages in some material due to war and hoarding for the coming 4 years of a Liberal Democrat leadership. What are you wanting to load for? Handguns or Rifles? MIDWAY USA LINK
  2. A book is good but someone that can teach you is invaluable. I learned from my uncle when I was a kid. It is definitely a method and procedure type of hobby. To insure quality and safe ammo, you have to go thru alot of steps. Once you get setup with all of the necessities, you can make custom ammo that far exceeds the factory stuff. Like fly tying, there are different levels of reloading. Mass production, precision ammo, or just plinking, you can make it suit your needs. It is a fun hobby.
  3. It is catch and release till Feb 1, then catch and take out. I usually take kids in Feb and have a little fun with the power bait. It is a pure mudhole of nasty green water. Visibility is less than zero. Probably 12 ft deep or deeper in most places.
  4. I fished the local lake tonight after work here in Jackson, Mo. I tried several patterns, woolies, bead head woolies, bead head nymphs. The water is nasty and green and a pretty stiff wind was blowing. Several fish turned and broke the top of the water. I did not even get a bite. Of course, with the time change, I only was able to fish for 45 minutes. I have done this now about 6 times and have never had more than 3 fish in a trip in the past few years. What does everyone else do at the other lakes to get them to bite? I guess I could go to the spinning gear.
  5. Just had to ramble on to see my post counter hit 1000 tonight. I am not going to watch any news till in the morning so I can get at least one good night's sleep before the next 4 years, 79 days pass........
  6. They have stocked the lake here in Jackson, Mo. Fishing has been pretty good. I am going to hit it in the afternoon tomorrow if the wind is not kicking up too hi.
  7. Leaves are fun when fishing for trout, use a terrestrial or caddis, target a leaf and then "hop" it off for a natural presentation. This time of year, alot of trout are looking up for a meal. Hoppers, beetles, ants, and big caddis are meals to fatten up with for the winter.
  8. Last spring while I sit thru the Hunters Education Program with my 12 year old daughter so we can hunt together, the Agent hosting one part of the show got off on Landowners. Seems like the county of his jurisdiction had over 1200 landowner permits that he could not verify that the permitee was listed on any deeds for any land in the county that was applied for. 1200 x $17 = $20,400 in one county. It was obviously happening state wide and may have been getting worse with the telecheck system. I kinda figured that something was coming down the pipes back then. The original system required a landowner to apply from a form mailed in each summer and I think had to be completed by August. As a farmer, based on amount of land owned, we would get x amount of bonus any-deer tags to thin the herd. There was even a tag for crop damage that a landowner could distribute to any hunter to add to his quota. Then everything went to the computer system, you walk in to the local permit vendor, tell them you are a landowner, and the machine spit out your tags. There was no accountability. I am sure the system was abused. Part of the new system is a registry again where landowners will have to provide proof of ownership of the land they are applying for. I don't feel that there is any problem with that. The amount of land should be dropped. Current system of 5 acres has been abused, and it may have been compounded by the telecheck system. This same agent loves the telecheck system, claims he has busted many buying a tag and telechecking an animal in the parking lot of the place where they buy the tag. Personally, I like it, I can kill a deer, call it in, and have it dressed out and in the fridge within and hour from the time I kill it. Combined with the warmer seasons the last few years, I have better quality meat. Better than dragging it into the nearest check station 20 miles away then back. MDC has had a tough year like all other entities that rely on a budget. Nobody could have figured in the increases in Fuel, Material, Energy, and other factors that have went up this year. Sales tax revenues are down all over because personal spending has been down. They have had a cut in pay this year on top of all the cost increases. I am with Al, don't bash them unless you think out the facts and see why they are doing things. They are here to help us with the things we all enjoy.
  9. I propose a Constitutional Amendment limiting campaigning for all public offices to the month before the Primary Election thru the General Election. Nothing more. I hope everyone made it out to vote today. Its all over here in 20 minutes!
  10. I have had problems for over 10 years out here now. Covenants of the subdivision require animals to be fenced, chained, or penned. Only in the last few weeks has there been a little animal control around here. I am still having problems with a neighbor 2 lots down that lets their weiner and jack russell roam. I have found that they like dead carcasses and they will roll in them if they find them. All summer I have kept a dead coon, possum, or fish cleanings out at the back of my lot. When they are ripe, I have noticed that they don't let the dogs roam. After a few weeks and the stink wears off, they let them out again. Cool weather does not make the duck carcasses stink as bad as the others in the summer. I really need a dead pig or cow! I have thought about a paintball gun, mark the little bastards so they will know they could have met another fate.
  11. I have seen them locally at Sam's and farm stores like Buchheits. You can search from their website to find a local dealer near you here> Coleman .
  12. I need some help with the new project that has come about this weekend. I was given a Heddon #8 9' Bamboo. The rod has a slight set, one guide taped on, one tip has oddball tip guide, all wraps need replaced, all guides need replaced due to rust. Any suggestions. I want to do it myself, just not sure where to order guide sets for bamboo. Everything else will stay original, would like to find the original thread but will probably modernize it also. I will probably refinish rod when finished. Reel seat original Bakelite and in decent shape. Grip is good, needs cleaning. Has original tube, sock, both tips.
  13. Do you shoot in B&W mode or edit it with Photoshop? I usually just let Photoshop remove color and it works well.

    Ducks?

Got out today for the season opener, hunted a private lake. Had several bunches of ducks work the lake, ended up with 2 ringnecks. Had a nice bunch of greenheads land on the lake as we were leaving after noon. Birds are moving. The woods were on fire today, peak fall colors.
  15. I have a feeling you may be close to being on your own. Not much help with a Mac. Some of my first experiences with PC's was with Apple IIc. If it helps, the original Windows was stolen from Apple GUI so you should find some similarities. Best bet is to Google the problem on the net and see if you can find a solution.
  16. The MP5 was property of the Police Dept his son in law worked for, he brought it home to show it off. The rub came when I called his boss, an old HS friend of mine and told him to sit down and have a little talk with him. I asked his boss not to get him in trouble, just inform him a little better about guns. Last thing I wanted was another out of work deadbeat like his father in law on the other side of me. He was a city kid, his first gun was his issue weapon and did not know any better. Dog owner had even less knowledge of firearms, ballistics, bullet travel. Like I said, his thoughts on the bullets were that they were not traveling past his property line. Main thing is, responsible pet owners take care of their pets. I felt bad for his grandkids coming home to see a pet dead. I was afraid they would go into the house before Grandparents came home and I was going intercept them if they beat them home. The son in law is actually a decent guy and a pretty good cop now.
  17. I did not get to finish the job, it died slow and painful I am sure. I doubt if they really noticed a mess in the house, since all 4 of the dogs run down to the "pond" and play in the mud each time they come out of the house to poop. The best part was the yelping coming from inside the house after it was shot. The shooter was afraid he had missed. I assured him there was something ailing the dog. When the owner verified that there was a hole all the way thru and intestines coming out, I knew he was a goner. I did not see any new digging in his back yard, he probably just thru him in the trash. People should be more responsible with their pets. I have shot many dogs on our farm, running stock, running deer, or just simply abandoned by the owner. Its a shame, but a fact of life.

    Test

I whip out a one liner on here and look at the response it gets. I post a valid fishing report on the Current River that takes 30 to 45 minutes on dialup and hardly anyone notices. Looks like test was a spammer or got scared off by our humor! Has anyone watched Testees on FX? I liked the promo with the guy and the penis enlargement spray. When things got hot, he passed out! Hulu web, Testees Pilot.
  19. Great Smallie. That area fishes good if you have a jet boat and can run upstream. This time of year the floaters are gone and you can do some serious fishing. I have run that section of the river to above Blue Springs and caught several nice fish. Walleye, Smallmouth, Google Eye and others are good to fish for in this area. A canoe float from above back into Van Buren would have been very productive.
  20. How about contacting McCain/Palin for some advertising? I know they can't afford a live TV broadcast on all major networks and Black Entertainment Television, but they should be good for this website.
  21. My next door neighbor "had" this mini weiner dog. This is the neighbor everyone dreads to have move next door to you. Moved out to the country because he was tired of all the ordinances in the city. He bought the place on the other side of me for his daughter when it came up for sale. He has always had 4 dogs from rotweilers to weiner dogs. All untrained and in everyones yards and trash. The first thing he did to upset the balance of the neighborhood was to dig a 20'x30' "pond" in the back yard of his one acre lot. This lead to lots of mosquitos, the trophy one being the one I found this summer that was larger than a dime. Next, son in law brought home a fully auto H&K MP5 to shoot. I came home and they were shooting at a milk jug, full auto, from one side of the pond to the other. They used my yard, a neighbors yard, and a neighbors shop as a backstop. They could not figure out why I would call the law when I asked them to stop and they didn't. He thought he had Elmer Fudd bullets that stop in mid air and drop to the ground when they reach the end of his property. He retaliated by trimming my row of pines I had the forethought to plant at each edge of the property line clean off to the trunk on his side. On with the weiner dog. Last year, he got the mini weiner dog when his older weiner dog was run over. Seems like he has to keep a minimum of 4 dogs running in and out of his house at all times. This thing was all over the place and would run up and bite you if it got a chance. It was not afraid of sticks, hoes, guns, or rocks. He tugged my pants a few times, bit my girlfriend, and generally made a pest out of himself. I caught him in a live trap I set for coons getting in the trash twice this summer. First time, girlfriend would not let me "take care" of him. Second time, too many of his family and him were out for me to take care of the problem. Finally, the dog bit the neighbor on the other side's daughter. He called the sheriff, filed a complaint, and informed him that he would shoot the dog if it came back in his yard. The sheriff deputy informed him that he had the right to protect himself from what was now a known biting dog. Last Sunday, I decided to do yard work instead of fishing. I mowed and mulched leaves and started trimming trees. One thing lead to another and I ended up with 20 piles of limbs to clean up. I was sharpening the chain saw when 2 shots rang out and a dog started yelping the yelp of major pain. I walked over to my tree line and spotted the guy that had the dog bite. I asked "Did you shoot"? Yes! "Do any good"? Yes!!! Seems like the shot from his 38 was a little off and he gutshot the dog. It made it back thru the doggy door and was yelping in the house. Owners were still at church. This was getting to good to miss. About an hour later, they came home from church. I was carrying the limbs down the hill to a pile and he caught me at the top. We talked about trees and I informed him that his pit bull lab mix had come across the yard after my daughter on Friday. I informed him that it will be shoot on sight if I see him do it again. Then his wifey starts hollaring inside the house and I knew the show was on. Next trip up the hill, here comes neighbor back over. "Have you heard any shots today"? I replied that I had heard shots all day and about that time there was one in the distance. Then he said they found the dog gutshot, bleeding out, in the house. I started to offer my services to "finish the job" when the shooter started down the road to my property. The show was on. The owner of the dog started cussing and threatening the shooter as he came down the road to my yard. Shooter came into my yard and asked if I had problems with their dogs, which I replied that I had already discussed it with the owner after church. I tried to diffuse the situation some as the owner was getting out of hand and his grandkid was standing with him. I was informed that the grandkid had heard it before. When the owner threatened the shooter, his kids, his wife, and his dog I broke it up in my yard. Owner threatened to shoot any of them if he caught them in his yard. The law was on the way but it took 30 minutes. All said and done, shooter was in the right. Dog owner received a summons to appear in court for charges of Animal Neglict. Seems like you can't let dogs run free in this county. It is the responsibility of the pet owner to control the animal or it is a class b misdameanor with a $500 fine, All has been pretty quite in the ole neighborhood. I was told that the pit bull lab grabbed another dog thru a woven wire fence last week. I have not seen it since.. Better than Jerry Springer!

    Ducks?

Our season opens Sat. Ducks are down, big migration 2 weeks ago with that big front. I saw snows and ducks flying south on that one. Many ponds and lakes around here have ducks on them.
  24. Man, what a great weekend. I left out early Saturday morning for the upper Current River on my annual late October trip. For the last 20 years I have made a trip to the upper Current River the last weekend of October. For several years, it was the way I spent Halloween, lately since my daughter and current job, it has been sometime in the last week of October. The air was cool and crisp and some areas received the first frost of the season. By the time I reached Fredricktown, there was patchy frost in the lower valleys. I took my time and hit several gun shops along the way, not in a hurry for anything, I had all weekend. Between Boss and Bixby on Hwy 32 I saw a Bald Eagle in a dead snag next to the road, his white head and yellow beak shining in the morning sun. I reached Montauk around 12:30 and bought the tag. Started in the upper fly area and worked my way down. First thing I noticed that the Fly Area was packed with people. I fished around them for a while till I found a pod of fish in a quiet area. There was a high bank on the other side so I figured I could fish them for a while in peace. They were looking up and I took advantage of it. I started force feeding them some hares ear caddis, foam ants, and foam beetles. Nothing like a trout on a dry fly. I landed 4 or 5 till some kid decided he would slide down the bank to check the water. This turned the fish off for a while along with the fact that a herd of spinfishers stomped thru the hole behind me. I caught several fish that afternoon throughout the fly area on dries and the primrose and pearl. Then it was off to Licking to spend the night in the motel. Sunday morning dawned spectacular, not as cold as the one before. I headed off to the river in an undisclosed location. On arrival, there was only 1 other car and 3 flyfishers prepping for fishing. I hit a trail and come out down river a 1/2 mile or so and started fishing. I hooked up with one on a beadhead right off the bat. I fished for a while, not doing great, but hitting a few every now and then. I was really expecting more, but the ones I came across were very shy and not feeding very aggressively. I worked my way back upstream and come across 2 of the guys in the lot. One was fighting a very big fish so I stuck around and watched. I took a pic of him with his fish and emailed it to them as they did not have a camera. It was a nice breeder brown, male, about 28 to 30 inches. I emailed him today and they said they caught one bigger later in the day. Walking out I caught a few more, nothing big. I left out around noon and there was still no other cars in the area. The wind had started to pick up and leaves were coming down. I have a pic showing a big redd on one of the shoals that held 6 nice brownies, they did not show up well. It is that time of the year, watch out and leave them alone. I don't recommend targeting spawning fish, let them do their thing and hook them later. I even come across a 3 lb brown on a bed in the middle of the park at Montauk. I left the river and went back to the park assuming most would be gone like they normally do at noon on Sunday. Wrong! Fly area was packed but the rest of the river was empty. I fished thru the campground without any company. Pleasant drive home with a nice tailwind and beautiful fall colors.
  25. Joel, I assume the troops are still in need of some "supplies". Any suggestions on what they need and maybe we can start sending them over some Christmas Packages. I know the address is on the website where to send stuff to but you may want to post it on here also. Thanks for the update. Looks like they still have a few more years, but the end is in sight.
