  1. Is Lane Spring completely closed as in gated off or is the water and restrooms just shut off and locked up? Used to you could stay there, just no facilities. Montauk is not far, don't know where you are coming from. Licking has a nice, cheap motel at the 4 way for about $40 a night. Then there is Rolla.
  2. From the amount of use, you will probably want to go with a midrange pair of Goretex waders. I have a pair of Orvis Silver Labels I bought in 2000 that I have used to fish, kayak, and duck hunt. They have been drug thru brush, over the edges of boats and duck blinds, busted ice, and kneeled in gravel and have not been patched. They get worn an average of 40 times per year. I have a pair of Hodgeman Breathables, not goretex, their own version, that are leaking after about 20 uses while duck hunting. I have a heavier pair of Orvis Goretex waders, the Pro Guide series I use in the winter, I have worn them probably 50 times over the past 3 seasons including a week in Alaska where they got more use than the jeans I wore. They are still in fine shape. Goretex is lightweight, packs down easy for travel, lets sweat escape, and keeps you cooler/warmer in the summer/winter. You can layer thermals or fleece under them to suit the water temp you are going to be wading in. You can roll them down and use them as waist high waders in shallow water. When the goretex stockingfoot waders get dirty, put them in the washer on the gentle cycle and was them. Stockingfoot waders let you choose the boot needed for the type of water you are wading. I have a cleated sole for hunting and wading mud, felt soles or felt soles with studs for rocks. The chest waders with a belt actually trap air and give you some floatation if you take a swim. Neoprenes give you some floatation also, as well as warmth. They are usually hot in summer. Hippers fill up if you take a swim and drag you down.
  3. Doctors vs. Gun owners Doctors (A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000. ( Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000. © Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171. Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Now think about this: Guns (A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000. (Yes, that's 80 million) ( The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500. © The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .000188. Statistics courtesy of FBI >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Remember, 'Guns don't kill people, doctors do.' >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!!!!! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Out of concern for the public at large, I withheld the statistics on lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention!
  4. I have used Photoshop Elements for years and it works great. I still use an older version, 3.5. If you want something simple and free try Gimp, Faststone Image Viewer, and the software that come with most cameras will edit, crop, fix redeye, etc. Google Gimp Image Edit or Faststone Image Viewer to get download pages.
  5. How often do you wear a pair of waders and how do you store them? Hip waders are worthless unless you are going to be in knee deep water, any deeper than that and they end up becoming 2 lead weights to anchor you to the bottom. Most trout streams exceed the limits of a hip wader. You Any modern chest waders will serve you well as long as you care for them. Dry them by hanging by boots or feet then fold them up and store in temperature controlled environment. There is no "treatments". Goretex or Breathables are the best out there and can be had for less than $150. Neoprene or other materials will be cheaper.
  6. Nice glass lens, AA battery capable, large viewfinder, SD memory cards are all what you really need to look at. Avoid rechargables that require a dock. Waterproof or water resistant is nice. Quick startup time really helps
  7. Slim- Snake, same as Herbie No Shoulders Herp Alert- Snake in a tree you are about to float under. WTF- Wheres the Fish? Banking- Passing up a hole with a fisherman to get to the next one up or down stream. Submarine- Canoe floating by mostly submerged or flipped over.
  8. Was it the Faststone Image Viewer?
  9. You really can't discourage someone from breaking the laws. Some buy deer or turkey tags after they kill a deer or turkey. I am sure some do the same with trout. My point is that there is a Blue Ribbon Trout Stream that is also a Smallmouth Management Stream I fish. There have been times I fished it primarily for Smallmouth and was not targeting the trout in the stream. Why should a person have to purchase a trout stamp if they don't fish for the trout? Spring River in Arkansas also comes to mind, it is a trout stream with all 4 species of trout, but the state record Muskie came out of it. I also fish it for Smallies, Largemouth, and Goggle Eye. It is one of the trout streams in Ark where it is not required to have a trout stamp to fish the waters.
  10. Another wrinkle here. If you buy a tag at a Trout Park, catch and keep your daily limit of trout in a park, then go to another area to fish. Do you think you can catch and keep 4 more fish per state regulations? You paid extra for a special daily tag to catch special fish in a special area separate from Statewide regulations. You have in your possession a State Trout Stamp that allows you to possess 4 trout under state regs. Any thoughts on that one? Probably not. The reason, all fish are either property of the state or raised with tax dollars of the state. This would not apply to Private fisheries like Westover, etc.
  11. Possession in Trout Parks is limited to the TROUT only as far as I know. I have seen some walking around with a sucker or a bass on a stringer but I think they were tempting a ticket. I had this conversation with an agent one time and only Trout are allowed to be possessed in a Trout Park. You have to buy a special TAG that allows you to fish the Trout Parks which binds you to the regulations pertaining to that tag. The land surrounding the stream and the regulations for the streams flowing thru the park covers the regulations. I think it was designed to eliminate the possibility of someone reaching the possession limit of trout from claiming he was fishing for another species. Streams outside of Trout Parks go back to State Regulations. There is no regulation stopping you from fishing for/or catching a Smallie in BSSP, just possession or retention. Technically, once you retain 4 fish in a park, you have to quit all fishing in the park. Even if you take the fish to camp or eat them for lunch, 4 per day only. I have never had a problem with this because all you have to do is go outside the Park and fish all you want, you are on Statewide regulations then.
  12. The signature series has been around for a long time also. I assume the traditional tyers are migrating away from the Classics. I use a few of the Mustad hooks from time to time but prefer the Daiichi and Orvis hooks for their thin wire strength, quality, coating, and sharpness.
  13. Well Laker, I just buy a trout stamp anyway. Always have. I have not possessed a trout in MO streams all year. But the MDC Fisheries division relies on the income from the stamp to keep up production. There are streams like the Current River, 11 pt, Little Piney, just to name a few, where the Smallies and other game fish overlap the Trout areas. There are people that fish the streams without ever targeting a trout. When they did away with the physical stamp, I had second thoughts about even buying one, but I did anyway. The physical stamps were a part of the heritage of the trout program like duck stamps are to waterfowl hunters. Competitions for the artwork. Selling of the prints. And the additional sales of stamps to persons that collect the stamps. But now all we have is another line on our license. As long as you have pictures, witnesses, and measurements you can replicate your trophy without killing the fish and have it qualify for IFGA records I believe. If in the off chance you catch a State record book trout, then it will have to die in order for you to get your moment of fame. It will have to be weighed on a Certified Scales.
  14. Since I have only been to Taney once, it may have changed. I know Ark changed it on most streams because the trout hatcheries were losing out on revenue from trout stamp sales due to the trend in Catch and Release. The Ozark Streams in MO I normally fish do not require a Trout Stamp unless you intend to possess.
  15. Hope you let it go unharmed. They are trying to figure out what is killing them off, they suspect the Brown Trout. I know they are on the threatened or endangered species list in both Ark and Mo. They taste worse than a Spotted Owl so it is best to just throw them back.
  16. If the Agent misunderstands the law, then a lawyer or a judge will decide. An agent may actually be writing a ticket for some other infraction than what you think they are. If you are fishing in an area where there are multiple species present, like all of the streams in MO, then you can fish after you keep a limit of one certain species. There is no way you can Target one species of fish when there are multiples present, so if you accidentally catch a fish which you possess a limit of and release it, unharmed, there is no law broken. If you cull one off a stringer and replace it with one caught, you violate a law. In trout parks, the only species you are allowed to target is the trout. The above will not apply. Missouri laws allow you to fish a stream containing trout and catch and release them all day long with out a trout stamp. The trout stamp is for possession only. Some Arkansas streams require a Trout Stamp to even fish them, regardless if you are targeting trout, smallies, largemouth, or bream.
  17. Other measures are in the pipes from the anti-gun nuts are rounds that Expire in X amount of time and a 500% tax on ammo. Ammo is fast approaching the point of too expensive. 2 years ago I picked up 50 rounds of 45 acp practice loads for about $12 a box of 50. Today, a box runs $21. Metals have went down again, so component costs should be going down. Hazmat charges for shipping powder is about what the pound of powder costs.
  18. I believe in streams and lakes it is ok to continue fishing after taking a limit of trout or bass. If you catch a limit of one fish species and there are other species that you may possess a legal limit of, you can keep fishing. Trout parks, you reach possession limit, you have to stop.
  19. Bonus Fish- Reeling one in that has someone else's lure in it also. Sneaky Pete- Guy who keeps dipping something out of his pocket in the Flys only Area. Ranger Rick- Game warden. Flying Fish- Aerobatic fish that leaps as you reel it in.
  20. Also, probably using a gun and ammo he stole from a law abiding citizen in the process.
  21. Spectators- Non fishing persons who go by and ask "Catching Any?". Guide- Person that responds to a "Spectator" with a full fishing report. Liar- Person that responds to "Spectator" question while trying to land a fish with a "Nope" Canoe Butt- Sore butt following a long float trip. Swamp butt- When the sweats soaks your underwear on a hot summer day. Butt Flu- Condition that occurs after the morning White Castles go thru the digestive system.
  22. Red bellies- Longear sunfish Heads up!- Hot chick going by. Trolling- What those guys are doing that are "backed in" on the lot at Taney. Clusterf@#%- Any tangle of line that involves the reel and the rod and prevents fishing for at least 5 minutes. Seedticks- Small redbellies that barely can get the lure in their mouth.
  23. Yak- What my passengers do after the curves on the way to the trout stream. Goony Bird- Heron Stomper- Guy who feels like he has to wade thru the middle of the hole just because he is wearing waders. Spectators- Guys that feel the need to stand on the high bank on the other side of the stream where you are fishing. Fart mud- Soft bottom with methane buildup that bubbles up around you. Dance's Eel- When a crankbait tangles the line in a hook and spins on the top while you retrieve it. Herbie-No-Shoulders- Snake Wet Fly- What a Dry fly turns into when you catch a fish on it. Black Duck- Crow
  24. Beanbags are for a special gun, not a standard shotgun. You can buy non lethal loads. You can buy rubber bullets that are powered by a primer alone for indoor practice in handguns and shotshells with plastic or rubber pellets for animal control. If you are going to shoot a human that is giving you a reason for a justifiable shooting, you had better use a lethal method or you will just make him mad and end up causing yourself more grief. Pulling a firearm on a person and pointing it at them means you are willing to kill them and you are making that decision to do so. You should not ever have to use a firearm to scare someone off or wound them, you shoot to kill and make sure you are doing so for a justifiable reason, IE, they intend to do you or your family grave harm. Cops use tasers, bean bags, and pepper spray to control someone without getting hurt themselves while performing their everyday job of dealing with jerks. They used to use nightsticks, but they are not politically correct any longer.
  25. The main thing is more money out of my pocket for something I love doing. . More big brother, more stupid laws that they don't need, more taxes, more regulations, and more wasted time. There are plenty of laws and regulations to cover any crime committed in this day and time. People will kill people, it has happened since the beginning of time and it was done with a rock. Do we serial number rocks? They will keep trying to get it passed, they will sneak it in on something, probably on a bill prohibiting the tossing of beads at a girl on the river......
