  1. Hey 10pointer,got a chance to go to Montauk and fish with Susie and my 2 brothers on Monday and Tuesday. They camped 3 nights and we roughed it at the motel.Fishing has been real good the last 4 trips we've made to Montauk. We fished our usual 5-6 hours and again the usual patterns did well.Older brother thought it was the best trout fishing trip he had been on in years and the size and the fight of the stockers was great. They both jig fish more than fly fish so I spent a good portion of today melting some jigs for the next family outing. So how did that big male coho from up North come out?
  2. You can always practice your skills in the C&R area where you can't wade and the fish can usually be caught on a scud pattern.Watch for fishing feeding in the riffles and below the outlet.Montauk can be tough to flyfish off the bank as it is a little more like a normal stream with trees, bushes ,etc. to catch your gear. You can wet wade some of the stream without getting over your knees and get away from the bank.We have been catching a lot of fish on zebra midges, egg patterns and the scuds that I mentioned earlier.
  3. Thank to all-most of the time there's a lot of laughing and bs involved and I sometimes wade to deep to have a very good camera.Kids bought me a nice Panasonic camera that is waterproof to a certain degree so thats what I use.It probably has all those features and I'm usually to busy trying to catch the next fish that I haven't done much searching on how to use it the most effective way.
  4. I'm thinking rattlesnakes!
  5. Neat pictures-I have trouble taking a good picture with any kind of camera.Often they have a blurred look to them probably from me not holding the camera steady.Great color !
  6. Took my wife Susie and an old baseball playing buddy from college to Montauk Friday.Jerry Pike originally came to MAC to play baseball in the fall of 1971.We fished and hunted back then and his only experience trout fishing was at Maramac Springs over 40 years ago.He moved back to this area a couple of years ago and wanted to try fly-fishing.Got set up with a good outfit and made his first trip ever to Montauk. The water was in excellent shape and we fished for 6 hours down thru the campground. He caught probably a dozen fish and had at least that many hooked that got away.Sight fishing with scuds, egg patterns and zebra midges again worked well and as the day progressed he did an excellent job for a person fly fishing for only the 3rd time.He also managed to hook the big fish of the trip-an 18-19" rainbow that threw the hook after several minutes of battle.
  7. Again a nice write-up on a local guide. And the brown he's holding is awesome.
  8. As in a couple hundred? Went today again and found 42 but woods are still dry around here.
  9. Thought I'd post a new fishing report from Good Friday at Montauk.Wife Susie and I got away Friday morning on a one-day trip to the park.Don't usually start fishing till around 10am so we can sight fish easier. Not too bad a crowd at that time and fished thru the campground catching lots of fish.Fish sizes were better than the last report overall and we both could have kept a nice limit of 14-16" fish but didn't.Susie used scud and egg patterns most of the day and I caught most of my fish on a zebra midge and a small tan emerger.headed back to the car a little after 4pm and noticed the Holiday weekend crowd was starting to fill up the campground.
  10. Found 15 today and 2 deer sheds but the ground is dry.Older brother's wife was out walking the dog and found some. She brought them back but told him she left the little ones so they would grow bigger! He went back and found 42.Trying to borrow the dog now as he supposedly found the first bunch.
  11. Wondered when you posted that note if someone would bite on it.You where at one time a friend of Steve Smith's weren't you?
  12. That was nice, thanks for sharing it.
  13. nice fish haven't seen a lot that size this season.
  14. C or D and a couple 3 for the vehicles
  15. No, jd, we had asked about placing the bench up near the C&R where Brett fish started his fly fishing career or either in the campground area where the smell of someone cooking bacon would lure him off the stream and to breakfast at the Lodge.Brett's memorial bench sit's along side the slow pools south of the little cemetary as you come in from Hwy.119 into the park. The C&R locale had to be out of the flood plain and the oxygen lines buried in that area posed a problem. Not sure the problem with the campground area but are satisfied with the place they recommended.I know of the memorial you speak of but don't know the story behind it.
  16. Wife ,Susie got one in the mail recently and we haven't fished walleye since we fished Black River in the late 60's and early 70's.Got a survey about fishing the various lakes across the state the very next week.Again we don't fish alot of the bigger lakes other than Taneycomo so I didn't have much to offer the questionaire .There was a small section on the trout parks and wrote a little essay on the "decline" in the quality of fishing there.
  17. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.
  18. Had a good trip to Montauk yesterday with older brother Bob and younger brother Dave.Didn't start fishing until 1000am and started in the C&R with all using fly rods. Both brothers don't fly fish that much but they did catch 10-15 fish in the 40-45 " we fished there.Next stop was the fly zone where we discussed the wind and the ability to sight fish under those conditions. It was a lot tougher for them but we did catch as many as most of the folks fishing. Both soon wanted to use their ultr-lights so we headed back to the car for a quick bite and they tried the spring branch and caught several each.I suggested the bait zone in the campground area and the catch rates went up for all.Fish were on the small size but there were enough to make it a good day and I missed fired on a nice brown.Saw several old friends and finally got to sit on the bench honoring our son Brett who passed away 3 1/2 years ago.Took 3 years to get the bench and the memorial plaque in place. A special thank you again to Laker 67 and Miss Sandy as they decided they wanted to help place the memorial bench for our son with a sizable donation.
  19. Zone 1 can be tougher if the wind picks up very much but always holds a lot of fish.I always take a peak off the handicap ramps if it's available as it gives you a great look into the deeper water and sometimes bigger fish.Course the wind won't hurt you as much if your throwing bigger jigs on spinning gear or 1/100 oz stuff under a float. That chop on the water makes that 1/100 oz. jig dance.Good luck.
  20. Johnny, enjoyed the video and brought back a lot of good memories of opening day at BSSP.Would have loved having the video about 20 years ago give or take a few years when an older gentleman I was standing next to facing the bridge in zone 2 made his first cast at the siren.Turned his cast loose a little early and way too high and landed in the people watching from on top of the bridge. the look on his face as I was trying to get him not to set the hook was priceless.Nice work again.
  21. laker67; only thing that would have made it better would've been you and the Mrs. joining us at the cabin.Wonder how many fish went to stock the urban area lakes made it thru the winter we have had.Don't know the size or depth of the lakes but some of the fish stocked probably didn't benefit fare very well.Oh well without a lot of big fish to fish for it left a lot of time to "just fish" and we did enjoy that.
  22. Fished the opener at RRSP and had a good day of fishing.Didn't see as many big fish as we've seen in past years but the average size of the stockers was great.I'll often go above the C&R portion on the back side and don't have to contend with shoulder to shoulder conditions.Wife Susie fished after breakfast for her first time at an opener and caught one fish of about 4# and had 2 more on in that same range.I caught one of 3 1/4# and lost another close to that size.Cut the trip short and hurried out this a.m. trying to get ahead of the weather.Old friend Danny Horton was along to join in and caught his share of the stockers.Said it was the best year in a long time for the average fish.
  23. The music was perfect too!
  24. Hey Laker, wish I'd kept the letter it came in.It was from some Doctor doing research. We aren't real close to water that has been invaded by these species and have only seen them in Southern Illinois when we crossed over a couple rivers on the train. They were trying to get an idea of the commercial appeal for various usages of these carp.
  25. Was wondering if anyone got a short questionnaire from the University of Missouri in the last week or so?I received one in the mail last week with several questions about Asian/bighead,etc. carp.Started with questions concerning general knowledge about the species and ended 20 or so questions later about using the resource for tablefare, etc.Didn't know a lot about the subject other than what I've read on this website and the various printed articles.
