  1. hmmmm....for clarity, what is the nearest town you'll be staying at-St. James or Sullivan? In other words, there is the Meramec State Park at Sullivan and then there's Maramec Springs run by the James Foundation at St. James. If it's the Springs you're going to then 1. yes, it's in the park. 2. no, you can only fish until the whistle (in the park) and any bait goes. After the whistle, you can go below the park where it is flies only. But ya better hurry if you want to fish in the park as the season closes after Wednesday.
  2. Phil, I've heard the only part of that "plan" that is actually a Robin Williams quote is the very last line: "The Statue of Liberty..."
  3. I have the iPhone. And while it was intimidating at first, after a couple of weeks I couldn't believe how easy it is to use. My wife has a BlackBerry and the iPhone is hands-down a much better product. It blows me away how many features it can perform and the camera takes unbelievably high quality pics. I think the 4G model can still be had for $299. Like FF says, go in and take one for a test ride.
  4. Matt, you may want to post it over here as well... Hook.TV
  5. Dang bro, you live so close to so many good waters....unless you're looking to teach someone how to fish or to impress that special someone with your fishing prowess, I just don't see the point. If you just can't resist the allure of the prosti-trout, I believe it's still catch-n-keep at Rockbridge. Don't know anything about stream access outside of the place though.
  6. Welcome Gary. Do you ever rent that great cabin out?
  7. Oooops, sorry Dave. Guess we went off on a tangent. I've fished both quite a few times over the years. Yes, Windrush is near Cook Station and owned by the Drennans and well worth visiting. IMO I've always preferred Windrush for its natural stream setting. The place formerly known as Springrise always felt too manicured for my tastes. Kinda like fishin on a golf course. Looks like they are closed until September 14 and then only open on Fri-Sat-Sun. http://www.windrushfarms.com/
  8. I hear ya. It is what it is...you pay 50 bucks at the door and with a wink and a nod you get your rod bent for as long as you want. I do go for the fix once a year or every other year. But afterwards, I usually feel cheap and dirty ;-) I haven't been since the new ownership, but it looks like they are pumping some serious cash into the place. I do think they'll do quite well however. Especially with the corporate retreat angle. Just thinkin' that most of us aren't the target market...
  9. Huh??? Looks like it's pay-to-play just like when Quint and Cicely had it. 'Cept for the fact that Paul Dallas is no longer allowed on the property ;-) http://westoverfarms.com/activities/westov...es-fishing.html
  10. WOW...very cool. Someday. Someday.
  11. When I first read this post this morning I thought, uggghhh--somebody just watched "The Movie" again or reread "Trout Bum." After all, what's posted above has been discussed ad nauseum on every FF forum and in every FF publication since Dame Juliana first pulled up her knickers to wade in a chalk stream. Then I thought "who in the Sam-hell is Rabbi Eric?" Like WebFreeman, I dug a little deeper to figure out who this mysterious NYC bagel eater was and why was he molting on our rock...lo and behold, he's one of us...a Missourah boy. Honestly Eric, I like the unedited version much better. Sure, I don't fall into the target audience of it, but the message still rings true. As God once said, "It's all good." (Or at least I think I heard him say that.) Welcome to OAF, I look forward to more Reflections from a Fly Fishing Rabbi. And don't be afraid to wear your kippah around these parts! After all, it's all good. PS: You didn't really ever go a day without seeing a fish in a trout park did you?
  12. Windrush Farms is always an option Click Here Nice accommodations and VERY friendly fish.
  13. I'll second Eagles Nest. Although you see some interesting folks camping at Tan Vat all the time. Just last fall I pulled into the lot early one morning and saw the most tattered set-up I've seen in a long while. Even through the early morning fog, I could see several kimonos drying on a clothesline and a pile of empty Old Crow bottles tossed into the firepit. The tent had definitely seen better days. From the sound of the snoring, it had been a late and inebriating night. When I returned to the truck later that afternoon, I heard the screaming a mile away (sounded like someone cussing in Japanese). As I packed up, an extremely scruffy individual asked me for a ride to the Montauk lodge. Seems his female companion had gotten ticked off and left him (for good this time). As we drove the short distance to the lodge and puffed on some cigars, he told me an amazing story of how he had been somewhat of a celebrity BASS fisherman and even hosted a television show in Japan years earlier. I sure wish I could remember his name.
  14. Sounds like a good float CWF. As far as the goats are concerned...I have seen such a beast on only two occasions. Once was at the Exotic Animal Paradise in your hometown, and the other was on an episode of "Daktari".
  15. Sure, it's possible Hank but... Wouldn't a pair of waders be a bit more practical?
  16. Really good stuff snagged. Reminds me of the prose Paul Dallas would submit after waking up in pile of empty Old Crow bottles, discarded kimonos and a bad case of amnesia.
  17. Hey Gavin, it looks like there are a few of them listed on missouriscenicrivers website. Go to http://www.missouriscenicrivers.com/HorsebackRiding.html
  18. Deep down, don't you still wonder about the real story behind the "2sheds" ?
  19. Actually 3wt, the stem cells are removed from the blastocyst before being placed in the petri dish where they are allowed to continuously divide (which is what they do naturally). Blastocysts as such are not cloned. And please remember that these are blastocysts that will 100% be discarded anyway.
  20. Sweet fancy Moses. We are talking about using cells that are going to be discarded anyway. Why not use them to help save the pain and suffering of millions of people worldwide? Like others, I personally know people who are suffering from diseases that quite possibly could be saved from this research. Watching a close friend's wife die over the course of several years from a degenerative disease SUCKS. A disease that could be helped from this research. And two young men I know who cannot walk without the aid of a walker and cannot read a computer screen because they were afflicted by MS in their 20s. It doesn't seem right to deny them of HOPE. I understand the ethical dilemma. Being raised Catholic, all my life it was drilled into my head that sex for any reason other than procreation is illicit. Well guess what? We are now in an age where in vitro conception is as common as Powerbait and sex is sometimes performed for reasons other than wanting to change diapers in 9 months. The fact is, unused blastocysts are discarded by the thousands every day. Why are the opponents of Prop 2 not fighting for their rights? Should we plant those puppies in available wombs instead of trash cans? What about the rights of those that are already alive and could benefit so much from this research? And this pish posh about cloning.... c'mon people get real. Scientists will remove the stem cells from blastocysts and allow them to duplicate. No embryos are being cloned. You will not pass by your likeness on the sidewalk. Like Al mentioned, the stem cells at stake are the ones that provide the most hope. Adult stem cells have a predetermined function and are extremely limited. I'm all for their use, as is everyone else, but there is so much more to consider here. Cells that can be focused on one specific function offers hope to the 3 year old child with diabetes, the 18 year old burn victim, the 35 year old with spinal injury, the 52 year old with cancer, and the 80 year old with Alzheimer's. Jesus performed many miraculous healings over the course of his short ministry. The technology we are talking about is nothing short of a modern-day miracle. Please consider both sides of this issue carefully before casting your ballot. And please don't get caught up in the hype of politicians and their scare tactics.
  21. My wife and I were in NYC this past weekend. Went down to Ground Zero on Sunday and just stood and stared at the enormous hole in the ground. The feelings of confusion, sadness, and anger wash over you immediately as it is still so hard to understand. As you can imagine, hundreds of news vans with their satellite dishes lined the streets and reporters filming everwhere. Our flight left LaGuardia yesterday and flew over the site. I couldn't help but imagine what was going through the passengers' minds those last few minutes. Just an incredibly moving experience but made me very proud to be an American.
  22. Nice job jorob. The few times I took my kids there they had a blast. Watching one of my kids reel in a fish on their own is more fun than catching a fish myself. If anyone wants to get their kids into flyfishing for trout, this is an excellent resource!
  23. I initially went down the Python Road as well twosets. But the real "aha" moment, whether you're building a second shed or a missile defense component, lies in the blueprints. Look closely, and you will see what we were digging for..."Ev'ry body knows there's nothing finer Than a Miner!"
  24. CWF, the secret lies in a vault (probably more specifically, a cave) deep in the hills of Rolla, MO.
  25. 2sheds, are you sure that the gentleman in your photograph is a bagpiper? He just doesn't have the barrel chest that is so typical of the Celts. Perhaps he is just starting out? twosets, it's a good thing you were able to photograph and release that monster in such quick manner. As I also look forward to catching snagging him sometime soon. All of this talk about 2sheds really has me thinking. In fact, I awoke in a cold sweat last night wondering, perhaps I should build a second shed. Are there negative ramifications of doing so? How many of y'all have more than one shed? Can you post blueprints?
