You're thinking of two separate events. The Lawn Lake flood and the Big Thompson flood. Lawn Lake was in the 80's. The lake is a man-made and way up in the mountains. It had an old earthen dam that broke. Sent water down Roaring River into the Fall River valley and on into Estes. There were a handful of fatalities in the Aspen Glen campground. That's the alluvial fan one and it's easily viewable from up on Trail Ridge Road or Google Earth. The remnants are still very visible in the form of boulders and long-dead trees in the valley. You can catch greenback cutthroats in front of tourists among the boulders where Roaring River and Fall river converge. Google Earth kmz file here. Big Thompson flood was in the 70s and was the result of a huge amount of rain in a small time. The Big T canyon was inundated and there were 100+ fatalities. A big, big, deal. John Gierach writes about being out on a multi-day fishing trip in the area and learning about the magnitude of it from a newspaper headline. He said it occurred to him that if he ever just wanted to just disappear, it would have been the perfect opportunity.

Yeah, Wayne -- they still do it in the butcher's paper with bread. I'm not a big fan of their limp fries, or their standard sauce for that matter. But they do a good job on the rest and they have other sauces that are more my style -- sweet with a little heat. I've been to their restaurant near the racetrack a couple times now. They haven't got it figured out there and I'm done giving them my money. I think AB's is riding a lot on reputation these days. Mediocre food in that high-dollar real estate won't last. bfshn -- I remember the big jug in the window. I always thought it looked kinda nasty. Jug all dusty, some sort of scum on the surface. It was a good call getting rid of them. Not much else has changed though.

Dang -- I've heard of Project Healing Waters, but never paid much attention. That's awfully cool stuff they're doing, and your trip just sounds outstanding -- like a fly fisherman's dream trip. I don't know you, but I'm glad you got to go nonetheless.

Ahhh, the memories. The five of us hurtling down the highway at 80 miles an hour in a smoke-filled, 5 ton Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser. Nary a seat belt in sight. The primo location for us kids was the backward-facing fold up seat in the back, nestled atop a tank of 29.9 cent Ethyl. You could spread out a little back there, plus you were out of reach of mom's flailing arms. Singing 99 bottles, counting license plates, and trying to get the 18 wheelers to honk -- hopefully scaring the bejeezus outta dad. Those were the days.

Very sweet! That water looks phenomenal! I've never been fishing up there but I've wondered. How was it? We did that trip when I was a kid, but we didn't fish. I saw on FB you did the Corn Palace. Classic! You had to feel a little Griswold, no?

Ha, I see I'm not alone. I do like to camp, but I'm getting to where it's more trouble than it's worth especially now that the kids are grown. If I do, it's a pretty scaled down affair these days. There's a lot to be said for having a bed, shower, fridge and microwave. Oh, and a toilet, continental breakfast, internet, ice machine, TV.

I don't disagree with your point about the flaw in assuming everywhere is colder, but you are just stirring the pot here, bro. Moving it to the conservation forum doesn't fix that. Not making purposely provocative statements does though. I would think we could talk about cool weather because it's, well...cool out there. My daughter was near Steamboat a couple weeks back, and it was hotter there than here at times -- even though they're a few thousand feet higher. What's it like in Denver now? 56 degrees this morning, mid-70s now.

It used to be a hopping place when they were in the River Market area. I bought my canoe there. I stopped by their Belton location on a weekday a couple years ago and the guy didn't even have the lights on in the store until I went in.
