  1. Something tells me they'll figure out the pie tins. Electric may be the way I have to go. Would want something solar powered and idiot/kid proof.
  2. I finally had a permanent fence built around the garden to keep out rabbits. But the squirrels are particularly bad this year. I’ve had a lot of stuff dug up, replanted and dug up again. Beets, spinach and radishes in particular. I think cayenne works ok but it doesn’t last long. Going to research this more. We quit seed feeders for birds because of squirrels. Just doing hummingbirds, orioles and suet now.

    What's Cooking?

My maternal grandparents were born in Lebanon and immigrated to PA. My mom never cooked anything Lebanese. I’m not sure why. But my aunts made ‘grape leaves’ and labneh. Labneh was plain yogurt that was put into cheesecloth, suspended over a bowl and allowed to drain. Essentially what we call Greek yogurt. I’ve had dolmas from many places but the best I’ve had are at a Greek restaurant in KC called Tasso’s. They’re served with a delicious lemony avgolemono sauce.

    What's Cooking?

Thanks. I'm not familiar with 7 spice but just looked it up. This all sounds pretty darn good. The cooking process is similar to the grape leaves we do here occasionally.

I’d like to learn more about this! What’s in there? How was it prepared?

    What's Cooking?

Yeah, I get the novelty thing. I avoided buying it at first because of the hype and they only wanted to sell me 12. But it’s just good. I’m not an ipa guy. I like malt and light bitterness, and this fits the bill. I love Guinness but most other stouts I’ve tried don’t work. Gonna be in Dublin in a couple months and will get it from the home office!

    What's Cooking?

I'm fairly sure I've had Yuengling before, but it would have been several years ago up in WI at a festival with all kinds of beers being tried and I didn't remember it. Like you, we're getting it around here now. I saw it on a menu recently, so I bought a draft. A little bit of malt/color, and light on the bitterness. Good stuff.

    What's Brewing?

Opened up @BilletHead’s meads tonight, after giving it a few months to age. It’s very good! Very certainly made from honey as it really comes through. Fairly sweet but very nice. Thanks!

    Messin' With Sourdough

Same here. And, I do this so infrequently that there's not really any consistency developed.

    Messin' With Sourdough

Yeah, it did break kinda funny. Watched a few videos from this guy, https://www.chainbaker.com, and he cuts a little off center and with a slight curve. At least that's what it looks like. I'd probably go down the middle next time. That flap I ended up with wasn't that great, and it scorched a bit. Always learning.

    Messin' With Sourdough

I haven't made sourdough or any bread in a looong time. I've still got this culture, but it hasn't been fed in months. I've neglected it for months before, but this is the longest ever. I'm reasonably certain I can revive this and make some bread. When these cultures sit, they kinda separate out. The flour gets gummy and sinks, the liquid, called 'hooch', which is partly alcohol, floats on top and takes on a dark color. I've seen two schools of thought on hooch: pour it off or stir it back in. Last couple times I've revived my culture, I stirred it back in. So, that's what I'm gonna do today. Before: Hooch, whole wheat flour and bottled water stirred in: I guess we'll see how this goes, but I'm pretty optimistic.
  21. Good article here https://theathletic.com/4337563/2023/03/23/kansas-state-naeqwan-tomlin-sweet-16/
  22. Very high percentage of folks west of Topeka are K-State fans. Metro KC to Topeka is weighed pretty heavily toward KU, at least until this week
  23. Never really been a basketball fan -- it was always football. I don't ever think I've watched more than a couple minutes of an NBA game. Occasionally some college basketball gets watched, but not much. Dad and all my uncles/cousins went to KU. We went to some football games when I was a kid, probably mid/late 60's and after Gale Sayers was gone. I didn't ever become a KU fan, because you've got to have a respectable football program for me to be a fan. Several friends went to K-State, and when my daughter decided to go I was pretty happy with her choice. Good school, plus in-state A great football history and I always loved Snyder's focus on the full person and life after football, not just the 4 years. I always remember the first time my daughter came home and excitedly said, 'Dad...the guys hold the doors for the girls there!' It's a great school with a great atmosphere. It's different than KU, where my misguided second child went. Anyhoo -- our hearts were pounding here last night too. Not like they were during the Super Bowl, but pretty close. That spark-plug Nowell is sure fun to watch. The back stories on Tomlin and Coach Tang are good ones worth looking up.
  24. I have fond memories of watching Harold Ensley The Sportsman's Friend with my dad and brother. He did a little of everything. All outdoor scenes shot on film without sound, and narrated in studio on live TV. And that song...quite possible my next ear worm Saw him at the KC sports show one year. He had his red ford station wagon there with him, which I thought was pretty cool. Here's a pic I scraped off the wide wide world of web
  25. What a story! Little did I know when I woke up this morning I'd be learning about pigeons. Pigeons saving lives, krauts shooting down pigeons, pigeons that can't fly, and pigeons that can fly for a minute then stall out and tumble. It brings to mind this favorite (not) from childhood:
