    What's Cooking?

  3. Yeah, it’s similar to the flu. Just more deadly, more easily transmitted, less well understood and there’s no vaccine. We’re pushing 200,000 deaths in the US. Of course CDC is padding the numbers, Fauchi is a fraud and our leadership has done a fine job while being totally mistreated by the press. Laughable @Quillback What can I do to get this thread quarantined? Trump Biden Pelosi Schumer McConnell??😄
  4. That's what's tough about this -- it affects different people in different ways. Like I said above -- we're still learning.
  5. @ColdWaterFshrAre there mask mandates or distance requirements in these places? We've got mandates pretty much everywhere and I very rarely see somebody without a mask. Distance rules in restaurants too, but it's all over the board depending on where you are. It's tough, obviously. Every state, county, city and school district has had to figure this out on their own. Every parent of a school-aged child has had to figure things out. Every teacher has had to adapt, learn new software, teach kids the new way, whatever. My wife and daughter are teachers and in the middle of all this. Every business has had to adapt. Can't complain about my situation though. The historically low interest rates have meant record levels of loan originations for the bank. Our stock is up 37% for the year. We set an earnings record last quarter. We can't hire people and train them fast enough.
  6. I think another variable in there is we are learning how to treat it better.
  7. Saw this scene on MeTV again tonight. Cracks me up every single time. Stick with it...
  8. Check your favorite social media sources 😄 BTW, while I was wasting my time in this thread, local TV news finished and rolled into ET. I guess the Kardashians are quitting their show! Dang!! Done here.
  9. Couple more iterations and this thread will get banished to the rubber room. 😄
  10. I’m of the opinion that we’re still learning and I’m keeping an open mind.
  11. Everybody’s tired of it. I can’t chuckle about a declining death rate.
  12. Similar thing here. Up and down last week. Stuffy head, tired feeling but no cough or fever. Can’t help but wonder, but also know there’s a zillion other things it could be. The Mrs is a teacher and she’s exposed to a lot of kids daily. They take A lot of precautions there, and we take them here too, but you never know. We’re still learning.
  13. I got 10 years out of my raised beds, but the cedar is rotting out and it's time to start over. So, we pulled everything out and dismantled the beds over the weekend. No fall garden this year. Gotta say 2020 was a banner year in the garden. We had a great lettuce and radish harvest this spring. We planted Swiss chard again after a few years without it; figured out some better ways to prepare it and we really enjoyed it. Tomatoes were great until mid-summer, then we struggled with cracked fruit and later with something eating the good ones -- don't know if it was squirrels or birds. We were pretty tired of tomatoes by then so didn't sweat it too much. Still have dried tomatoes from 2019 so we didn't do any more. Peppers were great -- the best year ever. Did banana peppers and Jimmy Nardellos. This year we had really good numbers of good-sized thick-walled banana peppers. We like to stuff the bananas with sauerkraut and pickle them in a sweet brine. The JN's ended up in stir fries and we loved that. Lots of Dragon Tongue beans early on -- a delicious heirloom wax bean. I gotta say I paid a lot more attention to the garden this year and it paid off. I was in a bit of a my funk before. Mulched everything with grass clippings early on, fertilized more, tended to things better, kept the fungicide on the tomatoes, just generally worked it like you should. We're looking forward to 2021.

    What's Cooking?

We had a Dickey's not far from my house but I never went. Figured I'd rather patronize the local joints than some national chain out of TX. I haven't been up that way in a long time, so I checked and it seems they're gone now. We still have one in NKC I guess. Still gonna pass. Don't recall ever seeing their beans in the store. I think they've got some hot pickles on the shelves, but I never bit. For my beans I use Bush's regular and drain all the sauce off and pull out the chunk of whatever, then doctor them up the way we like them -- ketchup, molasses, yellow mustard, rub and some of whatever meat I'm doing. Last I checked, my baby brother uses a blend of several canned beans including good ol' Van Camps for his catering business and competitions.
  15. Oh hell, was that today? They all run together lately 😄

    What's Cooking?

You might search a little for small farmers that do CSAs or supply restaurants. I don’t remember the website but there’s one that lists CSAs and you can filter down by location.

    What's Cooking?

Think I saw Louis' mentioned on DDD or something like it. Always wanted to get to New Haven for the Pizza. I think Pepe's is the one known for the white clam pizza.
  22. I'd like to apologize in advance for this one: I see dead people ...
  23. There's no place like home due to the pandemic (I'm sick up and fed with home!)

    What's Cooking?

This all has me thinking about burger joints that have been around a long time. Many have some good memories attached. Winstead's on The Plaza in KC. Art Deco architecture that's pretty cool. Burgers, rings, shakes, sodas, The Skyscraper soda that comes in a vase and is best eaten by 2+ people. Neighbor lady used to take us there, likely to give my mom a break. An annual tradition with my kids to go down and see The Plaza lights and eat there. Expanded, contracted and only the original (1940's) location is left. Filed BK in February so it may not survive. Real estate is worth more than the franchise. Mug's Up in Independence. Drive up only, homemade root beer that's served in frozen mugs. Good stuff, food just OK. Often a stop Friday or Saturday night while cruising back in the 70's. Nice folks. HiBoy in Independence. Typical burger joint menu. Great onion rings. Lotsa stops there growing up. Nu-Way in Wichita. Used to be one in KC. Loose-meat burgers, good homemade root beer too. A must-stop to the original if I'm near Wichita.
