I was at work and on the phone with a broker when the first tower went down. They had a TV on their sales floor in KC and he was giving me a blow-by-blow...then he paused and just said, 'It's gone.' I asked him what and he said, 'The tower.' We did/do business with Sandler O'Neill a brokerage firm whose headquarters were on the 104th floor of the south tower. They lost something like 60 employees including one of the founders. I knew two people there -- Todd Rancke and Judy Scott. Todd was killed, Judy had a dentist appointment and wasn't in the office that morning. Todd was a fairly young guy with young kids. Have a friend that worked for Nomura at the time. Their HQ was in the World Financial Center across the highway from the World Trade Center complex. He saw the beginnings of things from his office before the evacuated. Bloomberg terminal has a news feed with headlines scrolling down the page constantly. That day I printed several pages of them in real time. Interesting to look at them now see how things developed. Also to see the bad info that was hitting the wire -- like the White House was hit, Sears tower too. And how the markets reacted.

That's what's tough about this -- it affects different people in different ways. Like I said above -- we're still learning.

@ColdWaterFshrAre there mask mandates or distance requirements in these places? We've got mandates pretty much everywhere and I very rarely see somebody without a mask. Distance rules in restaurants too, but it's all over the board depending on where you are. It's tough, obviously. Every state, county, city and school district has had to figure this out on their own. Every parent of a school-aged child has had to figure things out. Every teacher has had to adapt, learn new software, teach kids the new way, whatever. My wife and daughter are teachers and in the middle of all this. Every business has had to adapt. Can't complain about my situation though. The historically low interest rates have meant record levels of loan originations for the bank. Our stock is up 37% for the year. We set an earnings record last quarter. We can't hire people and train them fast enough.

I think another variable in there is we are learning how to treat it better.

Similar thing here. Up and down last week. Stuffy head, tired feeling but no cough or fever. Can’t help but wonder, but also know there’s a zillion other things it could be. The Mrs is a teacher and she’s exposed to a lot of kids daily. They take A lot of precautions there, and we take them here too, but you never know. We’re still learning.

I got 10 years out of my raised beds, but the cedar is rotting out and it's time to start over. So, we pulled everything out and dismantled the beds over the weekend. No fall garden this year. Gotta say 2020 was a banner year in the garden. We had a great lettuce and radish harvest this spring. We planted Swiss chard again after a few years without it; figured out some better ways to prepare it and we really enjoyed it. Tomatoes were great until mid-summer, then we struggled with cracked fruit and later with something eating the good ones -- don't know if it was squirrels or birds. We were pretty tired of tomatoes by then so didn't sweat it too much. Still have dried tomatoes from 2019 so we didn't do any more. Peppers were great -- the best year ever. Did banana peppers and Jimmy Nardellos. This year we had really good numbers of good-sized thick-walled banana peppers. We like to stuff the bananas with sauerkraut and pickle them in a sweet brine. The JN's ended up in stir fries and we loved that. Lots of Dragon Tongue beans early on -- a delicious heirloom wax bean. I gotta say I paid a lot more attention to the garden this year and it paid off. I was in a bit of a my funk before. Mulched everything with grass clippings early on, fertilized more, tended to things better, kept the fungicide on the tomatoes, just generally worked it like you should. We're looking forward to 2021.

We had a Dickey's not far from my house but I never went. Figured I'd rather patronize the local joints than some national chain out of TX. I haven't been up that way in a long time, so I checked and it seems they're gone now. We still have one in NKC I guess. Still gonna pass. Don't recall ever seeing their beans in the store. I think they've got some hot pickles on the shelves, but I never bit. For my beans I use Bush's regular and drain all the sauce off and pull out the chunk of whatever, then doctor them up the way we like them -- ketchup, molasses, yellow mustard, rub and some of whatever meat I'm doing. Last I checked, my baby brother uses a blend of several canned beans including good ol' Van Camps for his catering business and competitions.
