  1. Ronnie: I will be tying Fox Statler HPU Bright eyed shiner or a variation thereof in place of Michaels offering. Hope to get started this week end. Thom
  2. If no one has volunteered I will take the vacated #12 spot. Let me know so I can get started. Was lots of fun last year. Thom
  3. Quote??? Pine Squirrel streamers ? PMS... pale morning stone ? I don't even use those here. I am afraid there is not much to go on.... I have no idea.... Private Message System ?? But that's not a fly.<<<<end quote<<<<<<<<<<Sure it is a fly and a good one at that. I have heard this same put down by another so called expert but I will tell you for sure THE PMS works. Leonard started my grandson out with one on night at Taney and in less than 5 minutes he had landed 5 nice bows. I had the same experience. We killed them at Bennet one afternoon on the PMS along with a nice 4# smallie swinging it in the current in zone #2 The PMS is an excellent representation of a sculpen and works both wighted and unweighted depending on conditions and water flow. It is simular to other streamers but for some reason seems to outfish them. Zack has learned to tie them and so has my son and are a regular part of the arsenal that is one of the go to flies under the right conditions. They catch fish not saying that other streamers don't but it definately fishes differently and rides the current differently. Don't knock it if you havent tried it or don't know how to fish it. Thanks Leonard for showing us how to fish it as well as tie it. IT WORKS! THOM
  4. it is a GM product recommended for pos traction rear ends after long mileage. Can be purchased at GM dealer service dept.
  5. If you have a positraction rear end it can cause problems simuliar to what are describing. I had it happen with a truck rear end once. The good news is that there is an additive that is supposed to be used at 60000 + miles. solved the problelm in about 25 to 30 highway miles after adding.to rear end..

  7. Just an observation: I often fish new waters in other states and in doing so always hire a guidefirst time out. Without fail they always have tied on droppers. Attractor fly on top and smaller fly under. These guys make their living via word of mouth and by putting folks on fish. True there is usually a particular fly that is more successful but it varies from top one to dropper. I do agree however that the lower fly is the one that I catch the most fish on. I usually put the fly that I have the most confidence in on bottom though. Some days especilly on Taney which I consider my home water as I discover that fish are midging I go to only one fly becuase under those conditions the strikes come quickly and the target is obvious. Small jigs also sometimes present the same opportunity when the conditions are predictible and I will tie on only what is or has been working and when it slows up change to the next best choice. When fishing with a partner we usuually start with two droppers all different to cut down time to see what is on the menu. I noticed that the recent guide that I used on taney did the same when I treated my grandson to a guided trip last summer. He also called another guide from the same shop checking what they were using .... both droppers. Not to say that some times it is not the best way but lots of sucessul folks I know fish that way and I try to learn by trial and error. To answer the thread questions posed: My choices for dropper rigs are peach or orange egg with a red dot on it for the top or bright san jaun on top for dropper and small zebra blk/silver wire or copper tungsten midge rusty brown with constrasting wire. Purple and plum later in the day on bottom. Almost always deadly combo with a one unit or less or in the seams if more water flowing. Thom
  8. Explaination. I TYPED WITH AND MEANT TO TYPE WITHOUT. If you are caught fishing without barbvless hooks in the restricted areas not with barbless. 'Sorry for the typo I am told that agents will check hooks by hooking into thier cloth and if the barbed hook that was closed with pliers hooks even a thread you will get a citation.
  9. Try fishing some of those streams out west and iI have. Restrictions are far greater than they are on Taney. Those wild streams are not even accessabel in some stretches because they flow through private land and you will be quicklly arrested if you try to cross them to get to the streams. A better comparison to Taney is the White in Arkansas. Upper section produces large Browns and Bows. Regs? You can't even fish the upper part during spawn and is catch and release other times. The regs there are stricter but you can keep 5 fish instead of 4. Don't get caught fising with a barbless hook in the upper regulated waters. The relult are greater # of larger fish but again there are areas that are not fishable except by boat and it has to be the right boat unless you want to leave parts of it on the bottom. Again Drew .... interesting take but I do disagree with opening the upper section to bait fishing. There is much more pressure on Taney than during the times you mentioned and it would be so crowded it would be impossible to fish if the upper section were opened to bait fishing. From Fall Creek down there is ample opportunities to catch all of the fish that you want and includes some of the best water on the Lake. It would be nice though if more dock access like is found on the riverfront in Branson was available for bait fishermen. The only place to fish from the shore outside of the resorts is at Coopers creek. Thanks for another view Drew it is what makes the Forum interesting.
  10. What I asked. That is my opinion wrench so give me and them the same respect that you want to have for yours without demeaning comments toward them. Thanks for the respect. YOur name wasnt mentioned saying " if y ou dont have anything to hide...." If it doesnt apply don't take it personally .. just my opinoln that I what I was taught in a very conservative small southern Illinois town growing up. Actually you seem to be a pretty nice guy I just dont happen to agree with you. I make no apologies for that but I will defend your position to state your opinion as long as it does not attact someone personally. In my college debate team I was taught that argueing "ad homium" attacting the person instead of stateing a fact or making a point was a useless and pointless way of putting forth an argument. Opinions are not in that category if supported by fact. Sorry if I seemed to get under your skin I just see soo much abuse of our streams and parks that it is a touchy subject with me .... I am not implying that you are guilty of such conduct and I apologize if it seemed that way. Sometimes us old folks nearing 70 just get a little testy .... don't take it personal. Thanks for you relevent contributions to the forum. Thom
  11. I for one do not care if anyone is looking over my sholder in the restricted zone or elsewhere. The rules were made for a reason and having fished Taneycome for 35+ years I clearly see why they are what they are. Hide in the bushes, use a satellite, swim underwater I don't give a hoot cause I will be catching and releasing mostly and keeping a few for the grill or fry pan. I will abide by the law doing so and enjoy the great asset of Taney while I do leaving nothing there but my footprints and future habitat for my grandchildren and yours. Frankly I am glad that there is someone watching besides the Wardens cause no one should really care unless they have something to hide. Having met Brian a few times on the stream I know him as a gentileman who respects the great fishery we have been blessed with and have never seen him harass anyone. Informing someone that they are abusing the fishery and breaking the law should be a virtue not a vice. Thanks Brian , Phil, Bill and others who feel the same. That is my opinion wrench so give me and them the same respect that you want to have for yours without demeaning comments toward them. OK! target firmly attached to my back fire away.
  12. Cricket. I might add one thing and that is you are a great asset to this forum also. Your post states what makes this a daily stop for me and often several times a day. Some of the posters have little to gain personally but freely share their expertise and advice. After nearly 60 years of fishing I am humbled often to learn something new like just yesterday Mike Davis mentioned an anvil egg fly. Never heard of it but after looking it up it will be on my fly tying list for this winter fly tying. Thanks for reminding us.
  13. I see this almost every time I fish the restricted water. Interesting that we were given as a reason to raise fees on boat registration was to add more enforcement. I wonder where it was added? Certainlly not anywhere on Taney or any of the Trout empoundments. I was at Busch wildlife last week and there was an agent checking Trout stamps. When he left there was a man, and two boys got out of their vehicle with at least 8 poles of various kinds. They were large spinning gear with big floats on them like what one would use to fish bait. Lake 21 and 28 are both fly only and one pole only. The sad part was they parked in front of the sign that stated that but I don't think they even knew the difference. Nice family but not observng the law.
  14. \ I envy you Mike. I have fished that section of the river twice and did great both times. Not in a boat but walking in at the RR tracks and wading and then ferrying up from Rim shoals and wading. Great stretch of the river. A little of everything that Trout love and lots of fishy looking places that actually hold fish. BTW what is an anvil fly egg is that a color or a pattern? [ I looked up anvil egg and saw pic on net.... what color were you fishing if you don't mind my asking. thanks for the report. Thom
  15. I still fished the area but wow did it stink and the fishing did pick up during the dumping. I really couldnt care less if they flush the hatchery pools as long as it doesnt damage the habitat. 'This was before all of the heavy flows that we are getting now around the first part of October. Phil I do remember back in the 80's when any limbs or weeds were pulled up and shaken that numerous shrimp would fall off of them. Lots more than now and the fishing was most always effective with any small shrimp imitation. My two boys and I would float what was then called the clay banks to just in front of Lazy valley and have doubes and triples most all of the way. Those were the days. There were not a many warm bodies on the water then however and lots less pressure.
  16. That couldn't be any worse than the hatchery dumping all of its waste into outlet 1 which they do from time to time. I was down just last month and it happened. The water turned nearly black and stunk to high heaven. I waded out of the stream as soon as I could but still had my waders covered with the stench. It flowed for several minutes and must have been loaded with rotted fish execretment, mash/feed that was soured and who knows what else. I wonder why there is not a filtering system for that since no other industry is allowed to flush holding tanks or waste matter into any stream? Anyone had this happen to them. Thom.
  17. NOPE , not for a larger fly but for bows and browns. The largest fish I have landed at tan ey came on smaller flys. That small haresear caught me at least 5 bows in my very few trips this year from 18 to 20 inches. However my grandson caught a 4 # smally on a large fly he ties just at the cable during nighn water one day. so i guess it like life to each his own. Sorry for the comment flysmally it was just a comment and not meant as critism.
  18. Quote OK, Flysmallie........I'm In! When is the dead line and you said it is warm water flies??? Flysmallie: These are some of the flies that were tied last year from Duckydoty's fly swap. He did a great job but a few guys dragged thier feet getting their flies to him. Thanks Duckydoty [ I was fortunate enough to sucessfully try all of them this year. Great fun.
  19. Brian: As Phil mentioned this topic was discussed thourghly in another thread but for some general info: Put in at Coopers creek access and head upstream hanging out from the bluff side (left 20 feet or so) at a safe distance you will be ok until you get to the end of the bluffs on the left side. You will come to a series of docks on the left for a short distance and where they end you will see a small creek (short creek on the left) at this point go directly (the water is very shallow there with a hidden stump at the entrance of short creek) to the the other side of the lake and follow the bluff on the right side of the lake until you see construction (rip rap on the right side). This is the old fall creek boat dock being rebuilt. Fall creek is just at the end of the construction but the water get very shallow there on the right side. The channel shifts to the left side again and remains about 4 to 6 feet until you get close to fall creek entering on the right where the island appears at the end of the homes on the left end. I would seek more detailed info or obtain a good map (Phil has them at his Tackle store) before I would attempt to go farther. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GO ALL THE WAY TO FALL CREEK ON THE RIGHT SIDE. LOTS OF PROPS DAMAGED THERE. THE CHANNEL SHIFTS ABRUPTLY WITH THE WASH OF SILT AND DEBREE FROM FALL CREEK DURING HARD RAINS. BTW down stream from Coopers creek is also a very interesting area and has few if any shallow hazards and can be lesurely traveled all the way to Branson Landing which is a nice scenic float and has a resturant to dock at and eat. Hope this helps. Be sure to keep your depth finder on and also watch for floating debree which can be present somes during rainy seasons and heavy flow. Courtesy observing no wake area is also appreciated by the dock owners. Have fun and be safe. Thom
  20. Hey fly rod experts. I posted this elsewhere but not in right topic so here goes. I am considering purchasing the new orvis Helios 4 wgt 9 ft fly rod but am not sure what flex I want. Can anyone explain the flex index to me. My other Orvis 5 wgt 9ft rod is a 7.5 flex index. I fish mostly nymps, midges, jigs etc but am interested in all around rod and want to get in to drys since lots of times I am hitting the water and seeing lots of top action and not getting any response to midges fishing them shallow. When it comes to some of these specs I am like a hog looking at a watch. Thom
  21. Hello A question since I am here anyway. I am considering purchasing the new orvis Helios 4 wgt 9 ft fly rod but am not sure what flex I want. Can anyone explain the flex index to me. 22. If you are going to fish Taney stop by Lilleys and go in the tackle store. They have a chart there telling what is hot and how to fish it. You will find the best prices there on all items you will need to use to catch trout and good advice as well. If you can catch Curtis the dock manager there or at the office they have a map with all of the channel marked and Curtis can tell you where to use caution. Coopers creek is the best place for you to launch and Lilleys is just down the road from them. If you go strait at the Coopers creek access and turn right at the end of the lane there Lilleys is the last Resort just a short way from the turn. Just a mentioned in the previous post it is also a great place to stay also. Tight lines
  23. I am looking forward to a leisurely day ... monday.... schools in session .... no crowds .... 67 degrees and fly fishing. What could b e better this time of year? Taking time to smell the coffee before I have to go outside and shovel the snow.
  24. Great. Looks like it will be a good 67deg day and no rain if the forecast is right. I will be trying san Jauns, bright and multicolored egg fllies, various 1/80 colored jigs, zebra midge tandemed with the san jaun or egg fly. It all worked last week just had to keep changing after 3 or 4 fish on they seemed to look for something else. Thanks for the info guys. Hope you are feeling better FishinCricket Paola I noticed you are from Kansas do you also reside in the Lebanon area some. I see lot of posts from you on BS or may be I should say BSSP before someone jumps on this post and reports me for bad language. Don't want to get the nit pickers stirred up again LOL
