abkeenan Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Quick question concerning jigs fellas. I know most people here prefer jewel and chompers. I was just wondering on your preferences with the weed guards. Do u guys like the fiber strands, the one thin metal guard or no guard at all? Do u think you have better hook up rates/% with any of these over the other? Do u find that one gets hung up less or more than the other? All suggestions and opinions are welcome. -Brett
Wayne SW/MO Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 I like the wire, such as Jewel uses on store bought. On my poured jigs I use a single strand SS wire or a light multi-strand. I can buy 3 different levels of resistance on the stranded, I like the light. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Wayne where/How do you replace or use the wire instead of the fiber in the mold when you pour?
Wayne SW/MO Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 I add a wire to a football jig mold that is originally without. I use a jig saw blade of a known diameter and saw a groove in the mold. I only saw the groove in one side, that way I don't have to match it up, the guard ends up only about .015 off center. I buy a roll of SS wire and cut lengths off. For the stranded I buy the light resistance strands, I think they are adequate to make a jig weedless in the rocky bottoms we fish. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Dutch Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 I use the fiber guard in my jigs most of the time. With the light wire jigs I use a fg 12 or 13. In the ones that have the heavy hooks like the Arke, I use an fg 30 or 40 depending on what the mold takes. Once in a while I use the stranded vinyl coated cable but since I heat paint the heads, I plug the molds and then glue the wire in after the heads are painted.
