Danoinark Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 This story saddens me, sickens me and revolts me. The worst case scenario for what should have been a community policing common sense approach. The Ranger lacks it. I have been in the law enforcement community for over 25 years and I can tell you that nothing in my career has ever made me as angry as I feel right now. http://www.harrisondailytimes.com/articles/2010/02/27/news/doc4b888edede6d7080516885.txt Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
fishinwrench Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 I don't know how many dogs have been shot by the S.D. here, they are famous for it. The latest that created a big stink was a 15 year old black lab (Sadie) that was the pet of an entire rural neighborhood. They responded to a domestic call, Sadie came off the porch barking, and a deputy shot at her 5 times in a panic. Five bullets flying around a sub-division in the middle of the day because a deputy thought the old dog looked like she might bite. The county heads, of course, backed the deputys judgement 100% The only reason I'd call the law would be to aquire a (mandatory) police report for insurance purposes if my place got vandalized. Otherwise if I have a problem I'll take care of it myself. Around here, calling the law for anything just makes a bad situation WORSE. Seeing one of their cruisers go up the road doesn't make anyone feel secure at all....it makes them nervous. Where I grew up the lawmen were decent humans that a regular person could relate to, but around here they are like programmed robots with no compassion whatsoever. Who spawns these high-on-authority jackasses ?
jdmidwest Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 The dog was running deer and out of control of its owner, 2 faults. What is the problem? Is there more to the story than what I read? Seems like the officer was in his rights to protect the park land. Oh, come on man. It's not like it was a rabid pit-bull running around wreaking havoc and terrorizing people and wildlife. It was a tiny little beagle WITH a collar on. Totally unrestrained macho-moron behavior on the officer's part. This "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality is really worrisome if you ask me.

My concern is that the ranger should have used a community policing approach to the problem. There were less restrictive means he could have taken. There is no indication that the dog was vicious or a danger to humans. The dog was running deer...dogs do that. If it was illegal cite the owner and let the Court settle it. Lots of other variables come into play. Was he close to the dog when it was shot, if so, couldn't he have tried to capture it waited for the owner and written his ticket? Was the dog shot at a distance and was there consideration for anything in the line of fire? I am sure there will be lots of speculation and I rather doubt a full investigative report issued to the public. One thing I will say people down this way won't stand for this kind of event and it will be a bone of contention for locals who are upset with Government control of the Buffalo anyway. Oh, last year a ranger shot a little girls pet goat that wandered on park property. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
taxidermist Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Was this the same idiot that show goat? This was a small beagle type of dog, with a collar and owners name. Sad part is the ranger is going to be transferred soon for his safety. The rangers have been very very pushy this past year to locals, bordering on harassment.
jjtroutbum Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Sad part is the ranger is going to be transferred soon for his safety. The rangers have been very very pushy this past year to locals, bordering on harassment. Probably best for all involved. That is after he gets sued in small claims court. jdmidwest Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 I really don't want to be a jerk here, but he enforced the law and put a stop to the problem. Granted he could have caught and held the dog, but the dog was apparently causing a problem and the owner was not in control of his animal. The owner is at fault here. Having raised and used hunting dogs, one that runs deer is pretty well worthless for anything than running deer. If they start running deer and are not punished for it, then they have to be dealt with. As a dog owner or any owner of any kind of livestock, you are required to be responsible for your animals. If one of my horses gets out and gets hit by a car, who do you think will have to pay for it? As far as the goat, look at the problem we are having with feral pigs here. All because someone let a few loose. I don't know the whole story with the goat, but people release unwanted livestock all of the time into the wild. Unfortunately, the story may not be the whole truth. Newspapers tend to slant things to sell papers. There is probably more than what was reported. Don Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 People need to realize there is a difference between "the right to do a thing" and "doing the right thing." Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
