As for land animals they need a larger body to hold the body heat through the cold winters. esp those that do not lay around all winter.

I appreciate the link to Bob's article. After reading it, I can only say again that the Smallmouth Alliance is not looking to duplicate places like the Tennessee River dams or Ontario lakes. A better comparison would be rivers in other parts of the country like the John Day in Oregon or the Shenandoah in Virginia (the way it was before the current pollution problems). Rivers about the same size as Ozark streams, with similar numbers of smallmouth but a greater percentage of the population over 18 inches. Perhaps the 1/15 or 1/18 special management area concept won't get us there. Or perhaps the Smallmouth Alliance was too ambitious in the number of SMAs they proposed. After all, it was kind of a wish list. It is MDC's job to balance the wishes of different angler groups, of which the Smallmouth Alliance is only one.

Interesting that you compare the Ozark steams to two steams in which the Smallmouth is not a native species.

I think there are about 16 or so on the panel, with about a dozen actually really active on it.

Yeah, I realize they aren't native to those streams. Maybe a better comparison would be the Greenbriar, tributary to the New River, if we're talking native streams of about the same size as the Ozark rivers. But in habitat, I found the North Fork Shenandoah to be very similar to a good Ozark stream.

eric1978, thanks for the advice on imagestick I am in the process of condencing a ton of images soon to be posted on OAF and I didn't catch one of them off a bed as far as I know.I'm not trying to brag about the amout of river time it's just if the employees can handle the work load the boss is going to play!!!For anyone questioning me about a 6 plus from the Gasconade go to Troutt&Sons website and go to images and you will find the dad has three images of a smallie that is 24 inches long.I talked with him about it and he said it weighed 6+, he also caught another smallie from the same log pile that was 22 inches two cast later. Now thats a nice day on the river. Al I wasn't trying to give you trouble, I truly think you are the real GURU and look forward to every post you do on here. Also anyone coming on to my property on the Meramec in the Smallie trophy area will be in harms way, I hate to be so harsh but I had two canoes and a kayak stolen and I am fed up.I am going to shoot first and bury you later. The lack of repect in this country is out of control we have morons raising morons.I wish there was a little more survival of the fittest going with our society today.I do appologize it's just I saw three different boats this weekend with smallies on stringers, none of which were bigger than 12 inches...it truly pisses me off!!! not to mention they were in a trophy area.

That fish on Troutt and sons website is not 6 lbs or 24"

How would you know Mitch?????

I know how this story is going to end, neither one of us can prove it, you'll get pissed at me and nothing will happen. I'm not trying to discredit anyone, especially Joe Troutt, whom I know and like. People just aren't very accurate when it comes to measuring or weighing their fish. I've seen 19" fish turn into 22" the next day. I've attached a 2 pics of 21.5" smallmouth, the first one out of the Gasconade that weighed within 2 ounces of 5 lbs., the second one weighed 5 lbs 3 oz. out of the Detroit river. I think it's Newtons 5th law that states holding a fish closer to the camera will not increase the size. It is a hell of a fish but there is a better chance of Mike Tyson being elected the next Pope than that fish weighing 6 pounds.

Hey Mitch, I don't care what it weighs, that Gasconade smallmouth is an unbelievable fish. WOW! That had to be a great day for you. Beautiful creature.

Eric,

Unfortunately, I was the one taking the picture! I took my friend to my favorite hole and gave him first cast to a log jam. ...................I'll never do that again! ha ha
