Hottest part of the summer is when I usually see the white flies at Cardiac. Mid July into late August. Fishing can be tremendous for about 10 minutes at dusk, or it can be nothing. Someone called it "the mythical white fly hatch".

I was at the Meremac yesturday. And yes the white flies where hatching.

Was it at dusk, and were the fishing rising to them? Above or below Dry Fork? I might have drive down there.

I was fishing above the HWY 8 bridge and it was about 8am. I didn't see any fish riseing to them, but there are probably no trout up that far.

Snagged, the White Fly I'm talking about is the Ephoron Luekon (sp?)....size 12 or so...Usually August/Sept at dusk and into the gloaming...Hot weather, fickle fishing, and a long walk up the hill in the dark.

Which fly are you talking about...the only thing that comes to mind are the little celery colored midges that hatch at Meramec in the fall winter.

Yeah, this is definitely White-fly time, or at least getting close to it. I've fished the hatch a couple times in the prime stretches of river, and it's just never been that great to me- I just don't think trout rise very well as a rule on the Meramec at anytime, but especially not at the time of year the white flies come off. They usually coincide with low, relatively warm water, and they tend to come off best in the slow water where there just aren't that many fish. But I have talked to some people who have done really well with this hatch, so other people's experience may be different from mine. Also, if the White-flies are coming off in the areas of river with good populations of smallmouth, that could be worth looking into. When you get a hatch of big mayflies or caddis, sometimes the smallies get every bit as interested in it as trout would.

I've always thought of the Meramec as a river best fished with deep nymphs and scud patterns- I've only rarely caught fish on dries there.

That's the hatch we always thought of when refering to white flies on the Meramec. We hit it one time about 7 or 8 years ago in January when it was snowing. The flies were very small and the trout went nuts over them. It was one of those typical winter days when everything was either grey, black or white. If your fly got past a feeding trout it would rise up and turn upside down to get them.

Size 12 huh? Cool!
