Trout Commander Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 This tent is a good brand and seems economical enough, but looks to be a couple pounds to the heavier side of previous recommendations. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack

I might buy one just for float trips to spare my good one the use. Can hardly go wrong for $30, even if it's total junk.
Ham Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 I've got a Eureka Apex 3. Alledgedly a 3 person tent, but I wouldn't consider it one. It is marketed as a three season tent, but it gets a little stuffy in the summer. Getting an inexpensive (cheap) highly ventilated tent for the summer AND a better quality (DRY) tent for Spring and Fall is a workable plan. I've used my Eureka about 10 times in the 7 or so years I've had it. No problems so far. darn, Gavin camps a bunch. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish

That is the one I bought back in the summer and have used it 3 times since. I was looking for something with better ventilation than the LL Bean one I have for hot summer use. Have not storm tested it yet, but it should hold up. PITA to thread the fiberglass shock poles thru the seams to set it up and the poles themselves are my only gripe. Was worried about the "snake port" at first till I saw it closed up tight (hole for power cord). Has door front and back and fits a full size mattress inside, gear loft for a battery fan, decent rain fly with vestibules on both sides also. A little heavy to pack, but works great in the truck bag. List price was around 100 bucks and had decent reviews. I got it for the same price, it was a steal. jjtroutbum Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 THIS is a DANGEROUS thread for my wallet. I personally like to tent camp with a cot. So enough room to set up a king cot and sit upright on it but lil room other wise is about right for me. My lil Coleman was cheap but its dry and I would love to find one with the hinge door for those midnight nature calls that are happening more often these days. Ok I chuckled at the "snake port" term but I laughed my AO at your second idea. Then thought about products of my misspent tho quite fun youth. smallmouthjoe Posted November 24, 2010 Author Posted November 24, 2010 Well, I guess I'll see how good that Columbia is. Just ordered it. It has to be better than what I have now and even if it is junk I can still get a better one. But it does look pretty good and I've never had a Columbia product that was crap so I think this one may do the trick even if it is a little heavy. Thanks for the help guys.
smallmouthjoe Posted February 21, 2011 Author Posted February 21, 2011 Well I took the tent out this weekend and it performed very well. I took my lady with me and the two of us had plenty of room and if it rained we had plenty of vestibule space for our stuff. The only thing I don't like about it is the size when packed. It's marketed as a backpacking tent and I can't see me being able to squeeze it into my pack and still being able to pack all other necessitates. But it will be a great floating tent. Thanks for the help again guys.
