If you don't want to be attacked by a shark, stay out of the ocean. If you don't want to be attacked by a mountain lion, stay out of the woods. Some people die from bee stings...should we eliminate bees from the planet? You can't just go around killing because it poses a threat to you.

That's the dumbest thing I have ever read on this forum!!!

Sorry, I was going to stay out of this one, just couldn't help myself when I read that!!!

As much as it shocks me, I totally agree with this statement and add to it that if you kill something you EAT it(ted nugent philosophy). We have coyotes all around my house and mountain lions have been spotted in the area. We have raised cattle, hogs, goats, and chickens without losing any animals to them. A cow will put up a hell of a fight against anything between them and their calf.

everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.

Well if you ever go blowing by me in the gatorjet and throw off some scary wakes while I'm in my canoe, I'll pop a few rounds in you and we'll see how stupid you think it is then. Get over yourself...you're only a human. Just a speck of biological dust on the mountain of existence. You're not important, and you don't have the right to do whatever you want. If you're afraid of mountain lions, move to the city.

The article also stated that is was killed with one shot to the head from a 22. A little underpowered in my opinion, but the only legal weapon you can use at night for coon hunting. From my experiance they had to run that cat quite a bit for it to stay put in a tree. They will bail two or three times at the approach of lights and hunters before finally giving in. I would say the cat treed just where cattle happened to be and not hunting them. They started that track along ways from the cattle I guarentee you that. They guys should have pulled the dogs and went somewhere else to hunt, and reported the sighting to the MDC. He was just being a caveman and wanting some bragging rights on killing a mountain lion. He will be a big man at the corner grocery store for a few weeks.

How much does a cheap tranquilizer gun cost? Why not put it to sleep and have it relocated to an area away from livestock and people? Seems to me everybody wins. IT is not like we have a rampant Mt. Lion problem or this one was posing an immediate threat. Keep the dogs on it, call the conservation department, and have it removed. The experts can then decide what to do with it. No need to kill a species that is already rare IMO and could have been dealt with in another manner with simple phone call.

That's sort of what I'm thinking. Dogs frequently kill livestock, and kill many more people each year than mountain lions. I'm not sure that gives me license to kill every dog I see under the guise of protecting myself and my property. Same with deer- they cost farmers plenty, and have been known to attack folks. That doesn't mean I get to shoot every deer I see on sight.

There's no evidence the animal was threatening people or livestock, and if it was, there are better ways of dealing with it (call the agent, at least that way it's on the up-and-up.) This guy instead chose to kill a protected species- that's a crime, and IMO he ought to be treated like any other poacher.

Sure are a lot of wild assumptions, cattle killers, kid killers, and I suppose the list could go on forever. The problems is that Missouri is just beginning to see some cats while other states never lost their population. Believe it or not children don't seem to be on the menu and cattle rarely are in these states. As far as the ray county incident, isn't it a little early for calves?

Mtn. lions like deer, always have and always will and as long as there are deer in cattle pastures they may be there also, but it doesn't mean they are after the cattle.

I'm sure that someone is going to look into this and there's still plenty of time to file charges if they are warranted...Well just have to wait & see.

There won't be any charges as far as I can tell from this article. It appears that the man followed the law. The man had evidence that the cat (or cats) had been feeding on his calves and it is legal to shoot a predator that is harming one's livelihood in Missouri. See the link below.

That is even a dumber statement!!!

Human life is much more important than any animal. I don't agree with killing a Cougar, or any other of God's creatures just for the sake of killing. Protecting ones life, lives of others, and even property is another matter. In this state we have law called Castle Doctrine whereby a person can use deadly force on your own property. inside your house, or anywhere on your property to defend yourself against two legged predators, but somehow you think a four legged predator should be exempt because it is part of your sacred scheme of nature. As stated here in other posts nobody really has all the facts of this shooting yet. If it were a wanton shooting of an animal that was not threatening human life or livestock I'm sure the MDC will take action against the person who shot the critter.
