Stoneroller Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 ok here's the trick to removing a hook buried in your hand/finger etc. stick the appendage in cold water, ice water works best. keep it in there until if feels like your hand is on fire and you just cannot stand to keep it in anymore, then keep it in there for another 2 mins and stop being such a girl. your hand or whatever will be bright, bright red when it's ready. you won't be able to feel a thing in that appendage either. have someone else, cause you'll wuss out if you try yourself, grab the hook and swiftly and sharply snatch the hook from your flesh. some bubbly yellow stuff might come out with the hook its just fat tissue, suck it up. put some monkey blood on the hole and thank the makers that it wasn't in your eye! dtrs5kprs Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Oh dude...this so reminds me of why I can't even look at a Yellow Magic anymore after last June. Ain't it amazing how the clustertruck pulls right up and parks by you when something like that happens. In my case, I had an index finger pinned inside a keeper brownies mouth plus the popper, the fish constantly clamping its mouth shut (and rotating the hook), while I tried to explain to my 9 year old daughter (crying, partly b/c dad is bleeding all over, but more worried the fish would die) precisely what a pair of diagonal cutters looks like, and why she should never say that last word around mom. Idiot that I am, I was worried the fish would stop chasing before I could get everything fixed.
Members CollegeFish86 Posted January 29, 2011 Members Posted January 29, 2011 Being a farm kid this is my little trick. Go buy you a couple of scalpels from an ag store and keep in your boat bag. Keep a small bottle of iodine in there too. You just have to make a small little cut about an 1/16th of an inch on the back side of the hook and then pull. It will pop right out. I have had the unfortunate pleasure of having a couple of megabass hooks in my hands and a leg. Just stick your hand your hand in ice till its numb and pour alcohol on your knife and area you are going to cut. Its pretty much the same thing the doc does and it wont cost you your hook or $300. Like the old saying goes, no pain no gain:D
Cajunangler Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Too bad about the hook in the finger thing but having a pair of sidecutters on board would probably helped a great deal. Techo, sounds like your day didn't go ery well either. I can't reccomend any dealer or shop for your issue but I can offer my personal assistance. Wiring a trailer is not hard and I've done several over the years. Looks like we both live in the Nixa area, send me a PM if you need help getting things back in order. I will be out of pocket the next couple of days fishing but I'm sure we could get you fixed up before the next time we get warmer weather.
Sam Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 I've had numerous hooks stuck in me over the years, some bad, some worse. Worst of all was when I was by myself trolling a Bandit II plug on Bull Shoals and caught a 25" walleye. I hate using a landing net when treble hooks are involved, but that was a nice fish and I netted it. You can't lip a walleye - anyway, you won't do it twice. I got the fish in the boat and it was hooked on the back treble and the front treble was tangled in the net. In trying to get the mess straightened out, the walleye flopped and sunk one of the front treble hooks deep in the base of my right thumb. Now the thrashing fish, the net, and me were all attached. This went on for awhile. It's a good thing that wasn't a big bass I wanted to release, because I ended up stepping on the walleye's head to hold it still while I worked left-handed with needle nose pliers to get first the fish and then the net unhooked. Then I had to run the hook on through my thumb and cut the barb off.
rps Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Denny: Sadly, I have reported on this board, more than once, about hooking myself. I feel your pain. Techo: I feel yours as well. These reports make me hesitant to go out Saturday.
Quillback Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 These reports make me hesitant too, not because of the slow fishing, but the hooks in fingers stuff. I have fished all my life, and I have done a lot of fishing and so far have not buried a hook in myself, it's just dumb luck, and when I see stories like this I keep thinking my time will come.

Hmmm, been a long time since I had one in my finger too. Hmm Sorry you had to take one for the team Denjac, but it has given me a heads up. Ever try stuffing those boogers up in your tube ? http://www.tacklespecialty.com/
Billfo Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 I like your method.. I will have to get that stuff for my first aid box. Most guys have a hook-in story. I got mine.. Treble hook UNDER the thumbnail.. Yanked it out with the pliers.. It was a bad decision. Being a farm kid this is my little trick.
