oneshot Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Out in Wyoming I met a guide who was considering moving his elk camp or going out of business entirely. It was just getting too hard to convince folks to spend 4 or 5 days in the backcountry without cell service I've killed far too many phones on the river and in the woods to trust myself bringing them along any more. Most of the places I fish in Missouri are close enough to help that spending a long time without seeing someone isn't likely, and most of the places I fish elsewhere are so remote a cellphone is of no use. Then again, I'm also young and invincible Whats crazy if I don't have service I'm listening to IPod or playing Hunting Games. oneshot

There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
ozark trout fisher Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 The answer for me, is I would never dream of taking my cell phone anywhere near a trout stream, but if I did it would certainly be off. I understand that it would be good to have a cell phone if I got in an emergency situation, but I figure that folks have been out fishing, hunting, camping, and hiking for going on a millenium or so without cell phones or other technology, so I can probably manage too. My father spent most of his life in the interior of Alaska, hunting and fishing in the type of wilderness that makes anything we have around here or anywhere else in the lower 48 seem like a city park-all without a cell phone,GPS, or any other kind of technology, and he managed to always make it out okay. I don't believe having a cell phone on when you are on the stream is a "breach of etiquette. I just think it is a sign that you are affected by the the inability to concentrate on one thing at a time that is so prevalent in this day and age. I say this as a relatively young person who sees the lives of those around me pretty much controlled by phones and other such things. I just don't have any interest in being like that. I only have a cell phone at all because it's absolutely unavoidable. I was a holdout on getting one in the first place, and I still wish I didn't have to have one.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 If you are fishing tailwaters they are most definetly a very useful tool. Not so much at Blue Springs creek. SIO3

fly2fish Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I carry my company supplied cell phone when wading, especially at night instead of my personal cell phone, that way in case I dunk it I don't have to pay to fix or replace it.

How lucky you must me to be able to earn a living without being at the disposal of the customer, 24/7.... Then there's the rest of us... And I'm darned good at doing two things at once, TYVM.. jdmidwest Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I didn't realize you could only bring along one or the other.. Pistol for protection (though shooting snakes is more target practice than protection) and a cell for communication.. I guess nobody noticed the part about most places I go do not have cell phone reception, so it would be dead weight. With the pistol, at least I can put myself out of my misery if I get hurt too bad. I own a Blackberry, I use it when I am in a boat fishing on a lake for some noise. When I am in the stream wading or floating in the yak, I don't need any other distractions or connections to the outside world I just left for a few hours or days. gotmuddy Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I will get my phone out on the river to save waypoints of where some big fish are. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
flytyer57 Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I will get my phone out on the river to save waypoints of where some big fish are. When I get my yak set up, I plan on putting my handheld GPS on it. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
