dtrs5kprs Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 Just when you think you are too hillbilly, you run across something like these: http://cgi.ebay.com/6-FLOAT-FLY-REAL-OPOSSUM-FUR-JIGS-1-32-MATZUO-HOOKS-/190497645217?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c5a8b62a1 Good looking f&f jig though.

I buy most of my jigs from this guy. Quality Product good price and fast free shipping. He also will make them in about any color you want. I've bought from him for over 2 years and still am buying from him. Float n fly is a popular method in the highland revoirs in the southeast states and I really believe it it would work on Table Rock. Long rod fixed float small hair jig 10 to 12 ft below bobber= big Dale Hollow smallmouth.
Dutch Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 Wow those are about as pricey as the Dale Hollow ones. I'm sure glad I learned how to tie my own.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted February 27, 2011 Root Admin Posted February 27, 2011 What's the difference between a "float and fly" jig and a plain marabou jig? Fur? What size are these jigs?
skeeter Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 What's the difference between a "float and fly" jig and a plain marabou jig? Fur? What size are these jigs? The "original" (make that old) float n' fly jigs were tied with "craft hair" by the originators down in the Dale Hollow area. "Craft hair" is the material used for hair on the heads of those ugly little rubber "troll dolls" that used to be hot sellers. The diff between craft hair and marabou is the craft hair is far more stiff when wet than marabou. Whereas marabou "undulates" with little movement of the rod tip, craft hair remains almost motionless by comparison. Apparently, different materials are being substituted, with success, for the craft hair. Used to be that F n' F jigs were seldom bigger than 1/8 oz and were tied using a dart head or pointy nosed jig head with eyes painted on it. Without the eyes the jig was a dud.

His silver buddies are pretty close to the original. Weird how brown fish make you like little chunks of ugly metal, blacks make you need $30 ultra realistic swimbaits and such. The possum hair just struck me as sort of humorous this afternoon. Nice natural bait color.

Phil you should see the craft hair jig in the water. With very little effort it will really do a dance whereas the maribou has to be worked a lot more. I only use 1/16 FnF because heavier pulls my float under and really messes things up. I also like to have less craft hair on my jigs than the ones you typically buy.
RSBreth Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Wow - that's overpriced. I need to start selling my jigs, but I'd feel guilty gouging people with prices like that.
dtrs5kprs Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 Other F&F links that might be useful: http://floatandfly.com/ Good info on the specifics of floats from Triton Mike A link to some rod options. They make a good crappie stick. http://www.bnmpoles.com/c-12-float-fly-rods.aspx A good all around page for info on brown fish. http://thesmallmouthguru.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=15&Itemid=26 These last few make me wonder about other applications...spawn flats, post spawn on gravel places. Not as a go-to, but as an option for a tough day. http://www.fishin.com/articles/jimdicken/springfloatandfly.htm Some of the ones I have had bookmarked for a while.
