Gavin Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 If its just most & biggest....I'd say a fish is a fish...no need to measure unless you want to submit for big fish. IMO....a legit 17-18" is a good one...24-26" is toward the upper end of the food chain...its a rare fish that gets bigger than that.Cheers.
joeD Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 What if we all got together and fished, without competition and rules? Seems easier and more friendly. Charity event? No problem. Pass the hat and we'll give. Mix things up? Sure, have a drawing for a partner (or partners) and a couple of river sections, and have fun. Spin or fly, who cares? Take pictures and show around the campsite. Want to float? Go ahead. Because, at some point, friendly competition or not, the rules (if ever agreed upon) become more important than the event. Yes, I get it. We all like competition and performing under pressure with our peers. The chance to "beat" someone (everyone) is a very powerful urge. I have that urge. When I have a chance to dunk on my 14 year old daughter on our home court, I do it (then I drain a three on the next play to show my versatility). Yes, a fishing tourney sounds fun. Why not? Everything else in life seems to be ripe for a competition. Maybe it'll add a little spice to our fishing. But let's not. Let's not succumb to the constant pressure of life being a grim and pointless winner take all race to the finish. Most of us hustle and bustle all week, busy to the Nth degree, generally following direction and rules not of our own choosing. And when it comes time to relax, fishing for example, why do we want to go right back into a grind? Fishing to prove ones worth and status among mostly strangers? Yes, I know. Settle down Joe. Geeez. What a Donnie downer. Anyway. I'd rather get together with people to fish without rules and a schedule, that's all.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted May 18, 2011 Root Admin Posted May 18, 2011 I'd consider giving 100% to charity and give winners prizes from sponsors. You'd be surprised how this would not scare people from fishing them. Most would just do it for the fun of it- excuse to get out and fish. Takes some of the motivation out of cheating too. There's a thread a few years old we talked about fly fishing tournaments on Taneycomo... had one and it was fun but here on Taney we're too much subject to generation to schedule one unless it's out of a boat.
ColdWaterFshr Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 I'm with Brian Sloss -- not a fan of fishing competitions, but if you absolutely have to do it, consider Phil's suggestion about making it all for charity.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 30 swinging sticks on the Current???!!!! Are you kidding?? I drive by Tan Vat when there is one car in the parking lot.. SIO3
Idylwilde Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 OK This is why I ask on this forum about Ideas for this event. So! The date of the event will be the August 27th. (Most canoe Traffic is off the river then.) 2. No prize Money will be awarded to anglers. A trophy will be given for the most fish caught, and drawings for sponsor prizes.( 100% to the American Lung Association.) 3. $25.00 entry Fee per angler. 4. Two man teams on the honer system with score cards which will be furnished by event. 5. Start Time: 7:00 am End Time: 5:00 Pm 6.Anglers will be divided into two man teams randomly. 7.No spin-cast equipment shall be used. 8.All anglers will have a valid Missouri fishing license. 9.All fish attracting flies will be made under the State Of Missouri definition of a Fly. ANY DEPATURE FROM THE RULES OR FISHING ECTHICS WILL BE GROUNDS FOR DISQUALIFICATION All enteries should be made at least a week before the event date. By 8-20-11. OK folks this is what I have now except for the beat or zone's. If this is successful and something you want annually we will look into tweaking it next year. You can send inquires to my e-mail and I will send further information to you. By the way Chota has already donated some nice gear for prizes. I will have a PDF flyer put out by next week for people to print and share with whom ever they want. I appreciate any help I can get from the fly fishing community for this event. This is not an easy thing to do with out the support of you fly anglers. Most of all is to have a great day fishing and fellowship. Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.
Trout Commander Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 In regards to rule #14, is that kind of a penalty deduced for each beer thing or more of a you're DQ'd thing? I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
ColdWaterFshr Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Can former pro anglers enter? And since this going to be August 27th (hotter n bejesus), is it okay if I wear just a loin cloth? Paul Dallas BTW - who is Chota? Is he the offspring of Chewbacca and Yoda?
snagged in outlet 3 Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Wouldn't that loin cloth thing be decided by your "randomly drawn partner"? It says no alcohol to be consumed during the tourney P Diddy. Are you sure you want to do that? Loin cloth or not. Jus sayin. Pete
ColdWaterFshr Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Well, seein as how this is all on the "honer" system, yeah, I could prolly lay off the sauce. But about the loin cloth, say I were to randomly draw some chick like Jessica Biel . . . whats to keep her pryin eyes from wantin to see whats behind my curtain? (i.e. - my wedding tackle) I can just see it now, Salem News-Crescent Headline: "American Lung Association Denies involvement with Soft-Porno Fly-fishing Tournament"
