Justin there is some truth to what you're saying. At some point the big stores had what the little ones didn't and they built themselves up. However, once they sucked you in and killed off the competition now they can dictate to you what's available instead of the other way around. It is, unfortunately, all about the bottom line. It's not really capitalism when they are realistically the only competitive game in town. Remember, a lot of the little guys never had aspirations to become a giant. They just wanted to make a good living at the thing they enjoyed. I'm all for capitalism, but only if it's tempered with social responsibility, and these corporations have shut their eyes to that.

I am the 99%!!!! :yaeh-am-not-durnk:

It's simply supply and demand, capitalism not corporate greed (No one makes us go to Wal-Mart). Somehow Grandpa Pidgeons and Central Hardware didn't have what people wanted so they started going elsewhere. Unfortunately the buying power of these big stores is much better than the smaller ones so price is better and price is what keeps people out of the local shops and in to the bigger ones, or to the online stores that don't have the overhead of a brick and mortar store. We all bitch about the big box stores (but we all go there from time to time) and I bet many of us buy things online, it is up to us to support the smaller local businesses and spend an extra 50 cents on a fly or lure or we will continue to see fewer and fewer shops that actually care about the customer.

Born and raised at Grandpa Pidgeons, I can still smell anise coming from the jelly worms. More stuff doesn’t equal a better outdoor experience. I’m basically fed up with the whole retail marketing circus that has overtaken what was once a pleasant experience. I’m cool with supporting local small stores and will seek them out when I can.

BPS has never been a first choice for me, but after my last few experiences with BPS gear that falls apart before it's even been wet, I've sworn them off. There's a difference between price and value, and the folks at BPS either don't get that or are banking on folks returning every couple months to replace their broken gear.

try the 100mph rain suits, best I have seen.

everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.

Good luck! Us "little guys" can't compete! Not with price or selection, and customer service only means something to about 1% of the population anymore..

And yes, I'm pointing out that its a trend that is multi-faceted and nationwide. (as I put on my proverbial Wal-mart hat)

Maybe we need the government to intervene and restrict these "non captilistic?" businesses. I dislike what the big stores have done to small communities as much as anyone, but the truth is they employ lots of people and provide goods and services that people evidently want and need (or they wouldn't succeed). They probably didn't start out to be huge either, but they continued to expand as they figured out they were the best thing going, I don't think anyone can blame them for that. If the 99% would seek out the small stores, and quit buying things on the internet the country would slowly go back toward the days of old (which evidently was better than today).

My guess is that the bigger stores like Wal-Mart are able to give it's employees better benefits and more security than the smaller stores could, so from a jobs standpoint they may be a good thing.

I don't go to Walmarks. Can't stand the place.

But this is the question I've been asking lately.

At what point should I forget my loyalties to local businesses and just shop price to save ME some money?

That's the choice everyone has to make, and unfortunately most have chosen to save money. Can't fault people for it, but once you make the change I think you forfeit your right to complain about them.

ALWAYS! lol (don'tcha get it, it's the American Way!)

Denjac, comparing one product at two difference stores does not a statistical pricing analysis make... lol but a valiant attempt. ;)
