dblades Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 E15 gasoline Blowing up Engines - Who'da Thunk It Put a little grease on 'er she'll be fine As we posted a month (What to do about Ethanol) or so ago the EPA is bound and determined to push more corn based ethanol into gasoline across the US. Most regular grade fuel now contains 10% of the evil corn juice with plans to take it to 15% to save the rain forest, improve polar bear habitat, clean up oil spills and insure they get votes for the right candidate in the Iowa Caucus. That's corn country ya know! Proponents of E-15 say it's fine for marine engines and are pushing hard to make it the new standard for regular unleaded. The truth is, it's a violation of federal law to use E-15 in marine engines. With all that is coming down the pike the good folks up in the north country of Fon du Lac, WI (Mercury) completed some tests on E-15 for the feds and the results are stunning. Two out of the three outboards Merc tested with E-15 in their standard 300 hour full throttle endurance test failed to complete the test. Both motors showed sever internal damage when the test were shut down. The 300 HP Verado in the test had three damaged exhaust valves caused by high operating temperatures and a 200 HP EFI experienced bearing failure around the 250 hour mark. Identical engines ran with standard non ethanol fuel showed no damage during the 300 hour run. Yamaha has come out of E-15 as well agreeing with Mercury that E-15 should not be used in Yamaha motors. "Accidental use of E-15 will not void a Yamaha warranty but it should not be used for marine engine on purpose." E-15 will be at pump near you soon and if advocates have their way it will become the new standard for regular unleaded. Boaters need to be vigilant when filling up, E-10 is safe for most late model outboards but non ethanol fuel is still the best for your motor especially if the fuel may sit in the tank for a while absorbing moisture. Pay a little more at the pump for non ethanol fuel, use a water separating filter and fuel additives and by all means avoid E-15 The majority of Premium gas(91+) is ethonal free, it's the 87 octane thats hard to find.
Martin Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Yes, several stations down around Tablerock Lake have non-E premium....I've never seen non-E regular anywhere in the last year or 3. Hey-Bob's in Lampe has the Non-E premium, and I've been using it in everything. 75 hp Mercury, a 150 hp yammy, a 9.9 yammy, all my "stuff". (chainsaws, mowers, etc)... Everything seems to run excellent.

gitnby Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Joe Bald Market has non Ethanol Premium. Not sure what they sell at What's up Dock?
tho1mas Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 The sinclair in Nixa had non - E Premium Bob's on N. Main, Nixa has non - premium also.
Chris King Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 On the water, Long Creek has 87 non-e, Bent Hook (Big Cedar) has 89 non-e and everybody else has non-e premium. I hate to pay the extra on the water, but I'll do it for non-e. My motor wants 87 but I've been running 89 to help the idle.
